Book excerpt: "With the increasing penetration of renewable energy and other distributed energy resource (DER) systems in distribution networks, the concept of community microgrids has become a desirable option for power system planners. Community microgrids can operate either connected with the centralized grid or isolated, with the benefit of maintaining supply during main grid disturbances, as well as allowing coordinated local control of DERs with and without the support of the main grid. Some components, which are more and more employed in the microgrids such as combined heat and power (CHP) units and electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS), also need to be considered in the planning and operation stages of microgrids, especially the impact of fast charging facilities (FCF) in the community, which entails significant demand fluctuations and high demand peaks. In this thesis, components of a typical community microgrid are modeled. An optimal microgrid asset planning approach is introduced and validated on different scenarios, and parameters whose fluctuation may affect the costs are explored in sensitivity analysis. The input data especially the electrical load data are analyzed, and EVCSs are integrated into microgrid planning processes. As an efficient way to improve energy utilization, demand response is considered in the grid-connected mode of the community microgrid. The work further investigates microgrid economic dispatch based on a decision tree regressor. The decision tree is prevented from overfitting by post pruning, and the multi-output decision tree is used to improve the overall outcome in terms of operational cost performance"--

Book excerpt: Access to electricity is a key factor behind development and expansion of modern societies, and electric power systems are the backbone infrastructure for economic growth of nations and communities. However, more than a billion people all over the world have no or limited access to electricity and are deprived of basic services. Furthermore, there are many communities that rely on small-scale isolated microgrids to supply their electric power demands, and many challenges exist in keeping those microgrids operating. The cost of operating isolated microgrids is a major issue which impacts the availability of a proper power network in remote communities. Hence, many organizations, communities and governments around the world are looking into alternative options for electrification of remote communities by considering Renewable Energy (RE) resources, such as wind and solar power, and utilization of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). This thesis investigates the feasibility of RE deployment in remote communities, by proposing a generalized optimal planning platform and conducting comprehensive simulation studies based on real measured data, and evaluates the impact of economic, technical and operation constraints on the planning of an isolated microgrid involving conventional generation, RE resources and ESS. This work suggests that further investigation should be made on the potential impacts of the integration of RE resource on systems operation constraints, such as frequency and voltage regulation, and the results justify the importance of such investigations. Detailed studies on the impact of operation constraints on the planning and sizing of the microgrid are performed. The impact of ESS on planning studies and its potential role in system operation are analyzed. Furthermore, the impact of RE integration on reduction of diesel generation and thus carbon footprint in remote communities is evaluated. The inclusion of a demand response management strategy in microgrid planning problem is considered and its impact on the integration of RE and ESS in remote communities is analyzed. The proposed planning platform is applied to the microgrid of Kasabonika Lake First Nation (KLFN), a northern Ontario remote community. The results indicate that RE and ESS integration projects are achievable considering alternative incentives and funding resources. It is also shown that frequency regulation constraints have remarkable impact on the sizing of the RE units and ESS. A sensitivity analysis is also performed in order to study the effect of variable parameters on the optimal design of the microgrid at KLFN.

Book excerpt: Energy Management System (EMS) applications of modern power networks like microgrids have to respond to a number of stringent challenges due to current energy revolution. Optimal resource dispatch tasks must be handled with specific regard to the addition of new resource types and the adoption of novel modeling considerations. In addition, due to the comprehensive changes concerning the multi cell grid structure, new policies should be fulfilled via microgrids’ EMS. At the same time achieving a variety of conflicting goals in different microgrids requires a universal and a multi criteria optimization tool. In this work two dispatch-optimizers based on genetic algorithm and mixed integer linear programming for a centralized EMS are introduced which can schedule the unit commitment and economic dispatch of microgrid units. In the proposed methods, different network restrictions like voltages and equipment loadings and unit constraints have been considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a technique for optimal planning and design of hybrid renewable energy systems for microgrid applications. The Distributed Energy Resources Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM) is used to determine the optimal size and type of distributed energy resources (DERs) and their operating schedules for a sample utility distribution system. Using the DER-CAM results, an evaluation is performed to evaluate the electrical performance of the distribution circuit if the DERs selected by the DER-CAM optimization analyses are incorporated. Results of analyses regarding the economic benefits of utilizing the optimal locations identified for the selected DER within the system are also presented. The actual Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) campus electrical network is used as an example to show the effectiveness of this approach. The results show that these technical and economic analyses of hybrid renewable energy systems are essential for the efficient utilization of renewable energy resources for microgird applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With an increased focus on reliability and a desire to reduce environmental impacts, power system planners are exploring the advantages of distributed energy resources (DERs) to compliment the central grid. Emerging technologies are making it possible to deploy advanced microgrids capable of integrating multiple DERs into the power system, and can operate either in isolation or parallel to the grid. Microgrids can also aid in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the improvement of local system reliability and efficiency, as well as the management and control of power generation. Nevertheless, successful implementation and deployment of microgrids will require advance planning strategies that seek to best balance its operational and financial benefits. This thesis proposes a bi-level formulation for a realistic sequential planning and operation problem of an advanced microgrid. The proposed model recast as a mathematical programming with equilibrium constraints (MPEC), jointly determines the optimal configuration of a microgrid while optimizing the outputs of its installed energy resources through the implementation of an energy management system. The coupled formulation characterizes an hierarchical decision making process where a microgrid planner or designer and a proxy operator solving an economic dispatch problem independently control a set of variables at each level of the model. The work further analyzes available investment options for microgrid implementation and uses capital budgeting techniques to determine the return on investment to potential microgrid stakeholders. Within the same context of bi-level modeling, the proposed model is modified and extended to characterize the interaction between a microgrid planner and a distribution systems operator (DSO). The modified model is developed within the context of a new DSO paradigm. Given that microgrid implementation and operation are mainly justified by the benefits accrued to microgrid stakeholders, the unified modeling language is utilized in the thesis to allocate discovered benefits and identify corresponding stakeholders to whom they may apply. The aim of the thesis work is to transform the proposed model into a techno-economic tool that can be used for planning and evaluation of microgrid implementation, and capable of estimating benefits of deploying advanced microgrids. Application of the proposed work to develop business cases for practical microgrids (remote, commercial and industrial) are also discussed. Results obtained through these applications are verified using DER-CAM (a commercially accepted microgrid planning software package). " --
