Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin Films for Optical Coating emphasizes the applications of thin films, deposition of thin films, and thin film characterization. Unlike monographs on this subject, this book presents the views of many expert authors. Individual chapters span a wide arc of topics within this field of study. The book offers an introduction to usual and unusual applications of optical thin films, treating in a more qualitative way general topics such as anticounterfeiting coatings, decorative coatings, light switches, contrast enhancement coatings, multiplexers, optical memories, and more. Contributors review thin film media for optical data storage, UV broadband and narrow-band filters, and optically active thin film coatings. Ion beam sputtering and magnetron sputtering deposition methods are described in detail. Characterization techniques are provided, including Raman spectroscopy and absorption measurements. The book also offers theories on light scattering of thin dielectric films and the electromagnetic properties of nanocermet thin films. This reference incorporates recent research by the individual authors with their views of current developments in their respective fields. Of particular interest to the reader will be an assessment of the historical developments of thin film physics written by one of the fathers of thin film technology, Professor M. Auwärter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optics and optical recording have a long history. Already in the ancient temples of Egypt and in Stonehenge, optical imaging was used in religious ceremonies. As early as the 17th century, optical instruments such as the telescope and the microscope played a crucial role in the development of the natural sciences, which, in turn, altered humanity's perception of itself and the universe. Nowadays, the science of optics is not only a means of gathering information but, also, of information transfer, analysis and processing. Our reliance on optical computing has become crucial since 1982, when compact discs (CD's) first became widely available. Optical memory discs, CD ROM (read-only memory), WORM (write-once-read many) and erasable read-write discs are now produced industrially. However, WORM and erasable discs comprise only a small field of optical imaging and information processing. Recent research into optical recording introduced new horizons for optical computing and real time information processing, such as, three-dimensiomil holographic memory, time-domain holography, nonlinear optical filtering, etc. The development of these unique possibilities is conceivable only with new recording materials and novel recording processes. For such progress, one should be familiar with the "pen and paper" of optical recording - the laser and the optical medium. Thus, this book will be a guide to novel applications of optical recording materials. The reader will find a description of the principles of optical recording and optical processing, which allow him to find novel applications for information storage and optical imaging.

Book excerpt: Basic Electrophysiological Methods provides a concise and easy-to-read guide on a selection of the most important contemporary electrophysiological techniques, their implementation, applications, and ways in which they can be combined and integrated with neuroscientific techniques. Intended for students, postdocs, and faculty with a basic neuroscience background, this text will not obscure the relevant technical details with textbook neuroscience tutorials as many other books do. Instead, each chapter provides a conscientious overview of the underlying theory -- a comprehensive description of equipment, materials, methods, data management, and analysis -- a troubleshooting guide, and a list of frequently asked questions. No book or online resource can function as strictly a DIY set of instructions on how to implement a complex technique. However, this book provides a fundamental and accessible set of information intended to form a foundation prior to, during, and after hands-on experience and training, greatly facilitating the initial learning process and subsequent fine-tuning of technical details.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses membrane potential imaging in the nervous system and in the heart and modern optical recording technology. Additionally, it covers organic and genetically-encoded voltage-sensitive dyes; membrane potential imaging from individual neurons, brain slices, and brains in vivo; optical imaging of cardiac tissue and arrhythmias; bio-photonics modelling. This is an expanded and fully-updated second edition, reflecting all the recent advances in this field. Twenty chapters, all authored by leading names in the field, are cohesively structured into four sections. The opening section focuses on the history and principles of membrane potential imaging and lends context to the following sections, which examine applications in single neurons, networks, large neuronal populations and the heart. Topics discussed include population membrane potential signals in development of the vertebrate nervous system, use of membrane potential imaging from dendrites and axons, and depth-resolved optical imaging of cardiac activation and repolarization. The final section discusses the potential – and limitations – for new developments in the field, including new technology such as non-linear optics, advanced microscope designs and genetically encoded voltage sensors. Membrane Potential Imaging in the Nervous System and Heart is ideal for neurologists, electro physiologists, cardiologists and those who are interested in the applications and the future of membrane potential imaging.
