Book excerpt: The operational amplifier ("op amp") is the most versatile and widely used type of analog IC, used in audio and voltage amplifiers, signal conditioners, signal converters, oscillators, and analog computing systems. Almost every electronic device uses at least one op amp. This book is Texas Instruments' complete professional-level tutorial and reference to operational amplifier theory and applications. Among the topics covered are basic op amp physics (including reviews of current and voltage division, Thevenin's theorem, and transistor models), idealized op amp operation and configuration, feedback theory and methods, single and dual supply operation, understanding op amp parameters, minimizing noise in op amp circuits, and practical applications such as instrumentation amplifiers, signal conditioning, oscillators, active filters, load and level conversions, and analog computing. There is also extensive coverage of circuit construction techniques, including circuit board design, grounding, input and output isolation, using decoupling capacitors, and frequency characteristics of passive components. The material in this book is applicable to all op amp ICs from all manufacturers, not just TI. Unlike textbook treatments of op amp theory that tend to focus on idealized op amp models and configuration, this title uses idealized models only when necessary to explain op amp theory. The bulk of this book is on real-world op amps and their applications; considerations such as thermal effects, circuit noise, circuit buffering, selection of appropriate op amps for a given application, and unexpected effects in passive components are all discussed in detail. *Published in conjunction with Texas Instruments *A single volume, professional-level guide to op amp theory and applications *Covers circuit board layout techniques for manufacturing op amp circuits.

Book excerpt: Operational Amplifiers, Second Edition, provides a more comprehensive coverage of known modes of operational amplifier action. Greater emphasis is given to the factors influencing the performance limitations of practical circuits to make the book immediately useful to the ever increasing number of operational amplifier users. The book begins with a preliminary introduction to the capabilities of operational amplifiers. It then explains the significance of the performance parameters of practical amplifiers and describes amplifier testing procedures. Separate chapters illustrate the commonly used modes of operation for an operational amplifier. These include applications in basic scaling circuits, nonlinear circuits, and integrators and differentiators. The final chapter provides a resume and an overview of the practical considerations which the designer must take into account in order to exploit fully the operational amplifier approach to electronic instrumentation. This book is intended for both the user and the potential user of operational amplifiers and as such it should prove equally valuable to both the undergraduate student and the practicing engineer in the measurement sciences.

This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of an opamp is a fairly complex task in itself. This thesis deals with the optimization of two-stage and folded cascode opamps. The optimization problems are considered to be non-linear constrained optimization problems; the constraints being non-linear. The cost function and constraints are formulated using the level 1 MOSFET model. The Matlab function 1fmincon2 has been used for the actual optimization process. A GUI is provided for the user so that the specifications can be readily changed. The GUI designed in Visual Basic accepts the specifications and then writes the constraints file based on that. It then proceeds to optimize the design in Matlab. In case of two-stage opamp, there is an option to choose the set of functions whose weight can be varied in the cost function. The cost functions are, DC gain, size, power and gain bandwidth. The optimization process creates an array of points for the design and allows the user to select any point for simulation with PSpice. For a folded cascode operational amplifier optimization, the initial guess is very important, because the problem is highly non-linear. Taking this into consideration, the cost function is kept fixed as the size and the initial guesses are varied over a wide range, which can also be changed by the user. The plots in this case are the parametrical functions of the opamp, viz. DC gain vs. size vs. power, and gain bandwidth vs. phase margin vs. slew rate. Again, the user can select any point from the plot to simulate in SPICE. The software writes a SPICE netlist for the specified point and also launches PSpice, so that the design can be readily verified. This tool has been developed for analog designers who can appreciate the tradeoffs in the design procedure. A variety of optimal points is generated so that the designer can decide for herself/himself the specifications that can be compromised. An Excel file is written so that the details of the design elements are accessible to the user.

Book excerpt: Frequency Compensation Techniques for Low-Power Operational Amplifiers is intended for professional designers of integrated amplifiers, emphasizing low-voltage and low-power solutions. The book bridges the gap between the professional designer's needs and available techniques for frequency compensation. It does so by explaining existing techniques and introducing several new techniques including Hybrid Nested Miller compensation, Multipath Miller Zero cancellation and Multipath Conditionally Stable compensation. All compensation techniques are treated in a stage-number-based order, progressing from a single transistor to circuits with six stages and more. Apart from discussing the mathematical basis of the compensation methods, the book provides the reader with the factual information that is required for practicing the design of integrated feedback amplifiers and many worked out examples. What is more, many bipolar and CMOS operational amplifier realizations, along with their measurement results, prove the effectiveness of the compensation techniques in real-life circuits. The text focuses on low-voltage, low-power integrated amplifiers. Many of the presented bipolar circuits operate at supply voltages down to 1V, while several CMOS amplifiers that function correctly just slightly above this voltage are demonstrated. The lowest measured power consumption amounts to 17muW for a class AB CMOS opAmp with 120dB gain. Despite this attention to low voltage and low power, the frequency compensation strategies provided are universally applicable. The fundamental approach followed leads to efficient compensation strategies that are well guarded against the parameter variations inherent to the mass-fabrication of integrated circuits. The book is essential reading for practicing analog design engineers and researchers in the field. It is also suitable as a text for an advanced course on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research effort explores efficient methods for the design syn- thesis of monolithic CMOS operational amplifiers. A synthesis system has been developed. It, called OPASYN, takes as inputs system level specifications, fabrication-dependent technology parameters, and geometric layout rules. Based on the general domain of the specifications, the program first selects an appropriate circuit topology from a database using heuristic pruning of the decision tree. Optimal values for the set of design parameters of the chosen circuit are then determined so as to meet the sign objectives. Analytic models of several widely applicable operational amplifier circuit topologies have been developed to eliminate expensive circuit simulation and sensitivity analysis in the inner loop of the optimization step. Subsequently, design- rule-correct mask geometries are constructed using a macro cell layout style. Primitive circuit elements such as transistors, transistor pairs, and capa- citors are produced by parameterized leaf cell generators and assembled accord- ing to circuit-dependent slicing trees that guarantee sound arrangements of the individual components. The synthesis process if fast enough for the program to be interactively used at the system design level by system designers who are inexperienced in op amp design.

This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The operational amplifier (op amp) is a fundamental building block in analog integrated circuit design. For low power-supply voltages, the common-mode input voltage and the output voltage of op amps are always required to be able to swing from the negative power-supply rail to the positive power-supply rail, i.e., rail-to-rail. In this dissertation, op amps with rail-to-rail input and output capability are investigated. This dissertation mainly focuses on the rail-to-rail input stage design. Two different rail-to-rail input stages with a single differential pair and a common-mode adapter are presented. The common-mode adapter is used to shift the common-mode input voltage. Two new common-mode adapters for the input stage with a single differential pair are developed. The first common-mode adapter is based on a pseudo-differential pair, and the second one is based on current subtraction. Three bipolar and two CMOS op amps with rail-to-rail input and output capability are designed. The circuit simulation and chip test results are given in this dissertation. There are many aspects of performance for op amps. With different topologies, op amps may have different performance. One certain op amp may be good at some aspects but poor at others. The General System Performance Theory is a systematic method for system performance analysis. In order to get a single figure of merit, the General System Performance Theory is applied to compare the overall performance of the designed three different bipolar rail-to-rail op amps.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This report describes how expert design knowledge of a high-gain fully differential op-amp was encoded into an analog circuit synthesis routine in terms of the extensively studied mathematical problem of nonlinear optimization. Design constraints have been incorporated into the code in a form that closely resembles manually derived analytical expressions for the op-amp performance characteristics of interest. Designs that match the performance characteristics of a manually designed op-amp have been produced automatically. This research also lays the groundwork for integrating the op-amp design block into a higher level pipelined analog-to-digital converter designer."
