Book excerpt: This Master Thesis propose to find the best heuristic solution for one of the types of Assembly Line Balancing Problem, the SALP-1, in a line that needs to produce different models of the same product (mixed-model). That objective was tried to achieve by adapting some of the best algorithms for simple lines (Boctor, Helgeson & Birnie and Bedworth & Bailey) to solve that mixed-models. To solve the problem it will be probe some rules or make some changes in the problem in order to apply those algorithms. At least the objective is to study with what algorithm and whit which changes in the problem we obtain the better results.

Book excerpt: With the rapid growth of technology in society, communication networks have become a heavily researched topic. Implementing these advanced systems is a challenge, however, due to the abundance of optimization problems within these networks. The use of meta-heuristic algorithms and nature-inspired computing has become a prevalent technique among researchers for solving these complex problems within communication networks. Despite its popularity, this specific computing technique lacks the appropriate amount of research that is needed for professionals to grasp a definite understanding. Nature-Inspired Computing Applications in Advanced Communication Networks is a collection of innovative research on the methods and applications of natural computation techniques and algorithms within communication systems such as wireless sensor networks, vehicular adhoc networks, and internet of things. While highlighting topics including mobile sensor deployment, routing optimization, and sleep scheduling, this book is ideally designed for researchers, network professionals, computer scientists, mathematicians, developers, scholars, educators, and students seeking to enhance their understanding of nature-inspired computing and its solutions within various advanced communication networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with two main decision problems which arise when flow-line production systems are installed and operated. The assembly line balancing problem consists of partitioning the work, necessary to assemble the product(s), among different stations of an assembly line. If several models of a product are jointly processed on a line, this medium-term problem is connected with the short-term problem of determining an operating sequence of the models. In Part I balancing and sequencing problems are discussed, classified, and arranged within a hierarchical planning system. In the present second edition special emphasis is given to u-shaped assembly lines which are important components of modern just-in-time production systems. Part II is concerned with exact and heuristic procedures for solving those decision problems. For each problem type considered, a survey of existing procedures is given and new efficient solution methods are developed. Comprehensive numerical investigations showing the effectiveness of the new methods and their superiority over existing approaches are reported.

Book excerpt: In this study, we consider single model deterministic Assembly Line Balancing problem with task paralleling. The objective is to minimize the total cost which is composed of station opening cost and task dependent equipment cost. A branch and bound algorithm that allows two-level task paralleling is proposed. A heuristic algorithm is also developed both for obtaining efficient upper bounds to branch and bound and for achieving good approximate solutions for large sized problems. Computational experiments are conducted to investigate the effects of experimental parameters on the cost-related and algorithm-related performance measures. The exact algorithm results are compared to the proposed heuristic algorithm results, station paralleling results and optimal solutions without paralleling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficient assembly line design is a problem of considerable industrial importance. Unfortunately, like many other design processes, it can be time-consuming and repetitive. In addition to this, assembly line design is often complex owing to the number of multiple components involved: line efficiency, cost, reliability and space for example. The main objective is to integrate the design with operations issues, thereby minimising its costs. Since it is impossible to replace a designer’s intelligence, experience and creativity, it is important to provide him with a set of assistance tools in order to meet the conflicting objectives involved. Assembly Line Design presents three techniques based on the Grouping Genetic Algorithm (a powerful and broadly applicable optimisation and stochastic search technique) which can be used to aid efficient assembly line design: • ‘equal piles for assembly lines’, a new algorithm introduced to deal with assembly line balancing (balancing stations’ loads); • a new method based on a multiple objective grouping genetic algorithm (MO-GGA) aiming to deal with resource planning (selection of equipment to carry out assembly tasks); ‘• balance for operation’ (BFO), introduced to deal with the changes during the operation phase of assembly lines. Assembly Line Design will be of interest to technical personnel working in design, planning and production departments in industry as well as managers in industry who want to learn more about concurrent engineering. This book will also be of value to researchers and postgraduate students in mechanical, manufacturing or micro-engineering. Book excerpt: Assembly lines are productive systems, which are very efficient for homogeneous products. In the automotive industry, an assembly line is used in the production of several vehicle variants, including numerous configurations, options, and add-ins. As a result, assembly lines must be at the same time specialized to provide high efficiency, but also flexible to allow the mass customization of the vehicles. In this book, the planning of assembly lines for uncertain demand is tackled and optimization algorithms are offered for the balancing of such lines. Building an assembly line is a commitment of several months or even years, it is understandable that the demand will fluctuate during the lifetime of an assembly line. New products are developed, others are removed from the market, and the decision of the final customer plays a role on the immediate demand. Therefore, the variation and uncertainty of the demand must be accounted for in an assembly line. In this book, methods dealing with random demand or random production sequence are presented, so that the practitioners can plan more robust and efficient production systems.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The single-model assembly line is not efficient for today's competitive industry because to respond the customer's expectation, companies need to produce mixed-model products. On the other hand, using the mixed-model products increases the assembly complexity and makes it difficult to assign tasks to workstations because of the variety in model characteristics. As a result, the mixed-model products suffer from delays, limitations in the line workflow and longer lines. Parallel assembly lines as a production system in ALBPs which consists of a number of assembly lines in a parallel status, which by considering the cycle time of each line certain products are manufactured. This thesis takes advantages of the parallel assembly lines to produce mixed-model in order to assemble more than one model in each parallel assembly line and allocating tasks of models to workstations and balancing each parallel line to reduce the cycle times. To solve these problems, two heuristic algorithms were developed and coded in MATLAB®. The first one allocates each model to only one parallel assembly line and achieves the initial arrangement of tasks with the minimum number of workstations for each line. The second one called Tabu search Mixed-Model Parallel Assembly Line Balancing (TMMPALB), calculates final balancing tasks of different model in parallel lines with optimum cycle time for each line which tasks of each model can be allocated to more than one parallel assembly line through the TMMPALB. The main advantages of employing TS are using a flexible memory structure during the search process, and intensification and diversification strategies, which help to make a comprehensive search in the solution space. Fourteen data sets create 81 test problems that were solved to validate the performance of the TMMPALB. Each test problem consisted of the number of tasks, process time for each task (time unit), and the precedence relationship, minimum number of station and cycle time for each model. By considering that 80 out of the 81 test problems include three models and the remaining one has four models, 244 cycle times is made, which TMMPALB tries to minimize. The computational results showed that 205 cycle times out of the 244 cycle times have been improved. These results demonstrated that by arranging mixed-model through the parallel assembly lines with minimum number of workstations, the minimum cycle times are achieved in comparing with the single line.
