Book excerpt: “Personable characters and superb storytelling make this an excellent choice. . . . Essential for Pern fans of all ages.”—Library Journal (starred review) The son of a miner, Kindan has no expectations for any other life. He loves his lessons with the camp’s harper, but music isn’t part of a miner’s future. He also enjoys helping out with the camp’s watch-wher— a creature distantly related to dragons and uniquely suited to work in dark, cold spaces—but even that important job can’t promise a future above the ground. Then disaster strikes. In one terrible instant, Kindan loses his family and the camp loses its watch-wher. It will take a new friendship and a new responsibility to teach Kindan that even a seemingly impossible dream is never out of reach . . . and that light can be found in the deepest darkness. “A guaranteed pleaser [in] one of SF’s most splendid and longest-lived sagas.”—Booklist “Another delightful entry in the Pern series.”—Publishers Weekly

A secret order of knights searches for the Dragon Slayer to prepare him for his destiny. Meanwhile, dozens of slaves march across a scorching desert. One of them has a secret that may shed light on who the Dragon Slayer is-the same man the knights are searching for. This slave tells of two boys from warring nations who befriend each other after a peace treaty is signed. Even though Amaran is a commoner and Rallden is a prince, they become like brothers, and grow up together alongside the future princess Elle. But when tensions erupt between the enemy kingdoms, their friendship is put to the test-especially when Amaran falls in love with Elle, who is promised to Rallden. Amaran is torn between his duty to his own kingdom and his love for Elle, but the danger that finds him then is nothing but a stepping stone to his true destiny-a destiny that brings an ancient legend to the forefront of a battle between good and evil.
Book Synopsis The Knights of the Crown by : D'Arcy Jonathan Dacre Boulton
Download or read book The Knights of the Crown written by D'Arcy Jonathan Dacre Boulton and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant contribution to the history of the political life and culture of the later medieval aristocracy. MAURICE KEEN Orders of lay knights - the most famous of which are those of the Garter and the Golden Fleece - were founded at some time between 1325 and 1470 in almost every kingdom of Western Christendom, and played an important part in the life of the court. Jonathan Boulton defines the "monarchical" orders as those with corporate statutes which attached the presidential office to the crown of the princely founder, or made it hereditary in his house. Modelled eitherdirectly or indirectly on the fictional society of the Round Table, they incorporated varying numbers of elements borrowed from the older religious orders of knighthood and from contemporary institutions. This study explores the nature and history of thirteen orders, and reveals them as not only an ingenious supplement to (or replacement for) the feudo-vassalic ties that still bound the leading members of the nobility to their sovereign, but also as the most important institutional embodiments of the secular ideals of chivalry that were at the heart of the international court culture of the age. JONATHAN BOULTON teaches at the University of Notre Dame.
Book Synopsis The Order of the Dragon by : Colleen D. Clements
Download or read book The Order of the Dragon written by Colleen D. Clements and published by Booksurge Publishing. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Order of the Dragon, a bold re-interpretation of the origins of human civilization. Unfortunately for her, the book angered conservative Christian elements within her university, and the next thing she knew, she had been fired. Argung that we should take ancient writers at their word, Clements suggests that early humans were "not alone" in the creation of our civilization. While the theme reminds one of Zecharia Sitchin, Clements approaches her topic differently, working from academic and scientific sources to create possibly the first true history of the culture that created modern civilization. This she calls the Dragon Culture, which thrived prior to 35,000 BC in northern Eurasia. She then traces that culture through the ages, through Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Balkans, Languedoc, the Freemasons, and into the present."--BeyondTheDial.wordpress.com.
