Book excerpt: Electron Beam diagnostics based on imaging techniques using Cherenkov conversion screens and intensified video cameras should be adaptable to the developing high-energy free-electron lasers (FEL) driven by radio frequency powered linear accelerators. The high beam energies (60-150 MeV) and the peak currents (100s of amps) anticipated should also make optical transition radiation intensities sufficient for these techniques. The distinctive features of the two light generation mechanisms will be summarized and a few diagnostic examples will be cited.

The effects of variations in electron energy and beam divergence and on material properties such as dielectric permittivities and the resultant coherence length upon the angular distribution and polarization of optical transition radiation has been investigated. A surprising observation important to the use of optical transition radiation as a diagnostic tool for high energy electron beams is the behavior of the perpendicular component of the intensity. In contrast to low energies where the parallel component dominates, at electron energies above 200 MeV, the perpendicular component dominates. This requires the use of a polarization filter to diagnose particle beam properties at high energies. Keywords: Theses, Transition radiation, Particle beams, Coherent transition radiation, Two foil interferometer, Beam diagnostics. (JHD).

Book excerpt: Traditionally, thin metal foils are employed for optical transition radiation (OTR) beam diagnostics but the possibility of shorting accelerator insulating surfaces and modifying accelerating fields are concerns. The successful utilization of dielectric foils in place of metal ones could alleviate these issues but necessitates more understanding of the OTR data for inferring desired beam parameters because of the dielectric's finite permittivity. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the relevant foil parameters due to beam heating should be accounted for. Here, we present and discuss sample synthetic diagnostic results of Kapton OTR spot-size measurements from the Flash X-Ray (FXR) accelerator which studies these and sightline effects. These simulations show that in some cases, the observed spot-sizes and radii are noticeably larger than the beam radii.

Book excerpt: Charged particle accelerators, such as the ones that power Free Electron Lasers (FEL), require high quality (low emittance) beams for efficient operation. Accurate and reliable beam diagnostics are essential to monitoring beam parameters in order to maintain a high quality beam. Optical Transition Radiation Interferometry (OTRI) has shown potential to be a quality diagnostic that is especially useful for high brightness electron beams such as Jefferson Labs FEL energy recovery linac. The purpose of this project is to further develop OTRI beam diagnostic techniques. An optical system was designed to make beam size and divergence measurements as well as to prepare for experiments in optical phase space mapping. Beam size and beam divergence measurements were taken to calculate the emittance of the Jefferson Lab FEL. OTRI is also used to separate core and halo beam divergences in order to estimate core and halo emittance separately.

The experimental setup developed here demonstrates the capability to observe and measure OTR due to an electron beam from a linear accelerator. The setup is compact, simple, and readily adapted to experimental work. Through the use of two software programs (QuickCapture and Image 1.14) and the QuickCapture frame grabber board, both qualitative and quantitative results are possible. One of the useful qualitative results is a three-dimensional beam profile, which is quickly produced from a captured image. The system measured the relative intensity with a 3% variation between several images of the same source. Angular measurements of OTR can be made with an angular resolution of 600 microradians. Book excerpt: DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevSTAB.11.082801 High brightness electron accelerators, such as energy recovery linacs (ERL), often have complex particle distributions that can create difficulties in beam transport as well as matching to devices such as wigglers used to generate radiation from the beam. Optical transition radiation (OTR), OTR interferometry (OTRI) and optical diffraction-transition radiation interferometry (ODTRI) have proven to be effective tools for diagnosing both the spatial and angular distributions of charged particle beams. OTRI and ODTRI have been used to measure rms divergences and optical transverse phase space mapping has been demonstrated using OTRI. In this work we present the results of diagnostic experiments using OTR and ODR conducted at the Jefferson Laboratory 115 MeV ERL which show the presence of two separate components within the spatial and angular distributions of the beam. By assuming a correlation between the spatial and angular fe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of optical diffraction radiation (ODR) as a diagnostic tool has increased in recent years. The potential of this technique has been demonstrated in several experiments at KEK [1], APS [2], FLASH [3] and possibly other facilities. These experiments were performed in extraction beam lines of lepton machines. However this technique can also be applied to high energy hadron beams. In this report we consider the ODR produced by such beams with the target as a round hole and apply the results to the Tevatron. This radiation is produced when a beam passes in the vicinity of a conducting target. The electro-magnetic fields due to the beam induce currents on the target and as the beam propagates, the currents change in time producing radiation both in the direction of beam propagation and along the direction of specular reflection from the target. This latter radiation, also termed backward diffraction radiation (BDR), is more useful for diagnostics since it can be directed out at the same longitudinal location as the target. This radiation is different from optical transition radiation (OTR) in which the beam passes through a metal target. Transition radiation is not suitable for continuous monitoring of a beam in a collider due to the beam energy loss and emittance growth and the fact that the target may be damaged. However the techniques for analyzing ODR are similar in many respects to those for OTR. Measurements of the radiation intensity either in the near field or far-field have been used to determine beam positions and sizes. For example, the beam size and beam position of a 1.28 GeV electron beam were measured in an extraction beam line at KEK [1] using the far-field angular distribution of the radiation. The near-field image was used to monitor the relative beam size of a 7 GeV electron beam in the extraction line at APS [2]. In principle, measurements of the beam divergence are also possible using the interference of ODR between two targets, as has been done with OTR. This paper is motivated by the desire to use this technique in colliders, especially for the LHC and possibly for future colliders envisaged such as the muon collider. A brief report on these prospects was presented earlier [4]. If the technique yields beam measurements with sufficient accuracy and reliability then the non-invasive nature would allow continuous monitoring during the length of a luminosity run. This would be valuable if the beam can be imaged close to the interaction points. Synchrotron radiation is already used as a non-invasive diagnostic tool in the Tevatron and will also be used in the LHC. The principal advantage of ODR is that it can be generated in a straight section and therefore used for imaging in an experimental insertion. The disadvantage is that the ODR flux is less copious than synchrotron radiation (OSR) and imaging will take longer than with OSR. In Section 2 we briefly discuss the parameters of different hadron colliders. In Section 3 we derive the basic results for the angular differential spectrum of ODR from a round hole due to a bunch. We apply these results in Section 4 to find the sensitivity of the spectrum to beam size and offset changes. In Section 5, we calculate the expected photon yield from a bunch per turn as a function of frequency and we use this to find the frequency range where a sufficiently strong ODR signal can be obtained. In Section 6 we do a brief comparison of the ODR spectrum with the OTR spectrum. We briefly list in Section 7 the experimental issues associated with measuring ODR when two beams are present. We end with our conclusions in Section 8. We will use CGS units throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A charged particle passing through the boundary of two medias with different permittivity values generates Transition Radiation (TR), [1]. The TR is caused by a variation of the particle electric field with variation of the permittivity. The TR for relativistic particles has a wide spectrum with a significant portion in the optical range. The Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) is widely used for a beam profile monitoring and measurements of a beam size. Moreover, OTR can be used to characterize the energy, energy spread and transverse angles in the beam by employing the interference of the OTR from two thin films [2] inserted in the beam trajectory. This method has been applied in number of works [3-5] demonstrating high results and good coincidence in measurements and calculations. In this paper we present and discuss in details a simulation of the interference pattern in several experimental setups. We consider the main optical effects, for diagnostics for the beam properties at A0 Photoinjector and the ILC module test area (NML) in a wide range of electron beam energy. In this paper, we first derive the OTR intensity formula for a single film at 90 degrees to the beam, then for two films at normal incidence, and finally with films at 45 degree incidence to the beam. The last section illustrates application with beam parameters like those at the A0 Photoinjector (electron energy 15 MeV).

Book excerpt: Observations of strongly enhanced optical transition radiation (OTR) following significant bunch compression of photoinjector beams by a chicane have been reported during the commissioning of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) accelerator and recently at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) linac. These localized transverse spatial features involve signal enhancements of nearly a factor of 10 and 100 in the APS case at the 150-MeV and 375-MeV OTR stations, respectively. They are consistent with a coherent process seeded by noise and may be evidence of a longitudinal space charge (LSC) microbunching instability which leads to coherent OTR (COTR) emissions. Additionally, we suggest that localized transverse structure in the previous self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL) data at APS in the visible-UV regime as reported at FEL02 may be attributed to such beam structure entering the FEL undulators and inducing the SASE startup at those structures. Separate beam structures 120 microns apart in x and 2.9 nm apart in wavelength were reported. The details of these observations and operational parameters will be presented.

Book excerpt: FACET-II is a prospective user facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The facility will focus on high-energy, high-brightness beams and their interaction with plasma and lasers. The accelerator is designed for high-energy-density electron beams with peak currents of approximately 50 kA (potentially 100 kA) that are focused down to below 10x10 micron transverse spot size at an energy of 10 GeV. Subsequent phases of the facility will provide positron beams above 10 kA peak current to the experiment station. Experiments will require well characterised beams; however, the high peak current of the electron beam can lead to material failure in wirescanners, optical transition radiation screens and other instruments critical for measurement or delivery. The radiation environment and space constraints also put additional pressure on diagnostic design.
