Book excerpt: The general problem of finding optimal policies for operating queuing systems is investigated in order to determine when to open or close servers so as to minimize cost. The queue size is observed at equally spaced intervals of time and the structure of the optimal policy is determined. The main restriction made, at first, is to limit the model to a single server system. Justification for a form of an optimal policy is given. Then the proofs that this policy is in fact optimal for the finite horizon, and averaging cost criterion are given. Also, conditions for determining that the server should never be closed with customers in queue are presented. The problem is then generalized to allow for a fixed number of servers. (Author).

From and abstract point of view, point process is a simple version of random measure; these processes have acquired importance mainly due their viability in modeling a variety of phenomena spanning physical, biological, economic and engineering sciences. This volume with contributions from leading probabilists contains, besides surveys on the state-of-art of the theory, papers dealing with problems of queues, inventory, reliability and population evolution. There are also papers dealing with practical aspects like statistical inference and nonlinear filtering. The book will be of interest to a wide spectrum of people including those working in the area of operations research, signal processing, electrical communications & control and neural network.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the work is twofold. First, it provides an introduction into fundamental structural and behavioral aspects of periodic review inventory systems. Second, it includes a comprehensive study on analytical and optimization aspects of a specific class of those systems. For the latter purpose, general solution methods for problems of inventory management in discrete time are described and developed along with highly specialized methods to solve very specific problems related to the model variants examined. The work is thus addressed to students and practitioners who seek a deeper understanding of managing inventories in discrete time as well as to software developers who require implementation aids on specific problems of inventory management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a modeling framework to analyze the problem of inventory management with alternative delivery times. The general context considered here is that a seller replenishes its inventory in fixed intervals and, between replenishments, allocates the limited inventory to satisfy customers who are both price and delivery-time sensitive. On the demand side, customers have heterogeneous delivery-time requirements and choose either spot or late delivery. This theoretical modeling captures the essence of real-world business practices such as the delivery time market segmentation strategy adopted by automobile dealerships in China and many other similar examples. The book focuses on the seller’s optimal inventory replenishment and demand fulfillment policies, and our results provide managerial insights into the merits of flexible delivery-time options. Similar applications such as the group-buying mechanism are also examined. The main mathematical tool used in theoretical analysis is dynamic programming. This book is written for students, researchers, and practitioners in the areas of operations management and industrial engineering who are interested in understanding the rationale of flexible delivery times and designing successful applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on queueing models and their publication in professional journals and textbooks have been sparse over the past eleven decades. Collections of some of these studies have appeared either as single volumes or just chapters of single volumes and/or monographs. This book is an attempt to present some queuing models, especially those applicable in business and industry, in a style between a monograph and a textbook. Also the need of researchers and practitioners for a handbook-type text and the current lack of it explain the need for a book of this kind. Most of the basic terminologies and concepts that appear throughout the text are introduced in a systematic way in the first two chapters; nevertheless, previous exposition to a first course in probability and statistics is advised for later chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsible Manufacturing has become an obligation to the environment and to society itself, enforced primarily by customer perspective and governmental regulations on environmental issues. This is mainly driven by the escalating deterioration of the environment, such as diminishing raw material resources, overflowing waste sites, and increasing levels of pollution. Responsible Manufacturing related issues have found a large following in industry and academia, which aim to find solutions to the problems that arise in this newly emerged research area. Problems are widespread, including the ones related to the lifecycle of products, disassembly, material recovery, remanufacturing, and pollution prevention. Organized into sixteen chapters, this book provides a foundation for academicians and practitioners, and addresses several important issues faced by strategic, tactical, and operation planners of Responsible Manufacturing. Using efficient models in a variety of decision-making situations, it provides easy-to-use mathematical and/or simulation modeling-based solution methodologies for the majority of the issues. Features Addresses a variety of state-of-the-art issues in Responsible Manufacturing Highlights how popular industrial engineering and operations research techniques can be effectively exploited to find the most effective solutions to problems Presents how a specific issue can be approached or modeled in a given decision-making situation Covers strategic, tactical, and operational systems issues Provides a foundation for academicians and practitioners interested in building bodies of knowledge in this new and fast-growing area

Jinhua Cao is one of the most famous reliability theorists. His main contributions include: published over 100 influential scientific papers; published an interesting reliability book in Chinese in 1986, which has greatly influenced the reliability of education, academic research and engineering applications in China; initiated and organized Reliability Professional Society of China (the first part of Operations Research Society of China) since 1981. The high admiration that Professor Cao enjoys in the reliability community all over the world was witnessed by the enthusiastic response of each contributor in this book. The contributors are leading researchers with diverse research perspectives. The research areas of the book iclude a broad range of topics related to reliability models, queueing theory, manufacturing systems, supply chain finance, risk management, Markov decision processes, blockchain and so forth. The book consists of a brief Preface describing the main achievements of Professor Cao; followed by congratulations from Professors Way Kuo and Wei Wayne Li, and by Operations Research Society of China, and Reliability Professional Society of China; and further followed by 25 articles roughly grouped together. Most of the articles are written in a style understandable to a wide audience. This book is useful to anyone interested in recent developments in reliability, network security, system safety, and their stochastic modeling and analysis.
