Book Synopsis Body, Movement, and Culture by : Sally Ann Ness
Download or read book Body, Movement, and Culture written by Sally Ann Ness and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Body, Movement, and Culture, Sally Ann Ness provides an original interpretive account of three forms of sinulog dancing practiced in Cebu City in the Philippines: a healing ritual, a dance drama, and a "cultural" exhibition dance. Ness's examination of these dance forms yields rich insights into the cultural predicament of this Philippine city and the way in which kinesthetic and visual symbols interact to create meaning. Ness scrutinizes the patterns of movement, the use of the body and of objects, and the shaping of space common to all three versions of the sinulog. She then relates these elements to the fundamental ways the culture bearers of Cebu City experience their world. For example, she shows how each of the dance forms functions to reinforce class distinctions and to establish a code of authenticated "cultural" action. At the same time, Ness demonstrates, the dances manifest and actualize widely applied notions about the nature of "devotion," "sincerity," "naturalness," and "beauty." Throughout the text, Ness provides a close analysis of movement that is all too often missing from anthropological studies of dance. Most significantly, she works to relate the movements used in dance to everyday movement and to interpret the attitudes and values that are embodied in both choreographed and quotidian movement. Important and illuminating, Body, Movement, and Culture is of particular interest to students and scholars of anthropology, folklore, dance, and Asian studies.

Book Synopsis Information Technology in Educational Management for the Schools of the Future by : A. Fung
Download or read book Information Technology in Educational Management for the Schools of the Future written by A. Fung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-01-31 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for both specialist and generalist. For Information Technology (IT) and Educational Management (EM) researchers, it brings together the latest information and analysis of ITEM projects in eleven countries. But the issues raised by this collection of papers are so important for schools, school systems and the future of education that it is essential reading not only for researchers but also for teachers, administrators and all concerned with the planning and governance of our education systems. New technologies may improve our lives in two ways: by enabling us to do things better (accomplishing what we do already more efficiently) and by enabling us to do better things (accomplishing new things that we were not able to do before). Sometimes "doing things better" merges into "doing better things". Thus in the 19th century the coming of the railway enabled our forbears to accomplish their existing journies in less time and in greater comfort. But it also opened up the prospect of new journies to more distant places, and led ultimately to far-reaching changes in lifestyles in new, commuter settlements far from the old city centres. So it is in the present day with Information Technology in Educational Management. Some of the papers in this volume focus on specialist tasks, for example how to develop a computer-based decision-support system to help those drawing up school timetables. Others address situations in which the power of the technology offers us the potential to change radically what we do.
Book Synopsis Understanding the Filipino Worker and Organization by : Ateneo de Manila University Press
Download or read book Understanding the Filipino Worker and Organization written by Ateneo de Manila University Press and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday, two-thirds of Filipinos spend eight to twelve hours earning a living and will do so for most of our lives. Work and organizations are therefore vital factors that shape our well-being and quality of life. On the other hand, the success of an organization is also dependent on how well it can harness its human resources. To know and understand organizational theory then is vital, but, although a plethora of Western theories on workers and organizations exist, they have not always been applicable in the Philippine context.
