Book Synopsis Optimization of Bioethanol Production Using Oil Palm Frond Juice by : Lawanya K. Ramu
Download or read book Optimization of Bioethanol Production Using Oil Palm Frond Juice written by Lawanya K. Ramu and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the optimum conditions for producing bioethanol using oil palm frond juice. Bioethanol has been gaining much interest recently in terms of research and development. Since there are various factors such as rising oil price, environmental issues and high rate consumption of fossil fuel, the global demand for bioethanol has shown a remarkable increase. Oil palm frond is known to be the most generated oil palm biomass annually. OPF is obtained during pruning for harvesting fresh fruit bunch, and the juice can be produced by pressing the fresh OPF using the conventional sugarcane pressing machine. The OPF juice contains higher glucose content, which is about 70% of the total free sugar. Hence, it has a high potential to be the carbon source for producing bioethanol. The parameters investigated in this research work are temperature, pH and agitation speed. Bioethanol was produced from oil palm frond juice by fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The ethanol concentration from the fermentation sample was analysed using HPLC. Using the ethanol concentration obtained from HPLC analysis, the optimum condition for the production of bioethanol was determined using the Response Surface Methodology with the aid of Design Expert software. The results revealed that, a maximum bioethanol concentration of 22.93 g/L can be obtained at the following optimum conditions : temperature of 32oC, pH 6 and agitation speed of 80 rpm. The validation result revealed that at this optimum condition, a bioethanol yield of 30.1% , which is close to the predicted value, can be obtained.

Book Synopsis Kinetic Modeling of 1-G Ethanol Fermentations by : Samuel C. Oliveira
Download or read book Kinetic Modeling of 1-G Ethanol Fermentations written by Samuel C. Oliveira and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most recent rise in demand for bioethanol, due mainly to economic and environmental issues, has required highly productive and efficient processes. In this sense, mathematical models play an important role in the design, optimization, and control of bioreactors for ethanol production. Such bioreactors are generally modeled by a set of first-order ordinary differential equations, which are derived from mass and energy balances over bioreactors. Complementary equations have also been included to describe fermentation kinetics, based on Monod equation with additional terms accounting for inhibition effects linked to the substrate, products, and biomass. In this chapter, a reasonable number of unstructured kinetic models of 1-G ethanol fermentations have been compiled and reviewed. Segregated models, as regards the physiological state of the biomass (cell viability), have also been reviewed, and it was found that some of the analyzed kinetic models are also applied to the modeling of second-generation ethanol production processes.

Download or read book Modelling of Kinetics of Saccharification and Fermentation in the Ethanol Production Process Using Parameter Estimation Techniques written by Silpa Kamatam and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuous demand for petroleum resources and the constant increase of the effects of greenhouse gases has widened the opportunities to produce fuel from alternative sources. Ethanol, also called as bioethanol, is a renewable fuel that is produced from biomass has a capability of contributing to a cleaner environment. Presently, ethanol is produced from crops (such as corn and sugarcane) and cellulosic (wood, paper, corn stover, trees) raw materials. The production of ethanol is not a simple process when considering the biological aspects. Research has been going on to upgrade the determination of reaction time for the conversion of carbohydrate to ethanol by adding details from the experiments or theory to the predicted kinetic models. This work focuses on the exploration of a less-detailed kinetic model based on actual NCERC pilot plant data. The parameters of this model were extracted from the NCERC data using parameter estimation. It also concentrates on how much error was obtained when a model is developed from a somewhat less-detailed parameter estimation based model of the pilot plant data. Two model cases were developed viz., Case 1 - Fermentation and SSF model, where the kinetic parameters of fermentation were solved and introduced into the SSF as constants to determine the saccharification constants, and Case 2 - Combined SSF model, where all the parameters for both the fermentation and saccharification were estimated together. MATLAB was used for parameter estimation. The rate equations for the saccharification and fermentation models were based on the Michealis-Menten and Monod kinetics. The introduction of a product inhibition factor in to the rate equations seemed to minimize the error to give a better fit. It was observed that Case 2 provided good results even though a large number of parameters were estimated. This implies that trying to fit fermentation data to the SSF process, artificially, would lead to less accurate predictions than estimation of fermentation and saccharification.

The usages of fossil fuels tend to emit the greenhouse gases that effect to global warming as well human health. To overcome these problems, the bioethanol introduced by the researches to substitute the fossil fuels. Bioethanol is a bioenergy produced by yeast fermentation at several conditions compared to conventional fossil fuels. Bioethanol is being studied because the unique properties and renewable fuels. The production of bioethanol in industrial scale involved high cost due to the usage of foods as sugar raw materials. Thus, this research is to evaluate the oil palm frond (OPF) juice as raw material for bioethanol fermentation. In this study, the bioethanol produces in shake flask by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and OPF juice as medium component. Three parameters study are initial pH of medium, agitation speed, and OPF juice concentration. The best condition of parameters determine by the highest ethanol concentration produce. Inoculum prepared in shake flask to cultivate the yeast in medium growth and ferment in 250 ml shake flasks containing medium growth and beef extract. The flasks incubate in 48 hours, 12 hours interval for sample withdraw. The products analyse for sugar concentration and bioethanol concentration. The expected results for the best condition in bioethanol fermentation are in pH 7, 150 rpm agitation speed and 100% volume percentage of OPF juice concentration.
