Book excerpt: The book introduces optical wave propagation in the irregular turbulent atmosphere and the relations to laser beam and LIDAR applications for both optical communication and imaging. It examines atmosphere fundamentals, structure, and content. It explains specific situations occurring in the irregular atmosphere and for specific natural phenomena that affect optical ray and laser beam propagation. It emphasizes how to use LIDAR to investigate atmospheric phenomena and predict primary parameters of the irregular turbulent atmosphere and suggests what kinds of optical devices to operate in different atmospheric situations to minimize the deleterious effects of natural atmospheric phenomena.

Book excerpt: The pertinent theoretical background and the results of a group of experiments conducted over 0.4- and 1.17-km near-ground horizontal ranges are presented. (1) The log-amplitude variances for HeNe (0.633 μm) and CO2 (10.6 μm) laser beams were found to have a ratio of 26.8, which is in close agreement with the predictions of Rytov-based spherical-wave theory. (2) Published measurements of the saturation level of the log-amplitude variance are reviewed and several inconsistencies noted. (3) The spatial correlation function of irradiance field was measured and found to agree with theory. The degree of correlation between different frequency beams which had traversed the same optical path was also measured and compared to theory. The data exhibited an unacceptably large scatter and did not show the wavelength dependence. (4) The log-normal, Rayleigh, and Rice probability distributions are discussed in terms of their applicability to irradiance statistics. Relatively weak 10.6 μm irradiance fluctuations were found to be equally well described by the log-normal and Rice distributions; strong fluctuations obtained at 0.488 μm were clearly best described by the log-normal distribution.

Book excerpt: This report is a tutorial on the effects of atmospheric turbulence upon systems which rely upon the propagation of LASER beams. In addition to providing a simplified presentation of turbulence theory and optical effects, it describes the state of the art of the new technique of radiosonde estimation of index of refraction fluctuations. Suggestions are given for future research which will help to answer current Air Force needs. The feasibility of some laser systems will depend upon the value of r0, the coherence length (which is related to “C2n” which in turn is related to the degree of turbulence). At present, the statistics of “r0” are inadequate.

Book excerpt: The authors have calculated the frequency spectrum of plane waves and beams propagating in a moving turbulent atmosphere. Both the case when the atmosphere moves with a constant wind and the case when the wind velocity is distributed according to a gaussian centered about some average velocity is considered. The results indicate that for small propagation distances, the frequency spectrum behaves as omega sup -8/3 for large frequency, omega; for large propagation distances, the spectrum is broadened with increasing distance-with the broadening dependent upon the beam parameters and the wind velocity. Book excerpt: Due to the wide application of adaptive optical systems, an understanding of optical wave propagation in randomly inhomogeneous media has become essential, and several numerical models of individual AOS components and of efficient correction algorithms have been developed. This monograph contains detailed descriptions of the mathematical experiments that were designed and carried out during more than a decade's worth of research.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of an overall study of phenomena that affect the performance of optical or infrared reconnaissance and guidance equipment, the present work shows that the most commonly used expression for the mutual coherence function for an optical wave propagating in a turbulent atmosphere is, in general, incorrect. This expression is based on an unphysical extrapolation of the Kolomogorov spectrum. In modifying the spectrum, however, the corrections to the coherence function, the implied resolution, spreading of a finite beam, and the signal-to-noise ratio using heterodyne detection, can be considerable. Approximate expressions for the coherence function, valid over three distinct propagation distance regimes, are derived. The field is shown to have a greater transverse coherence length than that predicted by other researchers, the difference being more pronounced at shorter ranges. Thus, under many conditions, the performance degradation of devices that depend on the above properties is less than previously reported. (Author).

Book excerpt: This monograph describes the phenomena associated with the propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic waves through atmospheric turbulence. Geared toward specialists in radiophysics and atmospheric acoustics and optics, the treatment is also suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. The author stresses applications to phase and amplitude fluctuations, scintillation of stars, radio scattering, and other problems. Part I covers topics from the theory of random fields and turbulence theory, including statistical description. Part II, on the scattering of waves in the turbulent atmosphere, is supplemented by an appendix on scattering of acoustic radiation. Part III offers a detailed presentation of line-of-sight propagation of acoustic and electromagnetic waves through a turbulent medium. Part IV concludes the text with a comparison of theory with experimental data

Book excerpt: The present work shows that the most commonly used expression for the mutual coherence function (MCF) for an optical wave propagating in a turbulent atmosphere is, in general, incorrect. This expression is based on an unphysical extrapolation of the Kolmogorov spectrum. Along an atmospheric path, with specified turbulence parameters, the new MCF is shown to imply greater resolution, less beam spreading, and greater heterodyne signal-to-noise ratios than indicated by previous calculations. By comparing these results with those previously obtained for heterodyne detection, the percentage errors in the previous calculations are shown to increase with decreasing propagation paths. In particular, where it was formerly thought that the atmosphere limited the effective coherent detection size in heterodyne detection at all ranges, the present calculation reveals that over sufficiently short paths, there is no size limit imposed by the atmosphere. Also new to this edition are models for the scintillation index under moderate-to-strong irradiance fluctuations; models for aperture averaging based on ABCD ray matrices; beam wander and its effects on scintillation; theory of partial coherence of the source; models of rough targets for ladar applications; phase fluctuations; analysis of other beam shapes; plus expanded analysis of free-space optical communication systems and imaging systems.
