Realization of complex optical signal processing functionalities seems more possible than any time before, thanks to the recent achievements in silicon photonics towards large-scale photonic integration. In this Ph. D. work, a novel thermal reconfiguration technology is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for silicon photonics that is compact, low-loss, low-power, fast, with a large tuning-range. These properties are all required for large-scale optical signal processing and had not been simultaneously achieved in a single device technology prior to this work. This device technology is applied to a new class of resonator-based devices for reconfigurable nonlinear optical signal processing. For the first time, we have demonstrated the possibility of resonance wavelength tuning of individual resonances and their coupling coefficients. Using this new device concept, we have demonstrated tunable wavelength-conversion through four-wave mixing in a resonator-based silicon device for the first time.

Book excerpt: "This thesis concerns all-optical signal processing and microwave photonics techniques basedon integrated silicon photonics devices. Firstly, we have designed and characterized a typeof integrated 2R regenerator for restoring 10 Gb/s on-off keying signals in simulation, withprospect for simultaneous multi-channel 2R regeneration for even higher speed. Furthermore,we demonstrate photonic generation of chirped microwave pulses using an integratedsilicon distributed Fabry-Pérot cavity as a spectral shaper, with the possibility of a ultimate'blackbox' solution. This two demonstrations investigate in scaling up the integrationlevel of silicon device so as to escalate the usabilities and functionalities of all-optical signalprocessing and microwave photonic subsystems. Secondly, we have designed and fabricateda mode-selective nonlinear silicon device and proposed a method of harnessing nonlinearoptical effects in a mode-selective manner to realize simultaneous multi-channel broadbandwavelength conversion and signal regeneration for 10 Gb/s OOK signals. Using the sametechnique, we succeed in demonstrating simultaneous multi-channel RF spectrum analyzerfor 640 GHz and 160 GHz optical waveforms in a single multi-mode waveguide. We believethat the method of harnessing nonlinear optics in a mode-selective manner has potentialto scale to a higher number of channels and opens up a new degree of freedom in realizingvarious multi-channel all-optical signal processing and microwave photonics functionalitiesin an integrated photonic device." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon photonics is a subject of growing interest with the potential of delivering planar electro-optical devices with chip scale integration. Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology has provided a marvelous platform for photonics industry because of its advantages in integration capability in CMOS circuit and countless nonlinearity applications in optical signal processing. This thesis is focused on the investigation of planar imaging techniques on SOI platform and potential applications in ultra-fast optical signal processing. In the first part, a general review and background introduction about integrated photonics circuit and planar imaging technique are provided. In chapter 2, planar imaging platform is realized by a silicon photodiode on SOI chip. Silicon photodiode on waveguide provides a high numerical aperture for an imaging transceiver pixel. An erbium doped Y2O3 particle is excited by 1550nm Laser and the fluorescent image is obtained with assistance of the scanning system. Fluorescence image is reconstructed by using image de-convolution technique. Under photovoltaic mode, we use an on-chip photodiode and an external PIN photodiode to realize similar resolution as 5æm. In chapter 3, a time stretching technique is developed to a spatial domain to realize a 2D imaging system as an ultrafast imaging tool. The system is evaluated based on theoretical calculation. The experimental results are shown for a verification of system capability to imaging a micron size particle or a finger print. Meanwhile, dynamic information for a moving object is also achieved by correlation algorithm. In chapter 4, the optical leaky wave antenna based on SOI waveguide has been utilized for imaging applications and extensive numerical studied has been conducted. and the theoretical explanation is supported by leaky wave theory. The highly directive radiation has been obtained from the broadside with 15.7 dB directivity and a 3dB beam width of [Delta] Ø 3dB [approximate] 1.65° in free space environment when ß1 = -2.409 x 105 /m, [alpha]=4.576 x 103 /m. At the end, electronics beam-steering principle has been studied and the comprehensive model has been built to explain carrier transformation behavior in a PIN junction as individual silicon perturbation. Results show that 109 /cm3 is possible obtained with electron injection mechanism. Although the radiation modulation based on carrier injection of 1019 /cm3 gives 0.5dB variation, resonant structure, such as Fabry Perrot Cavity, can be integrated with LOWAs to enhance modulation effect.

Book excerpt: The subject "optical signal processing" can and should include all aspects of optics and signal processing. However, that is too large a scope for a textbook that, like this one, is intended as an introduc tion to the subject at a level suitable for first year graduate students of electrical engineering, physics, and optical engineering. There fore, the subject matter has been restricted. The book begins with basic background material on optics, signal processing, matrix alge bra, ultrasound and SAWs, and CCDs. One might argue about this choice of topics. For example, there already exist very good books on matrix algebra. However, matrix algebra is so important in sig nal processing, especially in connection with devices such as optical matrix processors, that it was felt that a review was essential. Also, the matrix algebra needed for systolic arrays and parallel computing has made great advances in recent years. My original intention was to write a single-volume textbook cov ering most of the fundamental concepts and applications of optical signal processing. However, it soon became apparent that the large amount of material to be included would make publication in a single volume impracticable. Therefore this volume treats the "fundamen tals" and a second volume will appear dealing with devices and applications. This textbook was stimulated by a set of short courses that I have directed and lectured since 1976, as well as regular courses that I have taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1974.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro-ring resonators (MRRs) are employed to generate signals used for optical communication applications, where they can be integrated in a single system. These structures are ideal candidates for very large-scale integrated (VLSI) photonic circuits, since they provide a wide range of optical signal processing functions while being ultra-compact. Soliton pulses have sufficient stability for preservation of their shape and velocity. Technological progress in fields such as tunable narrow band laser systems, multiple transmission, and MRR systems constitute a base for the development of new transmission techniques. Controlling the speed of a light signal has many potential applications in fiber optic communication and quantum computing. The slow light effect has many important applications and is a key technology for all optical networks such as optical signal processing. Generation of slow light in MRRs is based on the nonlinear optical fibers. Slow light can be generated within the micro-ring devices, which will be able to be used with the mobile telephone. Therefore, the message can be kept encrypted via quantum cryptography. Thus perfect security in a mobile telephone network is plausible. This research study involves both numerical experiments and theoretical work based on MRRs for secured communication.
