Book Synopsis REGINE - Regularisations in Europe by : Martin Baldwin-Edwards
Download or read book REGINE - Regularisations in Europe written by Martin Baldwin-Edwards and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REGINE is a research project on regularisation practices in the European Union. The aim of the project is to provide a thorough mapping of practices relating to the regularisation of third country nationals illegally resident in EU Member States. Two additional non-EU countries - Switzerland and the US - will also be covered to gain insights in regularisation practices and the impact of regularisations elsewhere. In examining regularisation practices, the project also investigates the relationship of regularisation policies to the overall migration policy framework, including to protection issues and refugee policies. Moreover, the project examines the political position of different stakeholders towards regularisation policies on the national level. Finally, the project examines potential options for policies on regularisation on the European level, incorporating Member States as well as other stakeholders' views on possible instruments on the European level.

Book Synopsis Modes of Migration Regulation and Control in Europe by : Jeroen Doomernik
Download or read book Modes of Migration Regulation and Control in Europe written by Jeroen Doomernik and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Europe, immigration is a politically potent issue—especially when it comes to the treatment of asylum seekers and illegal labor immigrants. This volume draws the reader into the complex and contradictory world of migration regulation and control, covering the wide range of different policy approaches that aim to control the entry and residence of non-EU citizens. Revealing the common framework, tendencies, and policy convergences brought about less by design than a common concern about migration’s impact on the future of the EU, Modes of Migration Regulation and Control in Europe questions the effectiveness of additional efforts in terms of their fiscal and societal costs. “This important book emphasizes that European countries individually and collectively are converging in their efforts to manage migration.”—Philip Martin, University of California, Davis

Book Synopsis The European Union as an Area of Freedom, Security and Justice by : Maria Fletcher
Download or read book The European Union as an Area of Freedom, Security and Justice written by Maria Fletcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of essays on key topics and new perspectives on the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) and has a Foreword by the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Prof. Dr. Koen Lenaerts. Europe’s area of freedom, security and justice is of increasing importance in contemporary EU law and legislation. It is worthy of special research attention because of its high-stakes content (particularly from an individual and a state perspective) and because its development to date has tangentially thrown up some of the most important and contentious constitutional questions in EU law. As the AFSJ becomes more and more intertwined with ‘mainstream’ EU law, this edited collection provides a timely analysis of the merger between the two. Showcasing a selection of work from key thinkers in this field, the book is organised around the major AFSJ themes of crime, security, border control, civil law cooperation and important ‘meta’ issues of governance and constitutional law. It also analyses the major constitutional and governance challenges such as variable geometry, institutional dynamics, and interface with rights around data protection/secrecy/spying. In the concluding section of the book the editors consider the extent to which the different facets of the AFSJ can be construed in a coherent and systematic manner within the EU legal system, as well as identifying potential future research agendas. The European Union as an Area of Freedom, Security and Justice will be of great interest to students and scholars of European law and politics.

Book Synopsis Europe and Its Immigrants in the 21st Century by : Demetrios G. Papademetriou
Download or read book Europe and Its Immigrants in the 21st Century written by Demetrios G. Papademetriou and published by Migration Policy Institute and the Bertelsmann Foundation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European policymakers are attempting to develop immigration policies that meet economic needs and promote greater competitiveness and growth —without undermining the social models so valued by their electorates. To succeed, they must take into account aging populations, high and persistent levels of overall unemployment, even higher levels of unemployment among immigrants and ethnic minorities, and sector- and location-specific labor mismatches and shortfalls. Europe and Its Immigrants in the 21st Century examines many of the critical issues facing European economies and societies with regard to immigration. The authors juxtapose these issues with those facing the "traditional countries of immigration" (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States) and offers policy recommendations to address them. Among other topics, this book examines options for immigrant selection and managing all forms of migration better (including "irregular" migration), and offers recommendations for immigrant and minority integration policies at the EU, national, and local levels - where most integration work takes place. Contributors include Wolfgang Lutz (Vienna Institute for Demography), Klaus Zimmerman (Institute for the Study of Labor/DIW, Berlin), Louka Katseli (OECD), Grete Brochman (Institute for Social Research, University of Oslo), Heaven Crawley (AMRE Consulting), Demetrios G. Papademetriou (Migration Policy Institute), Sarah Spencer (COMPAS, University of Oxford), Brian Ray (University of Ottawa), Rinus Pennix (University of Amsterdam), Jorge Gaspar (University of Lisbon), Lucinda Fonseca (Centro de Estudos Geográficos), Kathleen Newland (Migration Policy Institute), Doris Meissner (Migration Policy Institute), T. The study is based on more than 150 interviews with corruption specialists and more than 120 statistical and survey indicators on corruption and organised crime. The study focuses on how organised and white collar criminals use corruption to target public institutions (politicians, police, judiciary, and customs), as well as how it is used for the operation of key criminal markets (cigarettes, drugs, prostitution, car-theft, and extortion-racketeering). The study also examines how private sector company employees are corrupted by organised criminals. Although the study does not map the specifics of how corruption is used in each EU Member State, six in-depth studies (on Bulgaria, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, and Spain) provide a more in-depth look in the situation in these countries.

This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The external border of the EU remains under permanent construction. Sabrina Ellebrecht engages with two of its primary building sites--the European Border Surveillance System (Eurosur) and the Refugee Boat. She analyzes how the function and quality of the EU's current political border is crafted, shaped, produced and eventually stabilized through these two mediators. Eurosur and the Refugee Boat catalyze and craft a level of Europeanization that has hitherto--and would otherwise have been--impossible. While Eurosur mobilizes the limits of border policing in various ways, the Refugee Boat functions as the vacillating European Other to legitimize both control and humanitarian interventions. The study shows the specific, if not constitutive, ambivalences of EU border policies, and explores the emergence of "viapolitics."
