Book excerpt: The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) has scheduled a test series of atomic weapons and devices at the Pacific Proving Ground (PPG) in the Spring of 1956. This test series, known as Operation REDWING, will consist of approximately sixteen detonations. The first shot is scheduled for 1 May 1956, and it is anticipated that the last detonation will occur not later than 15 August 1956. This plan covers the operational phase which will begin with the deployment of major elements of Joint Task Force SEVEN to the Pacific Proving Ground.

Book excerpt: Unforgettable congressional hearings in 1978 revealed that fallout from American nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s had overexposed hundreds of soldiers and other citizens to radiation. Faith in governmental integrity was shaken, and many people have assumed that such overexposure caused great damage. Yet important questions remain--the most controversial being: did the radiation overexposure in fact cause the cancers and birth defects for which it has been blamed? Elements of Controversy is the result of a decade of exhaustive research in AEC documentary records and the full clinical and epidemiological literature on radiation effects. More concerned with uncovering the historical story than with assigning blame, Barton Hacker concludes that every precaution was taken by the AEC to avoid harming test participants or bystanders. And, he points out, the biomedical literature suggests that these precautions worked. Yet top officials in Washington--for whom the success of nuclear weapons was of overriding importance--had asserted that testing involved no risks at all. Discrepancies between unverifiable government claims and the revelations that some actual risk was present explain the origins and angry persistence of the controversies, Hacker argues. The Department of Energy delayed publication of Hacker's study for five years, and while his controversial book is sure to draw objections from both sides of the radiation-hazard debates, it will provide a much-needed guide to understanding their polemics. The calculations have been performed for monoenergetic sources of 0.15, 0.30, 0.60, 1.2, and 2.5 Mev and for some experimentally observed fallout Spectra.

The main effort of the Navy task group (Task Group 7.3) was concentrated at Bikini Atoll in support of large yield shots. The broad mission of Task Group 7.3 was to provide the necessary naval support, including an evacuation capability, required by Joint Task Force Seven. Task Group 7.3 carried out the following assigned tasks: 1) conduct security and safety patrols (air and surface ship); 2) provide surface ship transportation between Eniwetok and Bikini and other atolls; 3) provide shipboard command, control and communications facilities for CJTF-7 and the task groups; 4) provide shipboard facilities to accommodate elements of the Joint Task Force while afloat, including pre-shot evacuations as directed by CJTF-7; and 5) provide support to scientific projects as requested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 200,000 U.S. military personnel participated in atmospheric nuclear weapons tests between 1945 and the 1963 Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Questions persist, such as whether that test participation is associated with the timing and causes of death among those individuals. This is the report of a mortality study of the approximately 70,000 soldiers, sailors, and airmen who participated in at least one of five selected U.S. nuclear weapons test series1 in the 1950s and nearly 65,000 comparable nonparticipants, the referents. The investigation described in this report, based on more than 5 million person-years of mortality follow-up, represents one of the largest cohort studies of military veterans ever conducted.

Book excerpt: In late June 2005, media sources recounted the tragic story of nineteen U.S. special operations personnel who died at the hands of insurgent / terrorist leader Ahmad Shah- and the lone survivor of Shah's ambush-deep in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan. The harrowing events of Operation Red Wings marked an important-yet widely misreported-chapter in the Global War on Terror, the full details of which the public burned to learn. In Victory Point, globally published author and photographer Ed Darack reveals the complete, as-yet untold, story of Operation Red Wings (often mis-referenced as "Operation Redwing"), and the follow-on mission, Operation Whalers. Together, these two U.S. Marine Corps operations (that in the case of Red Wings utilized Navy SEALs for its opening phase) unfurl not as a mission gone terribly wrong, but of a complex and difficult campaign that ultimately saw the demise of Ahmad Shan and his small army of barbarous fighters. Due to the valor, courage and commitment of the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Marine Regiment in the summer of 2005, Afghanistan was able to hold free elections that Fall. Here is the inspiring true account of heroism, duty, and brotherhood between Marines fighting the War on Terror.
