It offers insights into the political views of the author and his perception of the relation between Jews and non-Jews, especially in the field of religion and ethics. The present study consists of three parts: 1. introductory questions; 2. a literary analysis of the book, translation, and commentary; 3. the social setting of the book. It aims to further the scholarly use of the third Sibylline book and to improve our knowledge of early Judaism in its Graeco-Roman environment.

Book Synopsis The Weimar Moment by : Leonard V. Kaplan
Download or read book The Weimar Moment written by Leonard V. Kaplan and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Weimar Moment's evocative assault on closure and political reaction, its offering of democracy against the politics of narrow self-interest cloaked in nationalist appeals to Volk and "community"--or, as would be the case in Nazi Germany, "race"--cannot but appeal to us today. This appeal--its historical grounding and content, its complexities and tensions, its variegated expressions across the networks of power and thought--is the essential context of the present volume, whose basic premise is unhappiness with Hegel's remark that we learn no more from history than we cannot learn from it. The challenge of the papers in this volume is to provide the material to confront the present effectively drawing from what we can and do understand.

Book Synopsis The Unperceived Continuity of Isaiah by : James H. Charlesworth
Download or read book The Unperceived Continuity of Isaiah written by James H. Charlesworth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume highlights the textual evolution of the biblical book called Isaiah from the eighth to the third centuries BCE. The book was probably the most important Scripture for the Community that collected or composed the Dead Sea Scrolls; it significantly shaped the life and thoughts of John the Baptizer, Jesus, Paul, and the Evangelists. Distinguished scholars from the United States, Israel, Greece, and elsewhere discuss the continuing influence of Isaiah from antiquity to today and significantly through Jewish and Christian liturgies. With high-profile contributors including Dale Allison, Jeffrey Chadwick, James Charlesworth, and Emanuel Tov, the volume explores how the Book of Isaiah influenced Jewish and Christian texts and life for nearly three millennia. The collection develops from the insights and continuity of Isaiah itself to its relevance in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the lives of John the Baptizer and Jesus, as well as Paul's Letter to the Romans and the Intra-Canonical Gospels. This collection presents highly creative and ground-breaking scholarship focused on the origin and vital role of one of the most influential books in our culture.
Book Synopsis Aristotle and the Theology of the Living Immortals by : Richard Bodeus
Download or read book Aristotle and the Theology of the Living Immortals written by Richard Bodeus and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2000-09-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that Aristotle used "the most traditional Greek ideas about the gods" to develop and defend his physical, metaphysical, and ethical teachings. This revolutionary thesis stands in stark contrast to studies of Aristotle's texts that normally portray him as a "natural theologian" using rational tools to elaborate his own conception of God or the gods. Bodeus argues that Aristotle is more closely aligned with popular Greek religion than is usually thought, and attention to the ethical and political writings reveals more about Aristotle's resources for conceiving the gods than study of his theoretical works. For Bodeus, Aristotle was a refined polytheist who held that the gods were living immortals and that one could attribute to them wisdom, goodness, and benevolent concern for human beings. The author's approach is at odds with the dominant interpretation, which holds that Aristotle's unmoved mover presents his true view of God. This leads to the argument that the philosopher's apparent endorsements of popular religious ideas should be taken seriously and that his inquiries about the unmoved mover belong strictly to theoretical philosophy, which is unable to study the gods. From this novel perspective, many of Aristotle's texts appear in a new light.

Book Synopsis Summary Catalogue of European Decorative Arts in the J. Paul Getty Museum by : Gillian Wilson
Download or read book Summary Catalogue of European Decorative Arts in the J. Paul Getty Museum written by Gillian Wilson and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002-03-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Paul Getty had a passion for the exquisitely made furniture and decorative objects of eighteenth-century France, which he began collecting in the 1930s. Gillian Wilson, curator of decorative arts since 1971, has broadened and strengthened the collection, adding Boulle furniture, mounted oriental porcelain, tapestries, clocks, ceramics, and more. In the 1980s and 1990s the Museum continued to enlarge its decorative arts holdings, creating a European sculpture department in 1984 and adding glass, maiolica, goldsmiths’ work, pietre dure, and furniture from Italy and Northern Europe. This book is a revised and expanded edition of Decorative Arts: An Illustrated Summary Catalogue of the Collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum (1993). In addition to more than forty recent acquisitions—among these four wall sconces from Versailles that once belonged to Marie Antoinette and an elaborate upholstered bed from the collection of Karl Lagerfeld—it includes the results of years of research. Designed for scholars, students, and devotees of the decorative arts, this volume provides a comprehensive look at the Getty's fine collection.
