Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Water distribution system connects consumers to sources of water, using hydraulic components, such as pipes, valves, and reservoirs. The engineer faced with the design of such a system, or of additions to an existing system, has to select the sizes of its components. Also he has to consider the way in which the operational components, pumps and valves, will be used to supply the required demands with adequate pressures. The network has to perform adequately under varying demand loads, hydraulic and operational conditions. Operational decisions for these loads are essentially part of the design process, since one cannot separate the so-called design decisions, i.e. the sizing of components, from the operational decisions; they are two inseparable parts of one problem. This work has therefore presented a method for optimizing the design of a water distribution network system using pipe diameter as decision variable under the required demand loading and hydraulic conditions. It has been established that increasing the minimum pressure will lead to the reduction in the required pipe diameter which will in turn reduce the cost of installation. The modelling approach developed can be used by engineers and planners to obtain economical pipe sizes for a network designed to serve newly planned layouts.

GA methodology is an evolutionary process, basically imitating evolution process of nature. GA is essentially an efficient search method basically for nonlinear optimization cases. The genetic operations take place within the population of chromosomes. By means of various operators, the genetic knowledge in chromosomes change continuously and the success of the population progressively increases as a result of these operations. GA optimization is also well suited for optimization of water distribution systems, especially large and complex systems. The primary objective of this study is optimization of a water distribution network by GA. GA operations are realized on a special program developed by the author called RealPipe. RealPipe optimizes given water network distribution systems by considering capital cost of pipes only.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we develop a bi-level optimization model for recovery of a disrupted water distribution system. The model minimizes the total cost of recovery of the system. The cost includes the repair cost of the system and systemic impact of disruption on the system during the repair process. The systemic cost is calculated in terms of the unmet demand while the system is still damaged. The upper level problem is to schedule the repair tasks, and the lower level problem is to optimize the supply of water (optimal mitigation) given the schedule from upper level problem. The upper level problem is solved using Simulated Annealing, and the lower level problem uses a Generalized Reduced Gradient algorithm. We first apply and validate the model on a small water distribution system with only three elements damaged due to disruption. In this case, the recovery process requires tasks that can be performed in only one mode. We later apply the model to a larger and more complex water distribution system with eight elements damaged due to disruption. We perform three different experiments on this system . In the first experiment, limited resources are available at each time period. In the second experiment, the resources are increased by 50%, and in third experiment, some tasks are provided with an additional mode. The results show that the availability of resources has a significant impact on total cost of recovery of systems. Adding modes to a few tasks can help in reducing the total cost of disruption on the system.

With regard to the first topic, the following aspects are addressed: pressure-driven formulations, algorithms for the optimal location of control valves to minimize leakage, the benefits of water discharge prediction for the remote real time control of valves, and transients generated by pumps operating as turbines. In the context of the second topic, a topological taxonomy of WDNs is presented, and partitioning methods for the creation of district metered areas are compared. In relation to the third topic, the vulnerability to trihalomethane is assessed, and a statistical optimization model to minimize heavy metal releases is presented. Finally, the fourth topic focusses on the estimation of non-revenue water, including leakage and unauthorized consumption, and on the assessment of service under intermittent supply conditions.

Book excerpt: Traditional mathematical optimization methods, such as linear programming (LP), nonlinear programming (NLP) and dynamic programming (DP), often have drawbacks in practice. To overcome these drawbacks, various meta-heuristic optimization techniques have been developed. This study proposes a new meta- heuristic algorithm which mimics musical performance, and names as Harmony Search (HS). The HS algorithm is applied to five problems: a continuous function optimization, a hydrologic parameter calibration, a traveling salesman problem, an optimal design of water supply network, and an optimal expansion of water supply network. The comparison of solutions obtained by HS and other optimization techniques shows that the HS algorithm can find better solutions in less number of iterations. The new algorithm can solve continuous-variable problems as well as discrete- variable problems without unnecessary restrictions imposed by calculus-based algorithms.
