Book Synopsis Aquatic and Wetland Plants of Oregon with Vegetative Key by : La Rea Dennis Johnston
Download or read book Aquatic and Wetland Plants of Oregon with Vegetative Key written by La Rea Dennis Johnston and published by Histria Academic. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic and wetland plants pose a particular problem for those wishing to identify them, because their flowering period is short and often unpredictable. The field botanist, the curious naturalist, the wetlands investigator, or the land manager is often faced with the difficulty of identifying a handful of wet greenery lacking all reproductive material. Aquatic and Wetland Plants of Oregon addresses this problem with comprehensive keys to vegetative characteristic of common-and not so common-plants found in Oregon aquatic and wetland habitats, most of which also occur in the surrounding region. Here is the guide to gaining familiarity with those often mysterious plants that never seem to flower, yet occur so frequently in wet habitats: ferns and their allies, grasses and grasslike plants, and broadleaf herbs, shrubs and trees. The many line drawings illustrate characteristics to seek when flowers are absent, show variations of leaf structure, and acquaint the user with vegetative structures of grasses. Up-to-date nomenclature, keys based on both vegetative characteristics and reproductive structures, and alphabetical listings of genera and species within families make this book useful to the professional and amateur wetland explorer alike.

Book Synopsis Constructed Wetlands and Sustainable Development by : Gary Austin
Download or read book Constructed Wetlands and Sustainable Development written by Gary Austin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how with careful planning and design, the functions and performance of constructed wetlands can provide a huge range of benefits to humans and the environment. It documents the current designs and specifications for free water surface wetlands, horizontal and vertical subsurface flow wetlands, hybrid wetlands and bio retention basins; and explores how to plan, engineer, design and monitor these natural systems. Sections address resource management (landscape planning), technical issues (environmental engineering and botany), recreation and physical design (landscape architecture), and biological systems (ecology). Site and municipal scale strategies for flood management, storm-water treatment and green infrastructure are illustrated with case studies from the USA, Europe and China, which show how these principles have been put into practice. Written for upper level students and practitioners, this highly illustrated book provides designers with the tools they need to ensure constructed wetlands are sustainably created and well manage

Download or read book Wetland and Stream Rapid Assessments written by John Dorney and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetland and Stream Rapid Assessments: Development, Validation, and Application describes the scientific and environmental policy background for rapid wetland and stream assessments, how such assessment methods are developed and statistically verified, and how they can be used in environmental decision-making—including wetland and stream permitting. In addition, it provides several case studies of method development and use in various parts of the world. Readers will find guidance on developing and testing such methods, along with examples of how these methods have been used in various programs across North America. Rapid wetland and stream functional assessments are becoming frequently used methods in federal, state and local environmental permitting programs in North America. Many governments are interested in developing new methods or improving existing methods for their own jurisdictions. This book provides an ideal guide to these initiatives. - Offers guidance for the use and evaluation of rapid assessments to developers and users of these methods, as well as students of wetland and stream quality - Contains contributions from sources who are successful in academia, industry and government, bringing credibility and relevance to the content - Includes a statistically-based approach to testing the validity of the rapid method, which is very important to the usefulness and defensibility of assessment methods

Book Synopsis The Soils of Oregon by : Thor Thorson
Download or read book The Soils of Oregon written by Thor Thorson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the only comprehensive summary of natural resources of Oregon and adds to World Soil Book Series state-level collection. Due to broad latitudinal and elevation differences, Oregon has an exceptionally diverse climate, which exerts a major influence on soil formation. The mean annual temperature in Oregon ranges from 0°C in the Wallowa and Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon to 13 °C in south-central Oregon. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 175 mm in southeastern Oregon to over 5,000 mm at higher elevations in the Coast Range. The dominant vegetation type in Oregon is temperate shrublands, followed by forests dominated by lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, and mixed conifers, grasslands, subalpine forests, maritime Sitka spruce-western hemlock forests, and ponderosa pine-dominated forests. Oregon is divided into 17 Major Land Resource Areas, the largest of which include the Malheur High Plateau, the Cascade Mountains, the Blue Mountain Foothills, and Blue Mountains. The single most important geologic event in Oregon was the deposition of Mazama ash 7,700 years by the explosion of Mt. Mazama. Oregon has soil series representative of 10 orders, 40 suborders, 114 great groups, 389 subgroups, over 1,000 families, and over 1,700 soil series. Mollisols are the dominant order in Oregon, followed by Aridisols, Inceptisols, Andisols, Ultisols, and Alfisols. Soils in Oregon are used primarily for forest products, livestock grazing, agricultural crops, and wildlife management. Key land use issues in Oregon are climate change; wetland loss; flooding; landslides; volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis; coastal erosion; and wildfires.
