Reinemann The research theme for this dissertation is optimization of milking management at the quarter level. Milking management is defined in 3 ways. Firstly, milking speed, is defined as kg of milk harvested per unit time between teatcup attachment and detachment. Secondly, gentleness of milking, is defined as milking where teat canal keratin turnover is optimal, teat tissue is not congested or otherwise damaged by the milking process and new intramammary infection risk is not increased. Finally, milk production efficiency, is defined by milk production rate (kg/h) of cows and the resulting milk available for harvest at the time of milking. The objectives for this research are: assess the effect of mouthpiece chamber vacuum on teat-end congestion; develop a methodology to quantify the effects of vacuum, pulsation, and liner compression conditions on teat congestion occurs and milking speed; describe cow level factors which are associated with milk flow rate during the peak milk flow period; describe the association between peak milk flow rate and clinical mastitis in a North American housed cow; describe quarter level milk production variability; describe the association between quarter level milk production rate and milking interval and assess if reduction in milking interval in mid-lactation affects milk production rate; assess if incomplete milking, defined at the quarter level, affects quarter milk production rate. The research was conducted using experiments manipulating milking machine settings at the quarter and udder level in addition to manipulation of milking interval in an automatic milking system. An observational study in a large commercial herd using an automatic milking system was also undertaken. Highlights of research results include: the importance of mouthpiece chamber vacuum in teat-end congestion formation and prediction of liner performance using a central composite design; the characterization of cow level factors milking interval or, day in milk, and their association with peak milk flow rate; the characterization of intra-udder quarter milk production variability; and the effect of under-milking on milk production rate at the quarter level.

Book excerpt: The topic of this dissertation was to understand the dynamics of quarter milking, its interaction with other factors (e.g., quarter milk yield, milking interval) and to explore milking management practices that lead to an increase in milking efficiency in automatic and generate knowledge that can contribute to conventional milking systems, while maintaining milk yield and mammary gland health. The term milking efficiency is related to optimizing the amount of milk harvested per unit of time. This was accomplished by experimental investigation in combination with the development of a simulation model to generalize the impacts of modifying different milking management practices, at the quarter and cow level, on milking efficiency. These simulations help to develop new hypotheses and experimental designs to further improve and validate the model. The specific objectives of the dissertation were: 1) test the effects of quarter level milk flowrate switch-points (milk flowrate at which teatcups are detached) on cow milking duration, box time, milk production and SCC; 2) Explore within udder quarter milking duration differences and test the effects of quarter level milk flowrate switch-points that account for those differences, on milk production, SCC, cow milking duration and box time; 3) simulate several commonly used milk flowrate switch-points at the cow and quarter level with empirical quarter milk flowrate data and test their effect on milking duration, overmilking and strip milk; 4) develop a quarter based simulation model to estimate quarter and cow milking duration and box duration and simulate the effect of some milking management strategies (at the quarter or cow level) on quarter and cow milking duration. The results of this work showed that improvements in milking efficiency can be achieved by modifying quarter level milk flowrate switch-points without negatively impacting milk yield or udder health. We validated the results of a simulation model to estimate quarter and cow milking duration. Results from the simulations also showed that there is great potential to investigate how several grouping strategies, quarter level and cow level milking management strategies can contribute to increasing milking efficiency. This work also highlighted the need to conduct further research on the effects of incomplete milking on milk production.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of machine milking is to harvest high quality milk from cows as gently, quickly, and completely as possible. Gentleness implies that the impact on teat canal, teat tissue, and teat skin must be minimized. Milking speed can be measured in several ways including milking unit-on time of individual milking observations or parlor performance. Parlor performance indicators include the number of cows milked per hour or the amount of milk harvested per stall per hour. To optimize both measures of milking speed, the time that the teat cup is attached to the cow's teat should be kept as short as possible. The term completely describes the attempt to minimize the amount of milk that remains in the mammary gland after milking.Advancements in milking machine technologies and research enhancing our understanding of the physiological requirements of the cow over the last decades have led to optimization of the milk harvesting process. However, it is unclear which milking strategies have the potential to optimize teat tissue condition while enhancing milking performance in high-producing dairy cows with a thrice-daily milking schedule. In addition, we are lacking diagnostic techniques to reliably assess machine milking-induced changes in teat blood circulation. Such knowledge could further the understanding of how the blood circulation is affected by current machine milking practices and how they are related to the susceptibility to intramammary infection and milking performance. The objectives therefore were to (1) investigate the effect of 2 different premilking stimulation regimens on milking performance and teat tissue condition, (2) study the effect of 2 different automatic cluster remover settings on milking performance, teat tissue condition, and udder health, and (3) develop, evaluate, and employ a diagnostic technique using power Doppler ultrasonography to assess changes in teat blood flow that are associated with premilking stimulation and machine milking. Cows that were forestripped during premilking udder preparation had shorter milking unit-on time and spent less time below 1 kg/min milk flow rate to harvest the same amount of milk per milking session. The odds of machine milking-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue were lower for cows that received forestripping compared with cows that were not forestripped. Increasing the automatic cluster remover settings from 0.8 to 1.2 kg/min decreased individual milking duration and alleviated milking-machine-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue condition without adversely affecting the amount of milk harvested, milk component yields, or udder health. No meaningful differences were detected in machine-milking-induced long-term changes between treatment groups. Power Doppler ultrasonography was shown to be a suitable tool to quantify teat blood circulation in dairy cows. Teat blood flow, as assessed with power Doppler ultrasonography was associated with premilking teat stimulation and machine milking. Overall, optimization of milking routine and machine settings by means of premilking udder stimulation and modification of machine settings enhanced milking efficiency and improved teat tissue condition of dairy cows without adversely affecting their milk production or udder health indicators. Application of power Doppler ultrasonography can further our understanding of the circulatory system of dairy cows' teats including inherent circulatory regulation mechanisms and extrinsic factors such as machine milking.

Book excerpt: Worldwide, mastitis is still one of the most important diseases in the dairy sector. Being a multifactorial disease, caused by multiple pathogens, control remains a difficult issue. Mastitis not only affects the health of milk-producing animals, having consequences for the profitability of dairy farms, it also affects the animal welfare. Moreover, mastitis negatively influences the milk quality having consequences for the dairy processing industry. In other words: mastitis affects a large part of the dairy production chain. Due to ongoing scientific effort, insight in mastitis in the context of increasingly complex farming systems, is improving. This insight leads to better methods to control mastitis, either by prevention or by adequate measures (e.g. therapy) when a cow (or goat or sheep) gets mastitis. This book reflects the current knowledge from all over the world on mastitis as it was presented during the 4th IDF International Mastitis Conference, held in June 2005 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The papers of the 115 oral presentations and the 13 keynote presentations are reflecting not only the current knowledge of mastitis control but are also giving ideas for future solutions for control measures.

Book excerpt: Greater knowledge of lactation allows us to alter environmental, nutritional, and milking procedures, or general management to maximize production. This book, focusing on lactation in farm animals (biology, physiological basis, nutritional requirements, and modelization), presents invited papers from internationally recognized scientists. This volume contains seven chapters covering the key topics related to milk production and lactation biology and physiology. The authors show that animals raised on a well-controlled nutrition regimen may have significant enhancement of succeeding lactations. Furthermore, the usefulness of a milk yield prediction system depends upon how accurately it can predict daily milking patterns and its ability to adjust to factors affecting supply. Milk yield prediction models have proven helpful for genetic analysis and for bio-economic modeling. On the whole, this book serves as an inspirational basis for both scientists and farmers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of more than 20 years of experience in working with near-infrared spectroscopy for raw milk analysis. The totality of this work presents extensive possibilities for milk spectral measurements that can be carried out in dairy. Moving beyond the standard milk components such as fat, protein, or lactose, this book presents near-infrared spectroscopy as a method that can also be used in disease diagnostics. The measurements and experimental results presented here are all based on the utilization of usually neglected near-infrared regions—regions with strong absorbance of water. The author has found the water – light interaction discussed to be an immensely rich source of information, not only on milk composition but also on the physiological status of the animals involved. A special section of the book is dedicated to exploration of potential interfering factors that may influence the analysis and contribute to the robustness of the models. The research described in this book served as a basis for the development of the novel discipline aquaphotomics and is of interest to anyone working in this field.
