Book excerpt: This Opinion Paper was developed in a context in which there is renewed interest in vacant lots and buildings. For the last several years, resident groups, associations and not-for-profit organizations have been created with the purpose of revitalizing and beautifying them, and occupying them during a temporary period. By showing an interest in these spaces, young Montrealers are reaffirming their sense of belonging to their city. By committing themselves to these spaces, youth are making a commitment to their city, participating with all their creativity.

Book Synopsis The Impact of School Infrastructure on Learning by : Peter Barrett
Download or read book The Impact of School Infrastructure on Learning written by Peter Barrett and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Impact of School Infrastructure on Learning: A Synthesis of the Evidence provides an excellent literature review of the resources that explore the areas of focus for improved student learning, particularly the aspiration for “accessible, well-built, child-centered, synergetic and fully realized learning environments.†? Written in a style which is both clear and accessible, it is a practical reference for senior government officials and professionals involved in the planning and design of educational facilities, as well as for educators and school leaders. --Yuri Belfali, Head of Division, Early Childhood and Schools, OECD Directorate for Education and Skills This is an important and welcome addition to the surprisingly small, evidence base on the impacts of school infrastructure given the capital investment involved. It will provide policy makers, practitioners, and those who are about to commission a new build with an important and comprehensive point of reference. The emphasis on safe and healthy spaces for teaching and learning is particularly welcome. --Harry Daniels, Professor of Education, Department of Education, Oxford University, UK This report offers a useful library of recent research to support the, connection between facility quality and student outcomes. At the same time, it also points to the unmet need for research to provide verifiable and reliable information on this connection. With such evidence, decisionmakers will be better positioned to accurately balance the allocation of limited resources among the multiple competing dimensions of school policy, including the construction and maintenance of the school facility. --David Lever, K-12 Facility Planner, Former Executive Director of the Interagency Committee on School Construction, Maryland Many planners and designers are seeking a succinct body of research defining both the issues surrounding the global planning of facilities as well as the educational outcomes based on the quality of the space provided. The authors have finally brought that body of evidence together in this well-structured report. The case for better educational facilities is clearly defined and resources are succinctly identified to stimulate the dialogue to come. We should all join this conversation to further the process of globally enhancing learning-environment quality! --David Schrader, AIA, Educational Facility Planner and Designer, Former Chairman of the Board of Directors, Association for Learning Environments (A4LE)

Book excerpt: What is a livable community? How do you design and develop one? What does government at all levels need to do to support and nurture the cause of livable communities? Using a blend of theory and practice, the second edition of Community Livability addresses evidence from international, state and local perspectives to explore what is meant by the term "livable communities." The second edition contains new chapters from leading academics and practitioners that examine the various factors that constitute a livable community (e.g., the influence and importance of transportation options/alternatives to the elderly, the importance of walkability as a factor in developing a livable and healthy community, the importance of good open space providing for human activity and health, restorative benefits, etc., the importance of coordinated land use and transportation planning), and the relationship between livability and quality of life. A number of chapters focus on livable communities with case studies from an international perspective in the USA, Canada, Australia, Peru, Sweden, South Korea, Japan, and Austria.
Book Synopsis The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Future of Working Spaces by : Ilaria Mariotti
Download or read book The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Future of Working Spaces written by Ilaria Mariotti and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents a compendium of emerging and innovative studies on the proliferation of new working spaces (NeWSps), both formal and informal (such as coworking spaces, maker spaces, fab labs, public libraries, and coffee shops), and their role during and following the COVID-19 pandemic in urban and regional development and planning. This book presents an original, interdisciplinary approach to NeWSps through three features: (i) situating the debate in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has transformed NeWSp business models and the everyday work life of their owners and users; (ii) repositioning and rethinking the debate on NeWSps in the context of socioeconomics and planning and comparing conditions between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic; and (iii) providing new directions for urban and regional development and resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic, considering new ways of working and living. The 17 chapters are co-authored by both leading international scholars who have studied the proliferation of NeWSps in the last decade and young, talented researchers, resulting in a total of 55 co-authors from different disciplines (48 of whom are currently involved in the COST Action CA18214 ‘The Geography of New Working Spaces and Impact on the Periphery’ 2019–2023: www.new-working-spaces.eu). Selected comparative studies among several European countries (Western and Eastern Europe) and from the US and Lebanon are presented. The book contributes to the understanding of multi-disciplinary theoretical and practical implications of NeWSps for our society, economy, and urban/regional planning in conditions following the COVID-19 pandemic. Book Synopsis Digital Media, Youth, and Credibility by : Miriam J. Metzger
Download or read book Digital Media, Youth, and Credibility written by Miriam J. Metzger and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The difficulties in determining the quality of information on the Internet--in particular, the implications of wide access and questionable credibility for youth and learning. Today we have access to an almost inconceivably vast amount of information, from sources that are increasingly portable, accessible, and interactive. The Internet and the explosion of digital media content have made more information available from more sources to more people than at any other time in human history. This brings an infinite number of opportunities for learning, social connection, and entertainment. But at the same time, the origin of information, its quality, and its veracity are often difficult to assess. This volume addresses the issue of credibility--the objective and subjective components that make information believable--in the contemporary media environment. The contributors look particularly at youth audiences and experiences, considering the implications of wide access and the questionable credibility of information for youth and learning. They discuss such topics as the credibility of health information online, how to teach credibility assessment, and public policy solutions. Much research has been done on credibility and new media, but little of it focuses on users younger than college students. Digital Media, Youth, and Credibility fills this gap in the literature. Book Synopsis The Politics of Race in Canada by : Augie Fleras
Download or read book The Politics of Race in Canada written by Augie Fleras and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians like to think that they judge people on merit, not skin colour. But are we really colour-blind? Although Canada has an international reputation for welcoming cultural and ethnic diversity, race remains a profound influence in our society, affecting everything from self-perceptions to interpersonal relationships to interactions between the individual and the state. The Politics of Race in Canada deconstructs the myth of Canada's racelessness. Its 24 selections (among them two documents from the early twentieth century and several new essays, published here for the first time) explore the principles, practices, and polemics of race in this country from a broad range of perspectives, academic and otherwise. Designed specifically for courses in the sociology of race and ethnicity, this text will also enrich the study of race in history, anthropology, women's studies, and political science courses. New as well as previously published selections by specialists from many different disciplines offer students a multitude of perspectives on a complex topic. Concluding section focuses students' attention on resistance to traditional ways of thinking about race and ethnicity. Part introductions and study questions encourage critical thinking. Recommended websites and readings suggest new directions for research. Book jacket.
