This information is used to manage for the Chinook salmon biological escapement goal for the Situk River as per the Situk-Ahrnklin and Lost River Chinook salmon Management Plan, along with achieving the Situk River sockeye salmon biological escapement goal. Inriver abundance for both Situk River Chinook and sockeye is obtained from another project with a fish weir, and escapement is calculated by subtracting the above-weir sport harvest estimate of this project from that weir count. Additionally, the Chinook salmon age component information of the harvest gathered here is required for yearly stock assessment models to predict the following years run and set preseason management regulations.

Book excerpt: A creel survey will be conducted to estimate sport angler effort, catch, and harvest of large (≥75 cm mid eye to tail fork length) early- and late-run Chinook salmon in the lower Kenai River between the Warren Ames Bridge (river mile [RM] 5.1) and Slikok Creek sanctuary area (RM 18.6). Creel survey estimates will be geographically stratified in relation to the RM 13.7 Kenai River Chinook salmon sonar to provide angler effort, catch, and harvest of large Chinook salmon. A standardized inriver netting project will be conducted in the Kenai River at RM 8.6 to index abundance and estimate the age, sex, and length (ASL) composition of large early- and late-run Chinook salmon. Inseason estimates of Chinook salmon catch and harvest, used in conjunction with sonar passage estimates, inseason catch rates, and the length of returning Chinook salmon from the inriver netting study are used by fisheries managers for inseason management decisions to achieve escapement goals. This plan covers the creel survey and inriver netting studies for the 2021–2023 seasons.

Book excerpt: In 2020-2024, Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) will be enumerated at 2 Anchor River sites from mid-May through early August to monitor escapement for the drainage. The south fork site, located at approximately river kilometer (RKM) 4.0, will be monitored by an Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar (ARIS) during high flow periods, and a resistance board weir fitted with underwater video will be used thereafter. The north fork site, located at about RKM 5.3, will be monitored by a resistance board weir with underwater video from the beginning of the Chinook salmon run in early May. Motion-detection technology will be used at each weir to record fish passage 24 hours per day. Weekly beach seine surveys will be used to capture Chinook salmon for age-sex-length (ASL) samples downstream of the confluence of the south and north forks. Chinook salmon data will be used to update estimates of the spawner-recruit relationship and harvest rate, and to provide inseason run information to managers. Coho salmon and steelhead will also be monitored in the fall of each year using the resistance board weir and video system on each fork. Coho salmon age, sex, and length will be collected via beach seining. Coho salmon escapement and harvest rate will be estimated along with an index of steelhead abundance and catch rate.

This study provides estimates of smolt and parr abundance, overwinter (freshwater) survival, mean lengths of juveniles, and harvest information of Chinook salmon originating from the Unuk River in Southeast Alaska. A separate project will be conducted on the Unuk River that employs aerial and foot survey peak counts to estimate large (≥ 660 mm mid eye to fork of tail length) adult Chinook salmon returning to the river in 2022 and 2023. The primary goals of this and the companion study are to estimate inriver run size, total run size, marine harvest and exploitation rates, harvest distribution, smolt and parr abundance, marine survival (smolt to adult) and overwinter survival (parr to smolt). The Alaska Department of Fish and Game uses this information to make local and regional management decisions and to evaluate the Unuk River Chinook salmon escapement goal, and the Pacific Salmon Commission uses the data for coastwide management and stock assessment through the Chinook Technical Committee.

Sampling of sockeye salmon for age, sex, and length data will be done each Friday, and the sample size each week will be based on the previous week’s fish passage. Sockeye and Chinook salmon spawning downstream of the Russian River weir to the confluence of the Russian River and the Kenai River will be assessed by a foot survey during the fourth week of August. Multiple foot surveys will also be conducted from mid-May to 10 June to assess spawning rainbow trout.

A modified Petersen 2-event mark–recapture project will be conducted using drift gillnets to mark large Chinook salmon in the first event, and collection of samples in the Canadian commercial fishery, Little Tahltan River video weir, and on the spawning grounds will serve as the second event. Additional project objectives are to a) estimate the annual spawning escapement of large Chinook salmon above the border, b) estimate the age, sex, and length composition of both the inriver run and spawning escapement, and c) estimate the proportion of large radiotagged Chinook salmon that cross the border. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) use these data to make terminal and regional management decisions, and the Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) uses the data for coastwide management and stock assessment through the Chinook Technical Committee (CTC 2021).
