Download or read book Mutual and Co-operative Approaches to Delivering Local Services written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Communities and Local Government Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report finds that efforts by the Cabinet Office to promote the development of employee owned cooperatives must be married more effectively to the work of DCLG to deliver localism reforms before mutual models of local service delivery can flourish. In its report, the CLG Committee concludes that a number of significant barriers must be removed. Advice - Government and local government itself should provide "off-the-shelf" models and guidance to reduce confusion and risks that deter local authorities currently from considering using mutual or co-operative models for service delivery. Leadership - co-ordination between the Government's Mutuals Support Programme, the DCLG and the Local Government Association must be improved to gather and disseminate evidence on the operation of mutuals and co-operatives in delivering local services. Financing - Government must do more to inform and educate financial institutions about lending to mutuals and co-operatives and it must examine tax support for mutuals and co-operatives. Accountability - all new organisations must remain accountable to the local Council (usually through a contract) and be transparent in their operations. Through commissioning and oversight processes authorities must prevent services from fragmenting and protect the operation and ownership of local public assets. Procurement - rules must be drafted to confer maximum flexibility in tendering for services so that mutuals and co-operatives can compete fairly with large companies and in-house providers.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Mutual, Co-Operative, and Co-Owned Business by : Jonathan Michie
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Mutual, Co-Operative, and Co-Owned Business written by Jonathan Michie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Mutuals and Co-Owned Business investigates all types of 'member owned' organizations, whether consumer co-operatives, agricultural and producer co-operatives, worker co-operatives, mutual building societies, friendly societies, credit unions, solidarity organizations, mutual insurance companies, or employee-owned companies. Such organizations can be owned by their consumers, the producers, or the employees - whether through single-stakeholder or multi-stakeholder ownership. This complex set of organizations is named differently across countries: from 'mutual' in the UK, to 'solidarity cooperatives' in Latin America. In some countries, such organizations are not even officially recognized and thus lack a specific denomination. For the sake of clarity, this Handbook will refer to member-owned organizations to encompass the variety of non-investor-owned organizations, and in the national case study chapters the terms used will be those most widely employed in that country. These alternative corporate forms have emerged in a variety of economic sectors in almost all advanced economies since the time of the industrial revolution and the development of capitalism, through the subsequent creation and dominance of the limited liability company. Until recently, these organizations were generally regarded as a rather marginal component of the economy. However, over the past few years, member-owned organizations have come to be seen in some countries, at least, as potentially attractive in light of their ability to tackle various economic and social concerns, and their relative resilience during the financial and economic crises of 2007-2013.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written by two Mexican analysts presents some new untapped regions of group analysis. The approach described by the authors is remarkable in terms of the disciplined and scientific attempt to apply psychoanalytic concepts to the work with groups.' - Psychologist-Psychoanalyst 'Combined, [the authors] have tremendous clinical experience and a most impressive knowledge of psychoanalysis, group analysis and the Latin American schools of group psychotherapy... The present book is a major contribution to the network of group-analytic knowledge at the beginning of the 21st century.' - from the Foreword by Malcolm Pines Group therapy and other dynamic approaches to the co-ordination of groups may focus either on the individual psychodynamics or on the group-as-a-whole. In Britain, group analysis developed as a group-centred approach of both therapeutic and non-therapeutic groups, from the foundational work of S.H. Foulkes. But there has been another, independent, Latin-American school of group analysis, which originated in Argentina as a result of the work and teachings of the Swiss born Argentine psychoanalyst Enrique Pichon-Rivière. This volume is a thorough introduction to operative groups. It starts by guiding the reader through the ideas of Pichon-Rivière, who conceived operative groups as a whole way of thinking and acting in groups, and then shows how the two schools of group analysis - the British and the Latin-American - coincide and inter-relate, shedding light on the theory behind both and including useful case material of various kinds of groups to illustrate such theory. This is the first book to be published in English that makes available the work of the Latin American school of group analysis. It will be a thought-provoking read for group analysts, psychotherapists and social scientists in all parts of the world, and for all therapists and analysts interested in developing the theoretical underpinning of their work.

Book Synopsis Co-operative Management of Local Fisheries by : Evelyn Pinkerton
Download or read book Co-operative Management of Local Fisheries written by Evelyn Pinkerton and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years concern over the mismanagement and depletion of our natural resources has grown. Innovative responses to this trend have been developed in the management of fisheries when groups or communities of fishermen and various levels of government in Canada and the United States have worked out agreements to share decision-making. This book is the first to consolidate information on the different routes by which these co-operative management arrangements have evolved. The authors include anthropologists, environmental planners, biologists, economists, fishery managers and tribal and governmental leaders. Their contributions examine the process of achieving co-management, the institutions created by co-management arrangements, and the benefits which result. Some of these benefits include more efficient and equitable management, less conflict between government and fishermen, and better co-operation between groups of fishermen. As the cost of centralized government rises and as resource-dependent regions demand greater control over development, co- operative management will become one of the most important means of regulating the use of certain natural resources. Co-operative Management of Local Fisheries looks at successes and failures of these arrangements for shared decision-making and offers guidelines for viable co-operative management.
