Book excerpt: The polarization and differential cross sections for neutrons scattered from Zr, Nb, Mo, and Cd were measured at five angles for neutron energies between 0.275 and 0.85 Mev. The results were analyzed in terms of a local optical model equivalent to the noniocal model of Perey. The analysis leads to the following major conclusions; the calculations, corrected for the effects of compound elastic scattering, are consistent with most of the observed scattering data, particularly when a spin-orbit potential that includes both a real and imaginary term of the Thomas type is employed; and calculations (based on this model) of the magnitude and shape of the P-wave neutron strength function in the region near A = 100 are not very sensitive to the parameters of the spin-orbit potential -- at least when the real term is between 7 and 2 Mev and the imaginary term is between 0 and 7 Mev. Book excerpt: Over a wide range of incident energies, the total cross section and angular distributions for elastic scattering of neutrons from nuclei in these mass regions are analyzed using the spherical-optical-statistical model. The effect of a real-surface-peaked potential, predicted by dispersion relations, is considered. It is found that when the data on a given nucleus between say, 4.5 and 10 MeV, are analyzed simultaneously one obtains a smooth energy variation of the optical model parameters. Moreover, this parameterization may be used to predict, quite accurately, at least the total cross sections up to 20 MeV. The parameters characterizing the model are quite different in the two mass regions. However, a comparison of the optical model results for (89Y and 93Nb indicates that near A = 90 the real well parameters are nearly the same for the two nuclei and that the volume integrals of the imaginary potentials are similar. 16 refs., 9 figs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: Elastic neutron scattering cross sections of 2°6Pb, 2°7Pb, 2°8Pb and 2°9Bi are measured at incident neutron energy intervals of approx. 25 keV from 0.6 to 1.0 MeV with resolutions of approx. 25 keV. Optical model parameters are obtained from the energy-averaged experimental results for each of the isotopes. The observed elastic-neutron-scattering distributions and derived parameters for the lead isotopes (doubly magic or neutron holes in the closed shell) tend to differ from those of 2°9Bi (doubly closed shell plus a proton). These potentials, derived in the approx. spherical region of A approximately 208, are extrapolated for the analysis of total and scattering cross sections of 238U introducing only a small N-Z/A dependence and the known deformation of 238U. Good descriptions of 238U total cross sections are obtained from a few hundred keV to 10.0 MeV and the prediction of measured scattering distributions in the low MeV region are as suitable as frequently reported with other specially developed potentials.

Book excerpt: Neutron strength functions and scattering radii are useful as energy and channel radius independent parameters that characterize neutron scattering resonances and provide a connection between R-matrix resonance analysis and the optical model. The choice of R-matrix channel radii is discussed, as are limitations on the accuracies of strength functions. New definitions of the p-wave strength function and scattering radius are proposed. For light nuclei, where strength functions display optical model energy variations over the resolved resonances, a doubly reduced partial neutron width is introduced for more meaningful statistical analyses of widths. The systematic behavior of strength functions and scattering radii is discussed.
