This book presents a comprehensive investigation of the production and application of a variety of polymer based transistor devices and circuits. It begins with a detailed overview of Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFTs) and discusses the various possible fabrication methods reported so far. This is followed by two major sections on the choice, optimization and implementation of the gate dielectric material to be used. Details of the effects of processing on the efficiency of the contacts are then provided. The book concludes with a chapter on the integration of such devices to produce a variety of OTFT based circuits and systems. The key objective is to examine strategies to exploit existing materials and techniques to advance OTFT technology in device performance, device manufacture, and device integration. Finally, the collective knowledge from these investigations facilitates the integration of OTFTs into organic circuits, which is expected to contribute to the development of new generation of all-organic displays for communication devices and other pertinent applications. Overall, a major outcome of this work is that it provides an economical means for organic transistor and circuit integration, by enabling the use of a well-established PECVD infrastructure, while not compromising the performance of electronics. It was found that the device performance was stable under different bending status of the device. Then a novel label-free DNA sensor was developed, in which single-stranded DNA probes were immobilized on the surface of Au gate electrode. These devices successfully detected complementary DNA targets at concentrations as low as 1 nM. The detection limit was also extended to 10 pM by pulse-enhanced hybridization process of DNA. The sensing mechanism of this type of DNA sensor was discussed. Besides label-free DNA sensors, OECTs based on PEDOT:PSS were also exploited as cell-based biosensors for the first time. The devices showed stable performance and excellent biocompatibility in culture medium. Human esophageal squamous epithelial cancer cell lines (KYSE30) and fibroblast cell lines (HFF1) were successfully grown on the surface of PEDOT:PSS film in the devices. Then the devices were used for in-vitro monitoring cell activities when the living cells were treated by trypsin and an anti-cancer drug, retinoic acid. It was found that the devices were sensitive to the change of surface charge and morphology of adherent cells. The sensing mechanism of this type of cell-based biosensors was discussed. Finally, OECT arrays in micro dimensions were successfully fabricated using photolithography. The fabrication process was mainly divided into three steps, i.e. fabrication of gold electrodes, fabrication of PEDOT:PSS films, and fabrication of PEG mirowells. Moreover, three different fabrication methods were discussed. Compared with macro dimensional OECTs, micro dimensional OECTs showed better electrical performance. The micro devices were more stable in aqueous solution and showed faster response time. Micro dimensional OECT arrays are expected to have applications in point-of-care and real-time analysis in diagnosis.

These activities are of great importance to our well-being since they allow the cells to respond to their environment and communicate with each other to function as tissues and organs. In this thesis the use of organic electronic devices to interface with cell membranes has been explored. Organic electronics are especially suited for the task given their ability to transduce ionic to electronic signals. Four scientific papers are included in the thesis, where organic electronic devices are used together with living cells and supported lipid bilayers (SLB). In the first paper a ferroelectric cell release surface is presented. Release of cells cultured on the surface was induced by a polarization change in the ferroelectric polymer. This non-enzymatic release method was developed primarily for treatment of severe burns.The remaining three papers strive to combine lipid bilayers and the conjugated polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) in biosensors. The target device is an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) functionalized with a supported lipid bilayer. Several aspects of the integration are explored, including promotion of vesicle fusion onto PEDOT:PSS and optimization of OECT design and biasing conditions for sensing. For SLB formation on PEDOT:PSS two different silica material systems, one PEDOT:PSS/silica composite and one mesoporous silica film, were evaluated with respect to electrical properties and quality of the resulting bilayer. The electrical properties were found to be similar, but the quality of the bilayer was better on the mesoporous silica film. In the last two papers the focus is on optimization of OECTs for sensing purposes. Biasing conditions for operation at high transconductance were identified, as well as design principles for large sensor output in impedance sensing.

Book excerpt: Using flexible neuromorphic electronics that emulate biological neuronal systems is an innovative approach for facilitating the implementation of next-generation artificial intelligence devices, including wearable computers, soft robotics devices, and neuroprosthetics. Stretchable synaptic transistors based on field-effect transistors (FETs), which have functions and structures resembling those of biological synapses, are promising technological devices in flexible neuromorphic electronics owing to their high flexibility, excellent biocompatibility, and easy processability. However, obtaining stretchable synaptic FETs with various synaptic characteristics and good stretching stabilities is challenging. Significant efforts to produce stretchable synaptic FETs have been undertaken, and remarkable advances in materials, fabrication processes, and applications have been achieved. From this perspective, we discuss the requirements for neuromorphic devices in flexible neuromorphic electronics and the advantages of stretchable synaptic FETs. Moreover, representative methods used to implement stretchable synaptic transistors, including the structural design and development of intrinsically stretchable devices, are introduced. Additionally, the application of stretchable synaptic transistors in artificial sensory systems such as light, tactile, and multisensory artificial nervous systems is also discussed. Finally, we highlight the possible challenges in implementing and using stretchable synaptic transistors, propose solutions to overcome the current limitations of these devices, and suggest future research directions.
