GC-MS was mandated for the analysis of 114 compounds, yet the spectra of many of them, if they had been recorded at all, were scattered throughout the literature. Moreover, it soon became apparent that, even if a sufficient number of instruments could be made available to undertake the task of monitoring 114 substances in the effluents of 21 categories of industry, the personnel could not be trained to perform the analyses and interpret the results. The solution to this problem has been the development of highly automated mass spectrometers which can be operated by personnel without the traditional research training. This book is for the new breed of mass spectroscopist who is not interested in the esoteric details of mass spectral fragmentation, but who merely wishes to identify specific pollutants in effluents. Book excerpt: A method utilizing computerized gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is presented for qualitative and quantitative determination of volatile organics in drinking waters, natural waters, or industrial effluent waters. It is based on the addition of deuterated internal standard, 1,2-dichlorethane-d4, to an appropriate-sized portion of sample and use of the Bellar-Lichtenberg method of purge-trap-desorb into determinative instrument. Method validation consisted of analyzing volatile priority pollutants at 2, 10, 50, 100, and 200 ppb with internal standard at 20 ppb in each of seven replicate analysis at each dose. Comparison of relative standard deviations (RSD) of internal and external standard methods of GC-MS analysis revealed no significant differences. This study also yielded valuable information concerning repeatability, reproducibility, stability of internal standard, linear dynamic range of GC-MS, and RSD variation with different area regenerations of diagnostic atomic mass units. Pollutant identification is based on retention time and total mass spectral comparison with authentic compound. Quantitation is based on measurement of the areas of retrieved diagnostic atomic mass unit regeneration of contaminant and internal standard. Using response factors determined from analysis of standard mixtures containing compounds of interest and internal standard, and the known mass of internal standard, the concentration is calculated. Lower detection limit for the volatile priority pollutants is approximately 1 ?g/litre. This method has detected several volatiles that are not Environmental Protection Agency priority pollutants.

Guidance is given to the analyst in the specification of operating parameters for the optimization of this transfer. The instrument was evaluated with both packed and capillary columns by using: (1) the volatile organics among Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) priority pollutants and (2) ground water samples from Rocky Mountain Arsenal. The Hewlett-Packard model 7675A purge-and-trap sampler proved to be adequate for identifying removable organic compounds in water at concentrations of 4 ng/ml (4 ppb) provided that packed-column chromatography is sufficient to resolve the components. This instrument is not suitable for capillary column applications.

Environmental Pollution is a very popular topic now, and one notices that there are a number of scientific conferences devoted to the topic. Furthermore, part of every conference is devoted to measurements of pollutants. So the question becomes one of what should be different about our conference. To start with there are two unique features here: The first is the limited attendance which should provide more meaningful discussion; the second is the availability to the world of all the information in book form after the conference. We gave considerable thought to the contents of the conference which would take advantage of the unique features. Therefore, we decided to look to the future and present material here that is not in routine use. The search for pollutants has just begun, and their presence cannot be established without some means of detection. Many substances are not known to be toxic be cause no one has studied them. The necessary information can only be obtained if techniques for detection and measurement are avail able.
