Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of jet engines has become an integral part of maintaining air superiority. In order to achieve the most advanced engine, research has turned to traditional optimization methods to aid in creating new engine designs. To develop simplified mathematical models representative of the engine, the engine can be separated into its components. A jet engine has three major elements, the compressor, combustion chamber and turbine. This research attempts to make an initial analysis of a two stage compressor to determine values of blade angles and spacing to chord ratios for both stages that produce the highest possible efficiency for the overall two stage compressor. A pitch line model is developed for a two stage compressor and is used in conjunction with a optimization method to solve for the on design air angles and spacing to chord ratios. The results of the model were compared to examples available in current literature to ensure the model properly represents a compressor stage. The off design performance of the results was calculated to determine how the designs for on design operated under off design conditions. Since practical compressors are made up of many stages, consideration is given to which optimization method would be most useful in solving for a multistage compressor.

Book excerpt: A six-stage axial-flow compressor with a tip speed of 550 feet per second and a flat operating characteristics at constant speed has been designed and tested. It was designed for a constant power input per pound of flow in expectation that this would result in a wider mass-flow operating range at a given stagnation-presssure ratio. The design specific weight flow was 21.3 pounds per second per square foot of frontal area at atmospheric discharge with a stagnation-pressure ratio of 3.25 and an inlet hub-tip radius ratio of 0.7. Several configurations consisting of various blade setting angles and solidities were tested. Tests showed that the design flow, pressure ratio, and flat operating characteristic were obtained over a range of 10 percent of design flow at a peak efficiency of 82 percent for design conditions. The compressor had a possible immediate application for air removal from a large slotted-throat transonic wind tunnel, but the design theory could apply to any low-speed industrial compressor or second spool of a turbojet engine.

Book excerpt: With the further development of axial blowers into highly loaded flow machines, the influence of the diameter ratio upon air output and efficiency gains in significance. Clarification of this matter is important for single-stage axial compressors, and is of still greater importance for multistage ones, and particularly for aircraft power plants. Tests with a single-stage axial blower gave a decrease in the attainable maximum pressure coefficient and optimum efficiency as the diameter ratio increased. The decrease must be ascribed chiefly to the guide surface of the hub and housing between the blades increasing with the diameter ratio.

Book excerpt: The design of an axial flow compressor stage has been formulated as a nonlinear mathematical programming problem with the objective of minimizing the aerodynamic losses, and the weight of the stage while, maximizing the compressor stall margin. Aerodynamic as well as mechanical constraints are considered in the problem formulation. A method of evaluating the objective function and constraints of the problem with a pitchline analysis is presented. The optimization problem is solved by using the penalty function method in which the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell variable metric minimization technique is employed. Designs involving the optimization of efficiency, weight of the stage, and stall margin are presented and the results discussed with particular reference to a multivariable objective function.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete experimental results are presented from tests of an axial compressor stage designed for a flow per frontal area of 39.7 lb/sec/ft square, a total pressure ratio of 1.912 and a tip speed of 1500 ft/sec. The performance objectives of this stage were derived from a preliminary design study of a multi-stage compressor for an advanced turbojet engine. Since the most serious aerodynamic design problems of the over-all compressor were observed to be associated with the first stage, this stage was chosen as the subject of a research program. Results of the tests indicated that, at design speed, design flow was achieved with a rotor isentropic efficiency of 90.4 percent, a stage isentropic efficiency of 88.2 percent and a stage total pressure ratio of 2.065.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbomachines are used extensively in Aerospace, Power Generation, and Oil & Gas Industries. Efficiency of these machines is often an important factor and has led to the continuous effort to improve the design to achieve better efficiency. The axial flow compressor is a major component in a gas turbine with the turbine's overall performance depending strongly on compressor performance. Traditional analysis of axial compressors involves through flow calculations, isolated blade passage analysis, Quasi-3D blade-to-blade analysis, single-stage (rotor-stator) analysis, and multi-stage analysis involving larger design cycles. In the current study, the detailed flow through a 15 stage axial compressor is analyzed using a 3-D Navier Stokes CFD solver in a parallel computing environment. Methodology is described for steady state (frozen rotor stator) analysis of one blade passage per component. Various effects such as mesh type and density, boundary conditions, tip clearance and numerical issues such as turbulence model choice, advection model choice, and parallel processing performance are analyzed. A high sensitivity of the predictions to the above was found. Physical explanation to the flow features observed in the computational study are given. The total pressure rise verses mass flow rate was computed.
