Book excerpt: Conceptual aircraft sizing is the first step in the development project of a passenger transport aircraft. Classically, in this phase, a lot of aircraft configurations are compared after having been globally sized thanks to a deterministic, multidisciplinary and constrained optimisation problem. The purpose is to determine the main characteristics of the airplane according to a set of Top Level Requirements. At preliminary stage, designers have to deal with limited knowledge and high uncertainty when solving this problem. Managing that uncertainty is a major issue: assessing its impact on the design in the early stage allows to save time and cost. This PhD thesis introduces a new methodology to solve the aircraft design optimisation affected by uncertainty. First of all, the main source of uncertainty involved at this stage is identified as predictive model uncertainty, which is part of epistemic uncertainty. This uncertainty is quantified within a probabilistic framework. For that purpose, based on the Beta distribution, we create a new generic distribution function able to assume a wide range of distribution shapes: it is called Beta-Mystique distribution. Second of all, we realise uncertainty propagation studies with Monte Carlo and moment propagation methods, in order to analyse the robustness of aircraft configuration according to a set of uncertainties. Finally, a chance constrained optimisation is solved to produce a robust aircraft configuration. Two strategies are considered: the use of Surrogate models to approximate the probabilities and the resolution of the optimisation problem thanks to the moment propagation method.

Le terme « optimisation multi-disciplinaire » laisse sous-entendre à tort qu'il ne s'agit que d'un problème d'optimisation. Nous lui préférons ici le terme de « conception collaborative ». En effet, l'optimisation ne représente qu'un aspect, qui ne peut être séparée du reste du problème de conception. Le but n'est pas de créer un processus automatique, mais de faciliter les échanges entre les équipes des différentes disciplines. De nombreuses méthodes, appelées communément formulations MDO (de Multi-Disciplinary Optimization), apparaissent dans la littérature (MDF, IDF, AAO, BLISS, CO). Elles proposent des stratégies permettant, d'une part, d'assurer la cohérence de la description du système complexe et, d'autre part, d'effectuer la recherche de la configuration optimale. Dans un premier temps, nous dressons un état de l'art des formulations MDO. Nous mettons en avant leurs points communs et leurs différences, afin de proposer une implémentation de la manière la plus générale qui soit. Nous proposons, avec la méthode DIVE (Discipline Interaction Variable Elimination), un cadre d'utilisation de méta-modèles au sein des formulations MDO. Le méta-modèle peut se limiter à une approximation linéaire ou quadratique. Il peut s'appuyer sur des méthodes classiques d'apprentissage, telles que les réseaux neuronaux, le Krigeage ou la SVM. Chaque méta-modèle est accompagné d'une région de confiance qui en détermine la validité. Cette approche par approximations locales et successives permet d'aborder les problèmes de grande dimension. Nous présentons des résultats obtenus avec deux cas-tests d'avions d'affaires supersoniques obtenus sous deux environnements différents (Scilab et ModelCenter).

Motivated by an impulse that, as he himself says, ‘was civic rather than political’, nothing seemed more important to him than to understand the Algerian situation and provide the elements that would enable others to come to an informed judgement about it.
