Graduating in 1957, he entered flight training and in 1958 earned his wings as a naval aviator. During the Vietnam War, he completed 514 combat missions, many as Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron 164 on board the attack aircraft carrier Hancock (CVA-19). He commanded the combat stores ship San Jose (AFS-7) and the aircraft carrier Coral Sea (CV-43) and served as Commander Carrier Group Seven. Admiral Arthur's staff tours included assignments with Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet in Hawaii, the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force, Commander in Chief, Central Command (twice), and the Bureau of Naval Personnel. He served as the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Logistics before being selected to command the U.S. Seventh Fleet based in Yokosuka, Japan. In that capacity, he led U.S. and multinational forces in Operation Desert Storm. Admiral Arthur capped his 38-year career in the Navy as the Vice Chief of Naval Operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most significant part of Admiral Struble's memoir is comprised of descriptions of his role in the area of amphibious warfare in World War II and Korea. Struble graduated from the Naval Academy in 1915 and served in several ships as a junior officer, including the refrigerated stores ship USS Glacier (AF-4) during the early part of World I and soon after commanded the destroyers USS Stevens (DD-86) and USS Shubrick (DD-268). In the 1920s he was in the crew of the battleship USS California (BB-44) and remained on board as a member of the staff of Commander Battleships and later Commander Battle Force. He was involved in amphibious landing exercises in the early 1930s on the staff of Commander Battleship Division Three, 64-65. Duty in the battleship USS New York (BB-34) and the heavy cruiser USS Portland (CA-33) was sandwiched around service as communications officer of the 12th Naval District. He had tours in the politico-military Central Division of OpNav in the late 1930s and early 1940s. At the outset of World War II he commanded the light cruiser CA Trenton (CL-11). In 1943-44 Struble served as chief of staff to Commander Task Force 122 for the American naval portion of the invasion of Normandy, France, on D-Day. Shortly after, he commanded amphibious groups that liberated the Philippine Islands in the war against Japan. He had a number of encounters with Army General Douglas MacArthur during that campaign and a few years later during the Korean War. After the war's end, Struble commanded Mine Force Pacific Fleet and Amphibious Force Pacific Fleet. He served 1948-50 as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Operations) and in 1950-51 was Commander Seventh Fleet at the outset of the Korean War. The oral history contains Struble's detailed recollections of the September 1950 invasion of Inchon, Korea. In 1951-52 he was Commander First Fleet and from 1952 to 1955 was assigned as a U.S. representative to the United Nations.

Book excerpt: Puzzled by the disjunction between global trends and US foreign policy since the end of the Cold War, mostly American scholars of political science, law, and economics explore the causes and consequences of US ambivalence to multilateral cooperation. They consider such dimensions as the growing influence of domestic factors, US grand strategy, the chemical weapons convention, and the International Criminal Court. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first-ever biography of Vice Admiral Willis A. Lee Jr., who served a key role during World War II in the Pacific. Recognizing the achievements and legacy of one of the war's top combat admirals has been long overdue until now. Battleship Commander explores Lee's life from boyhood in Kentucky through his eventual service as commander of the fast battleships from 1942 to 1945. Paul Stillwell draws on more than 150 first-person accounts from those who knew and served with Lee from boyhood until the time of his death. Said to be down to earth, modest, forgiving, friendly, and with a wry sense of humor, Lee eschewed the media and, to the extent possible, left administrative details to others. Stillwell relates the sequential building of a successful career, illustrating Admiral Lee's focus on operational, tactical, and strategic concerns. During his service in the Navy Department from 1939 to 1942, Lee prepared the U.S. Navy for war at sea, and was involved in inspecting designs for battleships, cruisers, aircraft carriers, and destroyers. He sent observers to Britain to report on Royal Navy operations during the war against Germany and made plans to send an action team to mainland China to observe conditions for possible later Allied landings there. Putting his focus on the need to equip U.S. warships with radar and antiaircraft guns, Lee was one of the few flag officers of his generation who understood the tactical advantage of radar, especially during night battles. In 1942 Willis Lee became commander of the first division of fast battleships to operate in the Pacific. During that service, he commanded Task Force 64, which achieved a tide-turning victory in a night battle near Guadalcanal in November 1942. Lee missed two major opportunities for surface actions against the Japanese. In June 1944, in the Marianas campaign, he declined to engage because his ships were not trained adequately to operate together in surface battles. In October 1944, Admiral William Halsey's bungled decisions denied Lee's ships an opportunity for combat. Continuing his career of service near the end of the war, Lee, in the summer of 1945, directed anti-kamikaze research efforts in Casco Bay, Maine. While Lee's wartime successes and failures make for compelling reading, what is here in this biography is a balanced look at the man and officer.

Book excerpt: War in the Shallows, published in 2015 by the Naval History and Heritage Command, is the authoritative account of the U.S. Navy's hard-fought battle along Vietnam's rivers and coastline from 1965-1968. At the height of the U.S. Navy's involvement in the Vietnam War, the Navy's coastal and riverine forces included more than 30,000 Sailors and over 350 patrol vessels ranging in size from riverboats to destroyers. These forces developed the most extensive maritime blockade in modern naval history and fought pitched battles against Viet Cong units in the Mekong Delta and elsewhere. War in the Shallows explores the operations of the Navy's three inshore task forces from 1965 to 1968. It also delves into other themes such as basing, technology, tactics, and command and control. Finally, using oral history interviews, it reconstructs deckplate life in South Vietnam, focusing in particular on combat waged by ordinary Sailors. Vietnam was the bloodiest war in recent naval history and War in the Shallows strives above all else to provide insight into the men who fought it and honor their service and sacrifice. Illustrated throughout with photographs and maps. Author John Darrell Sherwood has served as a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) since 1997. -- Provided by publisher.
