Book excerpt: Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a hollow structure consisted by one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms, which can be considered as a rolled-up graphene sheet. The diameter and rolling angle (chirality) uniquely determines its electronic structure. Over two decades of study, due to the difficulty of synthesizing clean individual CNTs and the limitation of accurate chirality characterization, there are still unveiled questions towards the intrinsic properties of this 1-D material at single molecular level. In this thesis, I will discuss the approaches of fabricating chirality assigned CNT device and the experimental results of its optical and electrical properties. In the first part, I describe using 'fast heating' chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to achieve the high quality suspended CNT growth. Combining Rayleigh and Raman spectroscopy, I demonstrate the accurate assignment of chirality for each suspended individual CNT. With the ability of chirality identification, a series of optical and electrical experiments were conducted on the selected CNTs of interest.

Book excerpt: The focus in this thesis is on the work that went into designing and testing this process as well as the initial results of the electronic properties of those carbon nanotubes of known chirality, such as the first known electrical measurements on single individual armchair carbon nanotubes as well as the first known electrical measurements of a single semiconducting carbon nanotube on thin hexagonal boron nitride to study the effects of the surface optical phonons from the boron nitride on the electrical properties of the carbon nanotube. Finally a few research projects are discussed in which carbon nanotubes of known chirality were used in conjunction with first electrical tests on molecules, secondly on a prefabricated complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor integrated circuit as an inverter and lastly to study the photoconductivity generated by a synchrotron laser source to identify the values for the low energy excitonic peak.

The unique structure of carbon nanotubes provides nanotubes with extraordinary mechanical and electrical properties. The outstanding properties that these materials possess have opened new interesting researches areas in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Although nanotubes are very promising in a wide variety of fields, application of individual nanotubes for large scale production has been limited. The main roadblocks, which hinder its use, are limited understanding of its synthesis and electrical properties which lead to difficulty in structure control, existence of impurities, and poor processability. This book makes an attempt to provide indepth study and analysis of various synthesis methods, processing techniques and characterization of carbon nanotubes that will lead to the increased applications of carbon nanotubes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes are of great interest as a semiconducting material with diameters around 1nm and length in the 100s of nm to mm range. The large aspect ratio, near-infrared wavelength bandgap and a high conductivity enable a large number of optical and optoelectronic applications inaccessible by other materials. However, carbon nanotubes as produced are heterogeneous in electronic properties that are dependent on their chirality. Small changes in geometry of the tube dramatically change the bandgap of the tube, and whether it is metallic or semiconducting. This thesis establishes the first reproducible method by which to separate a single electronic type of carbon nanotube, i.e. a single chirality. The mechanism by which this separation occurs is explored experimentally and via quantitative modelling. The thesis ends with a demonstration of the first near infrared single chirality carbon nanotube solar cell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes belong to new nanomaterials and have been known for almost 20 years, but their history is somewhat lengthier. They have been identified as promising candidates for various applications.High-temperature preparation techniques are conventional techniques for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes using arc discharge or laser ablation, but today these methods are being replaced by low-temperature vapor deposition techniques, since orientation, alignment, nanotube length, diameter, purity, and density of carbon nanotubes can be precisely controlled. The synthesis of carbon nanotubes by chemical vapor deposition on catalyst arrays leads to nanotube models grown from specific sites on surfaces. The controlled synthesis of nanotubes opens up interesting possibilities in nanoscience and nanotechnologies, including electrical, mechanical and electromechanical properties and devices, chemical functionalization, surface chemistry and photochemistry, molecular sensors, and interfacing with moderate biological systems.Carbon nanotubes are used in many applications due to their unique electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, and other properties. Conductive and high-strength composite materials, energy saving and energy conversion devices, sensors, visualization of field emissions and sources of radiation, means for storing hydrogen, and nanoscale semiconductor devices, probes, and interconnections are some of the many applications of carbon nanotubes.

The description of the nanomaterials in this Handbook follows the thorough but concise explanation of the synergy of structure, properties, processing and applications of the given material. The Handbook mainly describes materials in their solid phase; exceptions might be e.g. small sized liquid aerosols or gas bubbles in liquids. The materials are organized by their dimensionality. Zero dimensional structures collect clusters, nanoparticles and quantum dots, one dimensional are nanowires and nanotubes, while two dimensional are represented by thin films and surfaces. The chapters in these larger topics are written on a specific materials and dimensionality combination, e.g. ceramic nanowires. Chapters are authored by well-established and well-known scientists of the particular field. They have measurable part of publications and an important role in establishing new knowledge of the particular field.

Book excerpt: Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), with their superior combination of electrical and mechanical properties, have drawn attention from many researchers for potential applications in electronics. Many SWNT-based electronic device prototypes have been developed including transistors, interconnects and flexible electronics. In this thesis, a fabrication method for patterned SWNT networks and devices based on colloidal lithography is presented. Patterned SWNT networks are for the first time formed via solution deposition on a heterogeneous surface. This method demonstrates a simple and straight-forward way to fabricate SWNT networks in a controllable manner.Colloidal sphere monolayers were obtained by drop-casting from solution onto clean substrates. The colloidal monolayer was utilized as a mask for the fabrication of patterned SWNT networks. SWNT networks were shown to be patterned either by depositing SWNT solutions on top of a colloidal monolayer or by depositing a mixed SWNT-colloidal sphere aqueous suspension on the substrates. Colloidal monolayers were examined by optical microscopy and it was found that the monolayer quality can be affected by the concentration of colloids in solution. Polystyrene colloidal solution with concentration of 0.02 wt% ~ 0.04 wt % was found optimal for maximum coverage of colloidal monolayers on SiO2 substrates. After removing the colloidal spheres, the topology of the patterned SWNT networks was characterized by atomic force microscopy and scanning electronvmicroscopy. Two-dimensional ordered arrays of SWNT rings and SWNTs interconnecting the SWNT rings were observed in the resulting network structure. The height of the rings was about 4-10 nm and the diameter was about 400 nm. In some samples, mesh-like patterned SWNT networks are also observed. It is hypothesized that the capillary forces induced by Van der Waals interaction at liquid/air/solid interfaces play an important role during the formation of the patterned SWNT networks. Raman spectroscopy was also employed to identify the chirality and diameter of the SWNTs in the networks. Both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs were found in the networks and the diameter of the SWNTs was about 1 to 2 nm.The electrical properties of SWNT networks, including random SWNT networks, partially patterned SWNT networks and fully patterned SWNT networks were characterized by a probe station and a Keithley 4200 semiconductor measurement system ... .

Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Book excerpt: Since their discovery more than a decade ago, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have held scientists and engineers in captive fascination, seated on the verge of enormous breakthroughs in areas such as medicine, electronics, and materials science, to name but a few. Taking a broad look at CNTs and the tools used to study them, Carbon Nanotubes: Properties and Applications comprises the efforts of leading nanotube researchers led by Michael O’Connell, protégé of the late father of nanotechnology, Richard Smalley. Each chapter is a self-contained treatise on various aspects of CNT synthesis, characterization, modification, and applications. The book opens with a general introduction to the basic characteristics and the history of CNTs, followed by discussions on synthesis methods and the growth of “peapod” structures. Coverage then moves to electronic properties and band structures of single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs), magnetic properties, Raman spectroscopy of electronic and chemical behavior, and electromechanical properties and applications in NEMS (nanoelectromechanical systems). Turning to applications, the final sections of the book explore mechanical properties of SWNTs spun into fibers, sidewall functionalization in composites, and using SWNTs as tips for scanning probe microscopes. Taking a fresh look at this burgeoning field, Carbon Nanotubes: Properties and Applications points the way toward making CNTs commercially viable.
