Book excerpt: This is the first book to address the hot topic of functional silica gels and their applications. Originally used mainly in chromatography, specialized silica gels have evolved into crucially important functional nanomaterials suitable for use in, amongst other things, chemical synthesis, analysis, purification, surface protection and drug release. It is estimated that the world's current 1 billion dollar market for sol-gels (mostly silica-based) will grow by more than 5% per year from 2006 to 2011. Actually, as many revolutionary products are now reaching the market, it will increase much faster. Commercial applications include glasses, paints, catalysts and fragrances. Medical uses include the delivery of vitamins, hormones and acne treatments and the synthesis of the powerful anticancer drug, taxol. Sol-gel technology also forms the basis of the MetaChip, thanks to which potential new drugs can be identified rapidly and simultaneously. With content relevant to both scientific and commercial viewpoints, the book will interest researchers and undergraduates as well as managers and consultants in the chemical industry. Those from an industrial background will gain a clear picture of what this technology is all about and how it can be used to solve their specific problems. All readers will benefit from the clear, concise style and consistent treatment of topics. The book demonstrates how chemists synthesize, from the bottom-up, tailor-made (nano)materials of immense practical importance spanning the fields of chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, biology and medicine. It also shows how the versatility of silica gels results from their physical and chemical properties. An updated outlook on new commercial products, and the companies which make them, greatly adds relevance and practical value to the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental properties, preparation routes and applications of a novel class of organic–inorganic nanocomposites known as periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs). Mesoporous silicas are amorphous inorganic materials which have silicon and oxygen atoms in their framework with pore size ranging from 2 to 50 nm. They can be synthesized from surfactants as templates for the polycondensation of various silicon sources such as tetraalkoxysilane. In general, mesoporous silica materials possess high surface areas, tunable pore diameters, high pore volumes and well uniformly organized porosity. The stable chemical property and the variable ability for chemical modification makes them ideal for many applications such as drug carrier, sensor, separation, catalyst, and adsorbent. Among such mesoporous silicas, in 1999, three groups in Canada, Germany, and Japan independently developed a novel class of organic–inorganic nanocomposites known as periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs). The organic functional groups in the frameworks of these solids allow tuning of their surface properties and modification of the bulk properties of the material. The book discusses the properties of PMOs, their preparation, different functionalities and morphology, before going on to applications in fields such as catalysis, drug delivery, sensing, optics, electronic devices, environmental applications (gas sensing and gas adsorption), biomolecule adsorption and chromatography. The book provides fundamental understanding of PMOs and their advanced applications for general materials chemists and is an excellent guide to these promising novel materials for graduate students majoring in chemical engineering, chemistry, polymer science and materials science and engineering.

Book excerpt: The combination of supramolecular chemistry, inorganic solids, and nanotechnology has already led to significant advances in many areas such as sensing, controlled motion, and delivery. By making possible an unprecedented tunability of the properties of nanomaterials, these techniques open up whole new areas of application for future supramolecular concepts. The Supramolecular Chemistry of Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Materials gathers current knowledge on the subject and provides an overview of the present state and upcoming challenges in this rapidly growing, highly cross- or interdisciplinary research field. The book details how these designed materials can improve existing materials or generate novel functional features such as chemical amplification, cooperative binding and signal enhancement that are difficult or not at all achievable by classical organic supramolecular chemistry. It also discusses issues related to nanofabrication or nanotechnology such as the directed and controlled assembly or disassembly, biomimetic functions and strategies, and the gating and switching of surface functions or morphology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the adjustable structure, sizes, morphologies, and variable organic compounds, organic-inorganic hybrid silica have been widely used in both scientific researches and industry applications, such as optical films, adsorbents, catalyst supports, and bio-medical fields. This thesis is based on the synthesis of polyacrylic acid colloids, which is used as a template for organic-inorganic hybrid silica particles and further applications of hybrid silica particles as optical films, especially as functional antireflective coatings. Two main parts are included in this thesis listed below. 1. Self-assembly of polyacrylic acid: morphologies and applications. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) colloids with different morphologies, from compact nanospheres to "core-shell" structure, were prepared by simply adding HCI solution. The change of morphologies and sizes had been detected by TEM and DLS test. The influence from molecular weight and different organic solvents on the morphologies of PAA colloids were studied. PAA/SiO2 hybrid particles were prepared. Mesoporous SiO2 particles could be obtained after removing the PAA templates. 2. Fabrications and characterization of durability silica anti-reflection coating. The as prepare silica particles were used for fabricating enhanced durability anti-reflection (AR) films. The adhesion between nanoparticles in AR film had been realized via a modified CVD method. The morphology and the roughness of AR coating were checked by AFM and the durability was detected by quartz crystal microbalance. The optical properties on glass substrate and PET substrate had been also characterized and the improvement on transmittance could be confirmed.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic-inorganic hybrid mesoporous silicas were synthesized via nonionic supramolecular assembly using the co-condensation synthesis technique with the intention of understanding the catalytic domain as well as developing strategies to control the catalytic functionalities at the molecular level. Esterification of free fatty acids in natural oils and fats was used to probe the catalytic activity of the synthesized acid-modified mesoporous catalysts. Application of solid acid catalysts in such reaction systems can possibly simplify the manufacturing process, reducing production costs, as well as eliminate environmental hazards posed by toxic wastes generated in homogeneous catalyzed reactions. The catalytic performance of the functionalized mesoporous silicas was significantly influenced by the median pore diameter of the catalyst, which was tuned using different surfactants. Incorporation of hydrophobic groups into the organic-inorganic acid catalyst enhanced the catalytic conversion of the fatty acids, although the catalytic performance of the resulting catalyst strongly depended on the incorporation technique as well as the size of the hydrophobic organic groups. Decreasing the spatial positioning of the sulfonic acid groups on the pore surface of mesostructured material increased the acid strength of the resulting acid catalyst. This study demonstrated that the catalytic properties of the functionalized mesoporous catalyst were complex and reaction kinetics studies alone could overlook other important factors, such as solution effects, site collaboration, and hydrophobicity of the catalytic domain, that could affect the ultimate performance of the acid solid catalyst. The work demonstrates the potential of intentionally designing the catalytic environment of the organic-inorganic hybrid mesoporous materials at the molecular level.
