Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the textbook and reference resource that instructors, students, and researchers in biomedical optics have been waiting for. Comprehensive and up to date, it covers a broad range of areas in biomedical optics, from light interactions at the single-photon and single-biomolecule levels, to the diffusion regime of light propagation in tissue. Subjects covered include spectroscopic techniques (fluorescence, Raman, infrared, near-infrared, and elastic scattering), imaging techniques (diffuse optical tomography, photoacoustic imaging, several forms of modern microscopy, and optical coherence tomography), and laser-tissue interactions, including optical tweezers. Topics are developed from the fundamental principles of physical science, with intuitive explanations, while rigorous mathematical formalisms of theoretical treatments are also provided. For each technique, descriptions of relevant instrumentation and examples of biomedical applications are outlined, and each chapter benefits from references and suggested resources for further reading, and exercise problems with answers to selected problems.

Book excerpt: The field of molecular imaging of living subjects have evolved considerably and have seen spectacular advances in chemistry, engineering and biomedical applications. This textbook was designed to fill the need for an authoritative source for this multi-disciplinary field. We have been fortunate to recruit over 80 leading authors contributing 75 individual chapters. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the field, the book is broken into six different sections: "Molecular Imaging technologies", "Chemistry", "Molecular Imaging in Cell and Molecular Biology", "Applications of Molecular Imaging", "Molecular Imaging in Drug Evaluation" with the final section comprised of chapters on computation, bioinformatics and modeling. The organization of this large amount of information is logical and strives to avoid redundancies among chapters. It encourages the use of figures to illustrate concepts and to provide numerous molecular imaging examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An excellent primer on medical imaging for all members of the medical profession . . . including non-radiological specialists. It is technically solid and filled with diagrams and clinical images illustrating important points, but it is also easily readable . . . So many outstanding chapters . . . The book uses little mathematics beyond simple algebra [and] presents complex ideas in very understandable terms." —Melvin E. Clouse, MD, Vice Chairman Emeritus, Department of Radiology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Deaconess Professor of Radiology, Harvard Medical School A well-known medical physicist and author, an interventional radiologist, and an emergency room physician with no special training in radiology have collaborated to write, in the language familiar to physicians, an introduction to the technology and clinical applications of medical imaging. It is intentionally brief and not overly detailed, intended to help clinicians with very little free time rapidly gain enough command of the critically important imaging tools of their trade to be able to discuss them confidently with medical and technical colleagues; to explain the general ideas accurately to students, nurses, and technologists; and to describe them effectively to concerned patients and loved ones. Chapter coverage includes: Introduction: Dr. Doe's Headaches Sketches of the Standard Imaging Modalities Image Quality and Dose Creating Subject Contrast in the Primary X-Ray Image Twentieth-Century (Analog) Radiography and Fluoroscopy Radiation Dose and Radiogenic Cancer Risk Twenty-First-Century (Digital) Imaging Digital Planar Imaging Computed Tomography Nuclear Medicine (Including SPECT and PET) Diagnostic Ultrasound (Including Doppler) MRI in One Dimension and with No Relaxation Mapping T1 and T2 Proton Spin Relaxation in 3D Evolving and Experimental Modalities

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurophotonics and Biomedical Spectroscopy addresses the novel state-of-the-art work in non-invasive optical spectroscopic methods that detect the onset and progression of diseases and other conditions, including pre-malignancy, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, tissue and cell response to therapeutic intervention, unintended injury and laser energy deposition. The book then highlights research in neurophotonics that investigates single and multi-photon excitation optical signatures of normal/diseased nerve tissues and in the brain, providing a better understanding of the underlying biochemical and structural changes of tissues and cells that are responsible for the observed spectroscopic signatures. Topics cover a wide array of well-established UV, visible, NIR and IR optical and spectroscopic techniques and novel approaches to diagnose tissue changes, including: label free in vivo and ex vivo fluorescence spectroscopy, Stoke shift spectroscopy, spectral imaging, Resonance Raman spectroscopy, multiphoton two Photon excitation, and more. - Provides an overview of the spectroscopic properties of tissue and tissue-light interaction, describing techniques to exploit these properties in imaging - Explores the potential and significance of molecule-specific imaging and its capacity to reveal vital new information on nanoscale structures - Offers a concise overview of different spectroscopic methods and their potential benefits for solving diagnostic and therapeutic problems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes some very recent applications and the newest emerging trends of hyper-spectral imaging (HSI). HSI is a very recent and strange beast, a sort of a melting pot of previous techniques and scientific interests, merging and concentrating the efforts of physicists, chemists, botanists, biologists, and physicians, to mention just a few, as well as experts in data crunching and statistical elaboration. For almost a century, scientific observation, from looking to planets and stars down to our own cells and below, could be divided into two main categories: analyzing objects on the basis of their physical dimension (recording size, position, weight, etc. and their variations) or on how the object emits, reflects, or absorbs part of the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e., spectroscopy. While the two aspects have been obviously entangled, instruments and skills have always been clearly distinct from each other. With HSI now available, this is no longer the case. This instrument can return specimen dimensionalities and spectroscopic properties to any single pixel of your specimen, in a single set of data. HSI modality is ubiquitous and scale-invariant enough to be used to mark terrestrial resources on the basis of a land map obtained from satellite observation (actually, the oldest application of this type) or to understand if the cell you are looking at is cancerous or perfectly healthy. For all these reasons, HSI represents one of the most exciting methodologies of the new millennium.

Book excerpt: The April 1997 conference held in Prague attracted the cream of primarily European and Russian researchers (with a handful from the US, primarily from the U. of Maryland School of Medicine) to the burgeoning biological and medical applications of innovative optical technology, particularly laser confocal fluorescence microscopy. Six invited review lectures illuminate these recent developments and their role in cell biology, including computer simulations of molecular behavior. The 34 other papers focus on the major themes of: new developments in fluorescence instrumentation; fluorescent probes; nucleic acid labels; and other fluorescent labels, markers, and fluorogenic substrates. Book excerpt: Evidence suggests that medical innovation is becoming increasingly dependent on interdisciplinary research and on the crossing of institutional boundaries. This volume focuses on the conditions governing the supply of new medical technologies and suggest that the boundaries between disciplines, institutions, and the private and public sectors have been redrawn and reshaped. Individual essays explore the nature, organization, and management of interdisciplinary R&D in medicine; the introduction into clinical practice of the laser, endoscopic innovations, cochlear implantation, cardiovascular imaging technologies, and synthetic insulin; the division of innovating labor in biotechnology; the government- industry-university interface; perspectives on industrial R&D management; and the growing intertwining of the public and proprietary in medical technology.
