There have been exciting advances in recent years, including the advent of balloon assisted procedures. But, the increase in lasik procedures has led to dry eye as a common complication. This surgical "how to" book shows the general ophthalmologist and occuloplastic specialist how to effectively treat the range of lacrimal disorders.

Book excerpt: While there are books that review lacrimal surgery as a portion of oculoplastic practice, The Lacrimal System: Diagnosis, Management & Surgery, Second Edition, addresses the range of lacrimal disorders in one concise, practical volume. Building off of the success of the first edition, this text includes significantly updated information, as well as new chapters that are complete with high quality color images and illustrations. Lacrimal surgeries are among the most commonly performed ones in oculopastic surgery. The procedures range from unblocking tear ducts in small children with congenital dysmorphology, to correcting dry eye through surgery. As with many of these procedures, the disorders sound minor but the patients’ lives are seriously affected. By broadening the scope of the subject, the editors of The Lacrimal System, Second Edition meet the needs of oculoplastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, residents and fellows who are learning these special procedures.

Book excerpt: This second edition of the highly successful and comprehensive text on lacrimal disorders presents the latest developments in this rapidly evolving field. The new edition includes six new chapters, additional photographs and all chapters now have a separate section on recent advances. Written by experts in the field of dacryology, this book is a practical guide to evaluating and managing patients with lacrimal disorders. It methodically discusses basic anatomy and underlying pathology, patient evaluation, and all surgical procedures currently used to manage such disorders. It thoroughly yet concisely reviews surgical modalities including the endoscopic and micro-endoscopic approaches and provides ample illustrations for a better understanding. Since familiarity with a surgical technique is incomplete without the knowledge of risk factors and red flags, the text highlights ways of dealing with surgical complications and failure. Further it discusses in detail controversial topics and treatment dilemmas and reviews the current consensus among the experts. This is an up-to-date reference work for dacryologists, oculoplastic surgeons, general ophthalmologists as well as fellows in training.

Book excerpt: This is the first textbook to offer a comprehensive account of ocular prosthetics and the evidence used to underpin and support this field of healthcare. It does so by bringing together information from ophthalmology, prosthetic eye and contact lens literature, and from experts actively engaged in these fields. The book describes the psychological, anatomical and physiological aspects of eye loss as well as surgical procedures for removing the eye, patient evaluation, constructing prosthetic eyes (including prosthetic and surgical techniques for dealing with socket complications), the socket’s response to prosthetic eyes, prosthetic eye maintenance and the history of prosthetic eyes. Though primarily intended for prosthetists, ophthalmologists, ophthalmic nurses, optometrists and students in the fields of ocular medicine, maxillofacial medicine and anaplastology, the book also offers a useful resource for other health workers and family members who care for prosthetic eye patients, and for those patients seeking a deeper understanding of the issues affecting them than they can find elsewhere.

This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 8007 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping up to date with advances in comprehensive ophthalmology and in the ophthalmic sub-specialties is extremely difficult because of the accelerating rapidity with which new information and technology become available and the diminishing time and opportunity for practitioners and trainees to read and learn. The first edition of Albert and Jakobiec’s Principles and Practice (1994) was conceived with the idea of utilizing an electronic, updated version in which the chapters were revised by the chapter authors on an annual or semi-annual basis, but the technology was not sufficiently advanced to achieve this goal. Subsequent editions (2000 and 2008) were organized by Saunders and the last published by Elsevier (of which Springer has obtained the complete rights to move forward with the 4th edition, see attachment). For nearly three decades, this text has provided its readers with authoritative and comprehensive coverage of clinical ophthalmology, written and edited by a group of authors who represented a “Who’s Who” in ophthalmology. By using Springer’s Meteor platform, with its ability to allow authors and editors access to updating their chapters online annually/semi-annually, and with the recruitment of select chapter authors, this work’s usefulness as the standard text in ophthalmology will be maintained and expanded upon by Springer. The 4th edition of this comprehensive and authoritative text is written by hundreds of the most distinguished authorities from around the world and edited by four leaders in the field, providing today's best answers to every question that arises in ophthalmology practice. Richly illustrated with thousands of high quality, full color, clinically-relevant images, Albert and Jakobiec's Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology, 4th Edition covers every scientific and clinical principle in ophthalmology, ensuring that the reader will always be able to find the guidance needed to diagnose and manage patients' ocular problems and meet today's standards of care. Written for practicing ophthalmologists and trainees, this book delivers in-depth guidance on new diagnostic approaches, operative techniques, and treatment options, as well as coherent explanations of new scientific concept and its clinical importance. The 4th edition will prove to be the source every practicing clinician needs to efficiently and confidently overcome any clinical challenge they may face. Updates include new chapters on anterior and posterior segment diseases, as well as chapters more focused on treatment, plus thousands of new, high-quality, color images and illustrations, updated references, and information on the most cutting-edge technology used by clinicians in their practices today. Additionally, readers will enjoy the same, user-friendly, full-color design they remember from the previous edition, complete with many at-a-glance summary tables, algorithms, boxes, and diagrams that allow the reader to locate the assistance needed more rapidly than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: “About every ten years a new book appears on any given medical specialty subject. Naturally, this is not because the entire body of knowledge on that specialty is overhauled every ten years but because the progress made over a decade usually warrants expressing new perspectives on quite a few diseases. Orbital oncology certainly qualifies as a subspecialty that merits an update every decade. At least two or three excellent textbooks on orbital tumors have been written since the mid-1980s. This book reports advances in knowledge about orbital diseases and their treatment and offers an up-to-date, single-volume reference for orbital tumors with particular emphasis on new improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Part I comprises advances in oncogenesis and its relationship to orbital tumors. Changes in the biological behavior of diseases in the general patient population are much slower than technological advances; nevertheless, those alterations take place as well. One of the major medical issues of our time, for example, is the changes in the immunological status of individuals. This issue influences the entire field of medicine, particularly oncology, including the treatment of orbital tumors. Chapters 2 to 5 summarize these influences. Medical genetics gained momentum during the past two decades and now affects the clinical practice of almost every discipline of medicine, including ophthalmology and orbitology. Chapters on principles of molecular genetics and immunosurveillance mechanisms of neoplasia and on the occurrence of multiplt, malignant neoplasms in retinoblastoma have been included to apply molecular concepts to clinical practice related to orbital tumors. Advances in one discipline often directly benefit practice in another field. In orbitology, no development has been more influential than the revolution in imaging techniques, including ultrasonography, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance methods. Four chapters in Part II are devoted to the role of imaging in diganosis of orbital tumors. Other diagnostic advances entailing immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, gene microarray, and the polymerase chain reaction are summarized in a separate chapter on orbital biopsy.”
