Book excerpt: Ultra WideBand (UWB) over fiber is a promising technology for meeting the demands of future wireless local-area networks (WLANs) and wireless personal-area networks (WPANs). Thanks to the enormous bandwidth and fiber characteristics, a high communication quality may be established at long reach. UWB wireless propagation must be achieved with special power and spectral constraints fixed by the regulatory bodies (e.g. US Federal Communication Commission). The novelty of our work originates from exploiting the benefits of a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) so as to get a reach extension at limited cost and complexity. However, the inherent nonlinear effects and Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) noise associated to such device may affect the system performance.Overcoming these impairments has been of central importance in this study. SOA nonlinearities have been mitigated by applying analog pre-distortion in electrical domain. Phaser-based processing was also proposed to simultaneously reduce ASE influence and linearize SOA characteristics, thanks to up/down chirping performed on the transmitter/receiver sides. With Impulse Radio UWB transmission, due to the time properties of modulation patterns, discrete lines arise in the corresponding spectrum, which may violate FCC limit or reduce the power efficiency. A new shape randomization technique has been investigated, which proved to be effective in suppressing these spectral spikes. The three approaches have shown a great potential with On Off Keying and Pulse Position Modulation formats at long optical reach. The performance of Differential Chaos Shift Keying was finally examined in the over fiber system, a lower error probability was experimentally achieved in comparison with other non-coherent modulations.

Book excerpt: The content of this book is the result of the work and the experiences of an interdisciplinary and strictly European group of researchers who have attempted to give birth to a new fibre communication network concept by exploiting the potential benefits of optical coherent transmission. The run towards this ambitious goal started in 1985 on the basis of the ESPRIT program incentives by an "ad hoc" consortium of industrial partners and research institutions. The first three years were dedicated to a feasibility study carried out by a reduced number of "pioneers". In 1989 the team was extended to eleven partners. There was already clear evidence of the increasing interest in Europe in exploring the actual limits of optical fibre coherent systems; the project had innovative and very advanced features that were gradually refined by incorporating the latest technological developments to which it has directly contributed. The main objective of the project targeted the development of the necessary building blocks to show experimentally the performance and the flexibility built into the proposed concept of multi-channel ultra-wideband network. The system concept developed within this project associates optical frequency division multiplexing with a suitable network architecture and management techniques to allow very high flexibility and efficiency in handling simultaneous transmission over the network (on each optical frequency) of multiple virtual channels each operating with a wide range of information rates ranging from a fraction of a Mb/s up to a maximum value in excess of 160 Mb/s.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of MB-OFDM UWB over fiber transmission system is investigated considering optical modulation and demodulation impact. Theoretical analysis of the effect of fiber dispersion, optical transmitter and optical receiver response on system performance is carried out considering amplitude and phase distortion. Experiments are conducted and verified by our theoretical analysis and good agreement is obtained. It is found that RF modulation index of ∼4% is optimum for optical transmitter with Mach-Zehnder modulator, and optical receiver with Chebyshev-II response is the best for MB-OFDM UWB over fiber. It is also found that high received optical power is required for transmission of MB-OFDM UWB signal over fiber. Theoretical analysis of the effect of fiber chromatic dispersion induced laser phase to intensity noise or relative intensity noise (RIN) on system performance is carried out. Experiments are also conducted to verify our theoretical analysis. Simulation is also carried out to show the relationship between RIN and center frequency of UWB bands. It is found that the parameters like laser output power, laser linewidth and fiber dispersion that control RIN, will critically affect the overall performance of a UWB over fiber system. The performance of MB-OFDM UWB over fiber transmission system is also studied considering the effect of in-band jammers such as WiMAX, WLAN MIMO, WLAN and marine radar. Experiments were performed to show the effect of fiber transmission under various interferer power levels. It is found that in-band interferers can cause severe degradation in system performance if certain interferer to UWB peak power ratio is not maintained.

This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next generation optical communication systems will have to transport a significantly increased data volume at a reduced cost per transmitted bit. To achieve these ambitious goals optimum design is crucial in combination with dynamic adaptation to actual traffic demands and improved energy efficiency. In the first part of the book the author elaborates on the design of optical transmission systems. Several methods for efficient numerical simulation are presented ranging from meta-model based optimization to parallelization techniques for solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Furthermore, fast analytical and semi-analytical models are described to estimate the various degradation effects occurring on the transmission line. In the second part of the book operational aspects of optical networks are investigated. Physical layer impairment-aware routing and regenerator placement are studied. Finally, it is analyzed how the energy efficiency of a multi-layer optical core network can be increased by dynamic adaptation to traffic patterns changing in the course of the day.
