Book excerpt: Excerpt from Opus Epistolarum Des Erasmi Roterodami, Vol. 1: Denuo Recognitum Et Auctum; 1848-1514 This work, which had its origin in an attempt to use the correspondence of Erasmus for an Oxford prize essay, was undertaken with the encouragement of the late Professor Houde, at the time when he was lecturing here on Erasmus. It has occupied my leisure for the last thirteen years, and has been carried on under the gloom of Indian summers and in high valleys in Kashmir. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Opus Epistolarum Des. Erasmi Roterdami, Vol. 1: 1484-1514 In dealing with the text it has been impossible to attempt any uniformity of orthography. The sources for the cor respondence are various, with very different degrees of authority: original letters in the handwriting of Erasmus and his friends; letters copied by his servant-pupils; letters copied by contemporaries or by later hands; books printed in his lifetime, where the orthography varies considerably according to the practice of the printer; and books printed under the direction of later scholars, whose critical standards unhappily allowed them to adopt the orthography deemed correct in their own day in preference to that of the originals. To construct from these various sources some attempt at a standard orthography for Erasmus himself might have been possible, though laborious; for his multitudinous corre spondents it was entirely out of the question. I have contented myself with the endeavour to reproduce with fidelity the earliest source available in each case, whether manuscript or printed book, except where obvious deprava tion of the text has rendered correction necessary; or where on rare occasions too close adherence to the original, especially in the use of the termination -e for -se, would have caused obscurity. Contractions and abbreviations I have not at tempted to preserve; and in the forms of letters the long 8 is discarded, forj (usually only in capitals or ij) i is printed, and for u I have adopted the form v as initial, u as medial or final, according to the practice of Erasmus himself and most of his friends. In punctuation, whilst adhering as far as possible to the earliest text, I have allowed myself a free hand; and in the use of capital letters only modern require ments have been considered The practice of the Renaissance in writing Greek differed so widely from our own that I have made no attempt to reproduce it. Erasmi Roterodami, Vol. 2: Denuo Recognitum Et Auctum; 1514-1517 The Corrigenda found in some of the volumes of letters have usually been treated as the true readings of those editions; but occasionally the uncorrected text and the correction have both been given the latter following immediately after the former. The small superior figures attached to letter-numbers refer to letters answered, the inferior to letters answering. Book Synopsis Love and Friendship in the Western Tradition by : James McEvoy
Download or read book Love and Friendship in the Western Tradition written by James McEvoy and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love and Friendship in the Western Tradition comprises a collection of essays written over a 25 year period by the late Rev. Professor James McEvoy on the theme of friendship. The book traces the genesis and development of philosophical treatments of friendship from Greek philosophy, through the Middle Ages, to modern and postmodern philosophy. The collection’s three major concerns are: (1) the history of philosophical discussions of friendship; (2) the role of friendship in the cultivation of the philosophical life; (3) the marginalization of friendship as a theme for philosophical reflection and practice in the modern period. As the author was primarily a medievalist, a great deal of the focus of the essays is on the development of the theme of friendship in the Middle Ages (in the thought of Augustine, Aquinas, Aelred of Rievaulx, Henry of Ghent, Robert Grosseteste, etc.). However, this focus, while a value in itself, also serves to connect philosophical perspectives on friendship from before and after the middle ages. It connects to the time before inasmuch as much of the work done on friendship in the Middle Ages is anchored in interpretations of Aristotle and Plato, and it connects to the time after by providing a counterpoint to the modern paradigm of what constitutes the philosophical life. The collection combines historical with thematic approaches to scholarship on this issue and is one of the only books of its kind to do so. It is, perhaps, unique in its historical sweep and will prove to be a canonical source for further research on this topic.

Download or read book Reformations written by Carlos M. N. Eire and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 914 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fast-paced survey of Western civilization’s transition from the Middle Ages to modernity brings that tumultuous period vividly to life. Carlos Eire, popular professor and gifted writer, chronicles the two-hundred-year era of the Renaissance and Reformation with particular attention to issues that persist as concerns in the present day. Eire connects the Protestant and Catholic Reformations in new and profound ways, and he demonstrates convincingly that this crucial turning point in history not only affected people long gone, but continues to shape our world and define who we are today. The book focuses on the vast changes that took place in Western civilization between 1450 and 1650, from Gutenberg’s printing press and the subsequent revolution in the spread of ideas to the close of the Thirty Years’ War. Eire devotes equal attention to the various Protestant traditions and churches as well as to Catholicism, skepticism, and secularism, and he takes into account the expansion of European culture and religion into other lands, particularly the Americas and Asia. He also underscores how changes in religion transformed the Western secular world. A book created with students and nonspecialists in mind, Reformations is an inspiring, provocative volume for any reader who is curious about the role of ideas and beliefs in history.

Book Synopsis Luther's lives by : Elizabeth Vandiver
Download or read book Luther's lives written by Elizabeth Vandiver and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This volume brings together two important contemporary accounts of the life of Martin Luther in a confrontation that had been postponed for more than four hundred and fifty years. The first of these is written after Luther’s death, when it was rumoured that demons had seized the Reformer on his deathbed and dragged him off to Hell. In response to these rumours, Luther’s friend and colleague, Philip Melanchthon wrote and published a brief encomium of the Reformer in 1548. A completely new translation of this text appears in this book. It was in response to Melanchthon’s work that Johannes Cochlaeus completed and published his own monumental life of Luther in 1549, which is translated and made available in English for the first time in this volume. Such is the detail and importance of Cochlaeus’s life of Luther that for an eyewitness account of the Reformation – and the beginnings of the Catholic Counter-Reformation – there is simply no other historical document to compare.
