Book Synopsis The Platoon by : Joseph Johns Steward
Download or read book The Platoon written by Joseph Johns Steward and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Joseph Steward fought in the Great War, from the Battle of the Somme to the final offensives of 1918, and he was an acute, unflinching observer of the conflict he took part in - of life and death on the Western Front. He was a writer, too. He recorded his experiences in accurate detail and later in life he wrote a graphic fictionalized account of his wartime career - the story of his war, his comrades and his platoon. His narrative is published here for the first time, edited, annotated and with an introduction by Andrew Robertshaw and Steve Roberts. Their research into Stewards story is a fascinating example of how such work can be used to give a vivid insight into the experiences of a Great War ancestor. About the EditorsAndrew Robertshaw is Curator/Manager of The Royal Logistic Corps Museum in Deepcut, Surrey. For the past twelve years he has been coordinating a group conducting an archaeological dig of British trenches and other sites on the Somme. He frequently appears on television as a commentator on battlefield archaeology and the soldier in history. His publications include A Soldiers Life, The Somme 1st July 1916, Digging the Trenches (with David Kenyon) and Ghosts of the Somme (with Alastair Fraser and Steve Roberts).Steve Roberts is a retired police officer and an ex-regular soldier. He has a keen interest in military history and as a result of his grandfathers service a particular passion for the Great War. He specializes in researching the individuals who served during the period and has worked in this field on a number of television projects. He is a founder member of the Great War archaeology group No Mans Land and also a battlefield guide regularly taking groups to France and Belgium. He has previously co-authored Ghosts on the Somme (with Alastair Fraser and Andrew Robertshaw)

Book Synopsis The Other End of the Spear by : John J. Mcgrath
Download or read book The Other End of the Spear written by John J. Mcgrath and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at several troop categories based on primary function and analyzes the ratio between these categories to develop a general historical ratio. This ratio is called the Tooth-to-Tail Ratio. McGrath's study finds that this ratio, among types of deployed US forces, has steadily declined since World War II, just as the nature of warfare itself has changed. At the same time, the percentage of deployed forces devoted to logistics functions and to base and life support functions have increased, especially with the advent of the large-scale of use of civilian contractors. This work provides a unique analysis of the size and composition of military forces as found in historical patterns. Extensively illustrated with charts, diagrams, and tables. Book Synopsis Order of Battle of Divisions, Index by : Ray Westlake
Download or read book Order of Battle of Divisions, Index written by Ray Westlake and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Index has been extended from those included with Major Becke s original five-volume work (confined generally to Divisional and Brigade references) so as to provide, for the first time, references to the smaller formations battalions, artillery batteries, field companies, field ambulances, machine gun companies, trench mortar batteries, mobile veterinary sections etc. that made up the several divisions covered by Order of Battle of Divisions Parts 1, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B. Page references have been recorded by part number, followed by a forward slash, then page number. In this way a unit appearing on pages 21 of Part 2B and 45 of Part 3A, for example, is shown in the Index as: 2B/21...3A/45. To gather the complete story of a unit (as recorded by Becke) it is recommended that the researcher, having dealt with the main Order of Battle tables and General Notes sections (both indexed) set out for each division, then reads the pages dealing with Formation, Battles, and Engagements (not indexed) where often additional references have been made. Likewise, Notes on Order of Battle pages (not indexed) should also be studied thoroughly. It has not been felt necessary to include Part 4 (Army Council, GHQs, Armies and Corps) in this Index as the existing Contents and Index pages are comprehensively set out and adequate.
