Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of optical methods for fluid flow investigations appears to be nontraceable. This is no matter for surprise. After all seeing provides the most direct and common way for humans to learn about their environment. But at the same time some of the most sophisticated methods for doing measurements in fluids are also based on light and often laser light. A very large amount of material has been published in this area over the last two decades. Why then another publication? Well, the field is still in a state of rapid development. It is characterised by the use of results and methods developed within very different areas like optical physics, spectroscopy, communication systems, electronics and computer science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and, of course, fluid dynamics. We are not aware of a book containing both introductory and more advanced material that covers the same material as presented here. The book is the result of a compilation and expansion of material presented at a summer school on Optical Diagnosticsfor Flow Processes, held at RiS0 National Laboratory and the Technical University of Denmark in September 1993. The aim of the course was to provide a solid background for understanding, evaluating, and using modem optical diagnostic methods, addressing Ph. D. students and researchers active in areas of fluid flow research. The disciplines represented by the participants ranged from atmospheric fluid dynamics to biomedicine.

Book excerpt: Optical methods are now used routinely for the measurement of velocity, concentration, temperature, and other parameters in wide-ranging areas of industrial research and design such as IC engines, turbines, and combustors. Recent advances such as the use of high-resolution CCD cameras and the extension of flow mapping to three dimensions, make optical tools such as particle image velocimetry increasingly viable for use in the industrial environment. This excellent book presents new developments in optical diagnostic techniques in heat and fluid flow and offers an unparalleled opportunity for industrialists and academic researchers to exchange ideas. CONTENTS INCLUDE: Comparison of injector sprays for gasoline direct-injection engines The design, development, and preliminary results from a high-speed, optically accessed, single cylinder engine The reflected spectrum of complex multi-layered inhomogeneous highly scattering medium Development of full volume digital holography for particle measurement Improved liquid crystal thermography by using true-colour image processing technology Development of an optical measuring technique for the study of acoustical phenomena Spatio-temporal reconstruction of the unsteady wake of axisymmetric bluff bodies via time-recording DPIV Application of particle image velocimetry to helicopter vortex interactions Pulsed laser particle image velocimetry using a fibre-optic delivery system Automated fringe analysis for profilometric mass-transfer experiments.

Book excerpt: In 2003 the German Research Foundation established a new priority programme on the subject of “Imaging Measurement Methods for Flow Analysis” (SPP 1147). This research programme was based on the fact that experimental ?ow analysis, in addition to theory and numerics, has always played a predominant part both in ?ow research and in other areas of industrial practice. At the time, however, c- parisons with numerical tools (such as Computational Fluid Dynamics), which were increasingly used in research and practical applications, soon made it clear that there are relatively few experimental procedures which can keep up with state-of-the-art numerical methods in respect of their informative value, e.g. with regard to visu- spatial analysis or the dynamics of ?ow ?elds. The priority programme “Imaging Measurement Methods for Flow Analysis” was to help close this development gap. Hence the project was to focus on the investigation of ef?cient measurement me- ods to analyse complex spatial ?ow ?elds. Speci?c cooperations with computer sciences and especially measurement physics were to advance ?ow measurement techniques to a widely renowned key technology, exceeding the classical ?elds of ?uid mechanics by a long chalk.

Book excerpt: The techniques of flow visualization and their application in wind tunnels, water channels, and experiments related to propulsion research are reviewed. These techniques can be classified roughly into three major groups: Surface flow visualization, scattering from flow tracers, and density sensitive flow visualization. The progress in laser optics and the wide-spread use of computers has led to the development of new techniques and evaluation procedures, which are included in the review; e.g. laser-induced fluorescence, speckle photography, image processing, and optical tomography. Emphasis is given to the discussion of the physical background of the methods. Information on technical details is provided by means of a number of sample photographs and by respective references.

Book excerpt: The General Assembly of the International Union of Theoreti cal and Applied Mechanics decided in Cambridge, United King dom, in 1982 to arrange the Symposium on Optical Methods in the Dynamics of Fluids and Solids. This decision was stimu lated by the fact that optical diagnostic methods are a more and more important tool in experimental mechanics. In contrast to the foregoing Symposium in Poitiers. 1976, which was devoted exclusively to optical methods in the me chanics of solids, it was a fruitful idea to bring together during the present Symposium scientists engaged in optical methods in the dynamics of all phases. It was proposed by the International Scientific Committee of the Symposium that contributions in experimental fluid dynamics should deal with transition from laminar to turbu lent flow, compressible fluid flow including high temperatu re flow, non-equilibrium phenomena in fluid dynamics and the interaction of fluid flow with solid boundaries and bodies. As regard. the mechanics of solids, the contributions should deal with the application of optical methods in the wave propagation in shock loaded bodies, in phenomena connected with the fracture mechanism, in nonstationary Vibrations of elements and parts of systems and in nonstationary strains in structures. The International Scientific Committee preferred to avoid invited lectures and in cooperation with the National Com mittees of IUTAM called for contribution from individual countries.

Book excerpt: Flow Visualization, Second Edition focuses on developments, applications, and results in the field of flow visualization. Organized into four chapters, this book begins with the principles of flow visualization and image processing. Subsequent chapters describe the methods of flow visualization, particularly the addition of foreign material to the flowing fluid that might be gaseous or liquid; certain optical methods that are sensitive to changes of the index of refraction; and flow field marking by heat and energy addition.

Book excerpt: This volume is based on material prepared by the contributors to the symposium on "Progress in Gas Dynamic Research by Optical Methods", held on May 25-26, 1970 in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University. The contents focus on experimental and analytical aspects of contemporary op tical methods as applied in modern research on high speed and/or high temperature gaseous flows. State of the art, recent research results and possible research applications of spectroscopy, spectral interferometry, pulse laser holographic interferometry, laser as a diagnostic and plasma generating tool and the analysis of plasma by light scattering constitute part of the subject matter of this vol ume. The emerging importance and impact of recent laser developments on optical diagnostics of gas dynamic and gas-physics phenomena is a recurring theme throughout the volume. Diverse applications of the shock tube to process gases to high temperature equilibrium conditions and the study of important char acteristics of these radiating gases by contemporary spectroscopic methods are discussed in papers by Nicholls, Wurster and Wares, et al. Refractivity index measurements have long been extensively used for investigating gas dynamic and aerodynamic flows. However, the recent availability of the laser as a light source has brought sig nificant improvements in the more conventional optical methods such as schlieren photography and interferometry as reported here in Alcock's paper. More recent laser developments have resulted in several com pletely new optical diagnostic methods.

Book excerpt: Flow Visualization describes the most widely used methods for visualizing flows. Flow visualization evaluates certain properties of a flow field directly accessible to visual perception. Organized into five chapters, this book first presents the methods that create a visible flow pattern that could be investigated by visual inspection, such as simple dye and density-sensitive visualization methods. It then deals with the application of electron beams and streaming birefringence. Optical methods for compressible flows, hydraulic analogy, and high-speed photography are discussed in other chapters. With appropriate flow pictures, this book tries to distinguish the various methods and the range of their applicability by outlining the physical principles on which each method is based.
