Book excerpt: Ocean satellite remote sensing plays important roles in the observations of physical, biological and biogeochemical features in inland, coastal, and global ocean waters, with high temporal and spatial resolution. The satellite-measured ocean products are used for near-real-time ocean monitoring and climate data records to understand short-/long-term variabilities in marine environments and ecosystems as well as for decision making tools to manage social, economic, and environmental benefits. Validation/evaluation including a combination of field measurements and inter-satellite comparison is an essential step in providing more accurate satellite-derived ocean products. In this Special Issue, 14 papers have been published and include research on validation/evaluation, retrieval algorithms of ocean geophysical and biogeochemical parameters, and application of the satellite ocean products in the regional and global ocean. Subjects treated include: Sea Surface Temperature; Sea Ice Surface Temperature from VIIRS thermal infrared sensor; Sea Ice Detection from Spectroradiometer; Sea Surface Winds from HY-2A Scatterometer and GNSS—Reflectometry; Wave Height from Sentinel-3A SAR; Retrievals of Sea Surface Salinity, Chlorophyll-a, Particulate Organic Carbon, Particulate Backscattering, Marine Fishery resource, and Submesoscale Eddies from multiple Ocean Colour sensors.

Book excerpt: As climate change, resource overexploitation, and pollution leave ever more visible marks, ocean ecosystems, economies, and people are all affected. With coasts on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic, Canada faces a formidable challenge in building resilient, sustainable oceans and supporting the communities that rely on them. Sea Change reports on the OceanCanada Partnership, a multidisciplinary project to take stock of what we know about Canada’s oceans, construct possible scenarios for coastal regions, and create a national dialogue and vision. Three themes emerge from this impressive synthesis of social, cultural, economic, and environmental research: ocean change, access to ocean resources, and ocean governance. Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and practitioners focus on finding solutions to rapid environmental and social transformation, outlining the implications for legislation and offering policy recommendations. Increasingly, civil society will have to advocate for oceans, and Sea Change will empower the voices of those who take up that task.

Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.

Book excerpt: This book aims at providing students and researchers an advanced integrative overview on zooplankton ecology, covering marine and freshwater organisms, from microscopic phagotrophic protists, to macro-jellyfishes and active fish larvae. The first book section addresses zooplanktonic organisms and processes, the second section is devoted to zooplankton spatial and temporal distribution patterns and trophic dynamics, and the final section is dedicated to emergent methodological approaches (e.g., omics). Book chapters include comprehensive synthesis, observational and manipulative studies, and sediment-based analysis, a vibrant imprint of benthic-pelagic coupling and ecosystem connectivity. Most chapters also address the impacts of anticipated environmental changes (e.g., warming, acidification).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our longterm goal is to contribute to a fundamental understanding of the sources of biological, physical and optical variability in coastal ocean systems. Particular focus is on applications useful for studying important ecological processes and the links between phytoplankton properties and physical processes in coastal regions. The overall objective of this project is to improve understanding of the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank system through characterization and modeling of optical properties in the context of physical and biological processes. We wish to describe the processes controlling space/time variability in the various constituents (CDOM, phytoplankton, sediment, detrital particles) that determine the optical properties of this region. As planned, our effort to date has been concentrated on processing and quality control for optical and hydrographic data collected during 5 cruises during 1997-1999. We have also made progress towards compiling an accessible database that includes our observations plus those collected by several other investigators working in the Gulf of Maine region. The compiled database is now being used to generate empirically driven parameterizations of optical variability for the Gulf of Maine region, which will in turn be used to construct an optical submodel (to later be coupled with biological and physical models). Our preliminary efforts to characterize optical variability present in the Gulf of Maine at different times of year have documented that some properties must be considered seasonally variable, while others seem more temporally stable. These observations will be quantitatively incorporated into the optical model we are constructing. Ultimately, we expect that integrating models of optical properties into our physically realistic ecosystem simulations will contribute to better understanding of the processes contributing to optical variability in coastal waters.

Book excerpt: "This report investigates hydrographic changes on the Scotian Shelf and in the Gulf of Maine using 23 CMIP6 earth system models and two future scenarios (SSP245 and SSP370). For each model we first evaluate performance using HadISSTI data and ship-based measurements of bottom temperature. Next, we evaluated seasonality of SST based on forecasts from each CMIP6 model under both climate scenarios. Overall trends of the SST, SSS, SSH, BT and BS for the 2020-2049 period are investigated. In addition, changes of the aforementioned quantities, relative to a historical 1995-2014 period, are calculated for two future periods, 2030-2049 and 2040-2049"--Abstract, page v.

Book excerpt: This report presents and analyzes water temperature and salinity data collected during 11 mesopelagic resource inventory cruises in the continental slope region between 55 and 65 degrees west longitude. The data analysis results define water mass boundary positions in the upper 450 meters during the period of each cruise. Charts of surface boundary conditions based on satellite infrared imagery aid in interpreting the cruise data, and small numbers of bathythermograph casts to 1830 meters and conductivity-temperature-depth recorder casts to 1000 meters provide data for deeper waters. The report also describes the variation of temperature and salinity over time at a fixed location (41 degrees north, 61 degrees 30 minutes west) based on three occupations for periods of 1.5 to 3.5 days.

Book excerpt: The management & use of the large offshore biogeographic area known as the Eastern Scotian Shelf Oceans Management Area involves a broad range of interests, including government, First Nations, ocean industry & resource users, environmental groups, coastal communities, and university researchers. To initiate multi-stakeholder dialogue on managing this area, Fisheries & Oceans Canada initiated the workshop summarized in this report. Workshop objectives were to promote sectoral & cross-sectoral dialogue & capacity building for integrated oceans management & planning and to discuss key elements of the Eastern Scotian Shelf Integrated Management Initiative, including its vision & objectives, a collaborative management & planning process, and the future integrated oceans management plan. The report includes summaries of workshop presentations, small group discussions, the final plenary discussion, and key comments from four discussion sessions; and a synthesis of responses from a survey of workshop participants.
