Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first four volumes of the series on 'Charged and Reactive Polymers' have been devoted to polymers in solution (Voh. I and II) or in gel and membrane forms (Vols. III and IV). In correlation with charges, other physical or chemical properties of macro molecules have been considered. Understanding of charge and hydrophobic effects is equally important for synthetic and biopolymers or their systems. Optically Active Polymers are related to problems of the same class, since optical activity is an inherent property of both natural macromolecules as well as a great variety of polymers synthesized in the Jast twenty years. Optical activity is a physical spectral property of chiral matter caused by asymmetrical configurations, conformations and structures which have no plane and no center of symmetry and consequently have two mirror image enantiomeric forms of inverse optical rotation. The racemic mixture of chiral enantiomers is optically inactive. The most common form of optical activity was first measured at a constant wavelength by the angle of rotation of linearly polarized light. More recently the measurements have been extended to the entire range of visible and attainable ultraviolet regions where electronic transitions are observed, giving rise to the ORD technique (Optical Rotatory Dispersion). The Cotton effects appear in the region of optically active absorption bands; outside of these bands the plain curve spectrum is also dependent on all the electronic transitions of the chromophores.

Book excerpt: Written by world-renowned and best-selling experts, Nobel Laureate E. J. Corey and Laszlo Kurti, Enantioselective Chemical Synthesis offers an authoritative and comprehensive overview of the field s progress; the processes and tools for key formations; future development for complex, stereocontrolled (enantiomeric or diastereoisomeric) molecules; and valuable examples of multi-step syntheses. Utilizing a color-coded scheme to illustrate chemical transformations, Enantioselective Chemical Synthesis provides clear explanation and guidance through vital asymmetrical syntheses and insight into the next steps for the field. Researchers, professionals, and academics will benefit from this valuable, thorough, and unique resource. In Part I, the authors present clearly, comprehensively and concisely the most useful enantioselective processes available to synthetic chemists. Part II provides an extensive discussion of the most logical ways to apply these new enantioselective methods to the planning of syntheses of stereochemically complex molecules. This hitherto neglected area is essential for the advancement of enantioselective synthesis to a more rational and powerful level. Part III describes in detail many reaction sequences which have been used successfully for the construction of a wide variety of complex target molecules Clearly explains stereochemical synthesis in theory and practiceProvides a handy tool box for scientists wishing to understand and apply chiral chemical synthesisDescribes almost 50 real life examples of asymmetric synthesis in practice and examines how the chiral centers were introduced at key synthetic stages"

Book excerpt: Organic Chemistry: Made Simple provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts of organic chemistry. A systematic approach to the subject is adopted with compounds classified according to the functional groups present. A non-mathematical approach is applied to the modern theories of chemical structure and bonding. Each chapter also contains a summary and most conclude with a set of problems. The book is organized into four parts. Part I provides introductory material, including the scope of organic chemistry and the architecture of atoms and molecules. Part II discusses aliphatic compounds such as hydrocarbons, halogen derivatives of the paraffins, and alcohols and ethers. Part III covers aromatic compounds including benzene and its derivatives; aromatic amines, diazo compounds, and dyes; and phenols and aromatic alcohols. Part IV deals with heterocyclic compounds, physiologically active compounds, and polymers. This book is written for persons with some knowledge of general or inorganic chemistry who wish to obtain an understanding of organic chemistry. The book more than covers the syllabus for the G.C.E. Advanced Level Chemistry course. It could serve as an organic chemistry textbook or companion reader for students studying for a Teacher's Certificate, Higher National Certificate or Advanced Chemical Technician's Certificate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of remarkable contribution from the experts of interdisciplinary fields of Science with comprehensive, in-depth and up-to-date research and reviews. It describes the applications of date palm for food, medicine and the environmental sectors. Date palm is one of the oldest cultivated trees and its fruit has been a dietary staple around the world for many centuries. Date pulps contain dietary fibers and easily digestible sugars (70%), mainly glucose, sucrose and fructose. They also contain vitamins like biotin, thiamine, riboflavin, ascorbic and folic acid that are important for our body. The date palm fruit has been used in folk remedies for the treatment of various infectious diseases, cancer and immuno-modulatory activity. Date stones and date palm leaves are freely and abundantly available biomass. Therefore, the renovation of agricultural biomass wastes into activated carbons for drinking water purification, wastewater treatment, treatment of dyes, and metal-ions from aqueous solution would add value to agricultural commodities which offer a solution to environmental problems as well as reduce the cost of waste disposal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief explores the importance of lactic acid and fermentation in the modern food industry. Although it is usually associated with milk and dairy products, lactic acid can also be found in many other fermented food products, including confectionery products, jams, frozen desserts, and pickled vegetables. In this work, the authors explain how lactic acid is produced from lactose by Lactobacillus and Streptococcus cultures, and they also emphasise its important role as pH regulator and preservative, helping to the inhibition of microbial growth in fermented foods. The Brief discusses a wide range of lactic acid’s applications as a natural additive, curing or gelling agent, flavour, food carrier, solvent, and discoloration inhibitor, among others. Readers will also find a brief overview of the current analytical methods for the quantitative and qualitative determination of lactic acid in foods.

Book excerpt: Stereochemistry: A Three-Dimensional Insight draws on the knowledge of its expert authors, providing a systematic treatment on the fundamental aspects of stereochemistry, covering conformational aspects, configurational aspects, effects of bulkiness, stereoelectronic effects on properties of molecules, and the genesis of enantiomerism, among other topics. Visuals and exercises are included to consolidate the principles learned, and the contents are carefully structured to prepare readers for predicting and organizing reaction components to obtain desired stereochemical outcomes. This book is an indispensable guide for all those exploring stereochemistry within their work. The principles of stereochemistry are fundamental to understanding chemical behavior and can provide insights into a whole range of problems, from unusual selectivity and unexpected behaviors, to abnormally fast reactions and surprising biochemical preferences. However, understanding and exploring these 3D effects can be difficult within a 2D medium. This book has been designed to address this problem, providing foundational guidance on the principles and applications of stereochemistry that are fully supported by multimedia visuals. - Combines foundational concepts and definitions with examples of stereochemistry in practice - Highlights the conformational and configurational impact of atomic arrangement on chemical behavior - Outlines methods of analysis - Provides practical exercises and detailed multimedia visuals to support learning
