Book excerpt: "Philippe de Commines (or de Commynes or "Philippe de Comines", Latin Philippus Cominaeus; 1447 ? 18 October 1511) was a writer and diplomat in the courts of Burgundy and France. He has been called "the first truly modern writer" (Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve) and "the first critical and philosophical historian since classical times" (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Neither a chronicler nor a historian in the usual sense of the word, his analyses of the contemporary political scene are what made him virtually unique in his own time."--Wikipedia.

Book Synopsis French Santee by : Susan Baldwin Bates
Download or read book French Santee written by Susan Baldwin Bates and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 17th century, driven by terrible persecution in France, thousands of Huguenots fled their country in search of religious freedom. A large number found what they sought in the fledgling colony of (South) Carolina in the New World Here these noblemen, craftsmen and artisans took up axes and guns and struggled to build their homes and survive in the wilderness with their wives and children. Nowhere was this more evident than on the banks of the Santee River where a group of French and Swiss Protestant refugees arrived in 1687 and where, "a sail from a boat was our first house and the earth our bed. A cabin like that of savages...was our second house" Through their letters and tantalizing bits and pieces of recorded history they left behind, their struggles and triumphs to forge a new settlement are revealed. At French Santee, they established a wealthy plantation society until time and fate returned the land they had conquered to wilderness once more. This is an in-depth study of the 17th century Huguenot settlement on the Santee River in South Carolina, with biographical sketches of the more than 100 French Protestant families who lived there. Detailed maps, photographs and copies of old plats show the changes in the area as the settlement grew and evolved into the 18th century. The book includes translations of two letters written from Carolina prior to 1700 explanatory notes and footnotes. You may begin by reading about your own family, but you will soon find yourself checking out their neighbors and friends tracing land sales and untangling relationships.

Book Synopsis Arms, Armies and Fortifications in the Hundred Years War by : Anne Curry
Download or read book Arms, Armies and Fortifications in the Hundred Years War written by Anne Curry and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Careful, original and wide-ranging study of many different aspects of late medieval military history.' HISTORY The Hundred Years War embraced warfare in all aspects, from the grand set pieces of Crecy and Agincourt to the pillaged lands of the dispossessed population. What makes this book different from previous studies emphasising the great battles is its use of less familiar evidence, such as administrative records and landscape archaeology, to gain a truer picture of the realities of medieval warfare. From a general review of battle tactics, the book turns to examine (at points enlisting computer analysis) a number of issues: the composition of the English army, the management of affairs in Aquitaine, the response in England at large to the war and the consequent propaganda and hardship, and the impact of warfare on local communities. Close study of surviving artefacts - weapons, fortifications - also allows realistic assessments of military and naval experiences.
