Book Synopsis Tapping State Government Information Sources by : Lori L. Smith
Download or read book Tapping State Government Information Sources written by Lori L. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each state government produces large varieties and quantities of useful information that are largely unknown outside their state of origin. This book leads the public to the most useful information sources produced by each state, as well as to depository libraries that will facilitate more effective research. For each of the 50 states, important publications are detailed, along with information on how to obtain them. The publications' topics range from crime statistics to vital statistics, business statistics, health information, statistical abstracts, education directories, state budgets, economic indicators, state laws and legal information, and more. Tapping State Government Information Sources has a broader focus than previously published books in this subject area, most of which have focused solely on depository laws, useful state publications, or indexes to state publications. This book covers all three. The first chapter describes print and electronic sources that provide information about all 50 states. Each state's resources are then described in individual chapters. When possible, information about how to order a copy of the source is given, as are Web addresses for titles that are available online. At the beginning of each state chapter, the state's legal definition of public document or its equivalent is given, which may be of interest to librarians in states that are reexamining their own depository laws.
Book Synopsis Reorganizing State Government by : James L Garnett
Download or read book Reorganizing State Government written by James L Garnett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although state executive branch reorganization has been surrounded by controversy and expense for more than sixty years and has been occurring at an unprecedented rate during the last thirteen, much of our knowledge of it has been anecdotal, fragmentary, conceptually imprecise, and untested, asserts Dr. Garnett. His book contributes conceptual and empirical order to the study of reorganization by analyzing competing and complementary models, evaluating research methodologies, stating hypotheses, and testing those hypotheses with data drawn from more than 150 of the state reorganizations that have taken place in this century. Dr. Garnett addresses three basic questions: Why do state reorganizations occur? How are they conducted? What forms do the reorganized executive branches take? His specific action guidelines for governors and other state officials, agenda for further research, and extensive bibliography will be particularly useful.
Book Synopsis California Politics by : Renee B. Van Vechten
Download or read book California Politics written by Renee B. Van Vechten and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A thorough yet concise overview of California institutions, politics, and initiative process, grounded in an overview of California’s political culture." —Ronnee Schreiber, San Diego State University The thoroughly revised Fifth Edition of California Politics: A Primer concisely explains how California’s history, political culture, rules, and institutions come together to shape politics today and how they will determine the state of affairs tomorrow. Author Renee B. Van Vechten begins with a brief political history of California, then walks through direct democracy, the legislature, executive branch, and court system. She covers local government and concludes with a discussion of the state’s budget process, campaigns and elections, political engagement, and policy issues. From the structure of the state′s government to its local representatives, policies, and voter participation, California Politics: A Primer delivers the concepts and details students need. New to the Fifth Edition An emphasis on California’s place in the federal system provides students with context around the state leadership′s resistance to Trump administration policies on things like California’s sanctuary state status, immigration, the environment, and more. Increased coverage of policy topics throughout the book helps students see how recent policy has impacted issues such as greenhouse gas emissions regulations, attempted "fixes" for water- and drought-related issues, new transportation projects, and prison reform. Extended discussions of elections-related innovations introduce students to recent elections-related topics such as the Top-Two Primary, efforts to increase voter registration, all vote-by-mail elections, and redistricting. New coverage of the "Five Californias" gives students a better understanding of California’s political geography and how distinct segments of the population are primed for political engagement or disaffection. New lists of key terms with clear definitions at the end of each chapter enable students to review the content more effectively. New and updated maps and graphics depict important topics such as California’s newly proposed high-speed rail project. Book excerpt: Calif¿s. budget crisis has made plain that scarce revenues will put a premium on managing public resources better than ever if state gov¿t. is to meet its obligations and realize its vision for serving its people. The best mgmt. practices rely on sound info. tech. (IT) systems that can deliver up-to-date data about operations to decision-makers, who can act upon them to improve programs and services. In the last 8 years, Calif. has made great strides in delivering critical IT tools to its managers. Yet Calif. is still far behind other states that are using data to drive performance, due to fear of another big system failure. This report argues that it is time to push past those fears so that Calif. leaders can change the culture of gov¿t. by building the state¿s IT capacity. Illus.
