Book Synopsis Humanitarian Military Intervention by : Taylor B. Seybolt
Download or read book Humanitarian Military Intervention written by Taylor B. Seybolt and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military intervention in a conflict without a reasonable prospect of success is unjustifiable, especially when it is done in the name of humanity. Couched in the debate on the responsibility to protect civilians from violence and drawing on traditional 'just war' principles, the centralpremise of this book is that humanitarian military intervention can be justified as a policy option only if decision makers can be reasonably sure that intervention will do more good than harm. This book asks, 'Have past humanitarian military interventions been successful?' It defines success as saving lives and sets out a methodology for estimating the number of lives saved by a particular military intervention. Analysis of 17 military operations in six conflict areas that were thedefining cases of the 1990s-northern Iraq after the Gulf War, Somalia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, Kosovo and East Timor-shows that the majority were successful by this measure. In every conflict studied, however, some military interventions succeeded while others failed, raising the question, 'Why have some past interventions been more successful than others?' This book argues that the central factors determining whether a humanitarian intervention succeeds are theobjectives of the intervention and the military strategy employed by the intervening states. Four types of humanitarian military intervention are offered: helping to deliver emergency aid, protecting aid operations, saving the victims of violence and defeating the perpetrators of violence. Thefocus on strategy within these four types allows an exploration of the political and military dimensions of humanitarian intervention and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each of the four types.Humanitarian military intervention is controversial. Scepticism is always in order about the need to use military force because the consequences can be so dire. Yet it has become equally controversial not to intervene when a government subjects its citizens to massive violation of their basic humanrights. This book recognizes the limits of humanitarian intervention but does not shy away from suggesting how military force can save lives in extreme circumstances.

Book Synopsis War in the Persian Gulf by : Richard Winship Stewart
Download or read book War in the Persian Gulf written by Richard Winship Stewart and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2010 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, the Persian Gulf War captured the attention of the world as the first test of the U.S. Army since the Vietnam War and the first large-scale armor engagement since World War II. Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait and his subsequent ouster by the U.S.-led coalition are keys to understanding today's situation in the Middle East. The coalition partnerships cemented in that initial operation and in the regional peacekeeping operations that followed provided the basis for a growing series of multinational efforts that have characterized the post-Cold War environment. Moreover, the growing interoperability of U.S. air, sea, and land forces coupled with the extensive employment of more sophisticated weapons first showcased in Desert Storm have become the hallmark of American military operations and the standard that other nations strive to meet.

Download or read book Operation Provide Comfort written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1994, two U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopters and their crews assigned to Operation Provide Comfort were transporting U.S., British, French, and Turkish military officers; Kurdish representatives; and a U.S. political advisor in northern Iraq. The pilots of two U.S. F-15 fighters misidentified the Black Hawks as Iraqi helicopters and shot them down, killing all 26 persons aboard. As a result of questions raised by family members of those killed and others, Congress held a hearing in August 1995 on the causes of the incident, the resulting investigation by an Air Force Aircraft Accident Investigation Board, and the judicial actions under the Uniform Code of Military Justice that followed. This report discusses whether (1) the Board investigation of the shootdown met its objectives, (2) the subsequent Uniform Code of Military Justice investigations followed established guidelines, and (3) Defense Department or Air Force officials improperly or unlawfully influenced those investigations.

Book Synopsis Humanitarian Intervention Assisting the Iraqi Kurds in Operation Provide Comfort 1991 by : Gordon W. Rudd
Download or read book Humanitarian Intervention Assisting the Iraqi Kurds in Operation Provide Comfort 1991 written by Gordon W. Rudd and published by Military Bookshop. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With full color photographs and maps. "Humanitarian Intervention" is an operational study of the U.S.-led relief effort PROVIDE COMFORT, hastily organized in the spring of 1991 in response to the international outcry to stop the suffering and dying of the Iraqi Kurds who had been brutally suppressed in the aftermath of DESERT STORM and had fled across a mountainous border into Turkey. Gordon W. Rudd documents and describes this challenging operation involving joint and multinational forces. His study validates the capacity of military forces, well trained for war, not only to adapt quickly for humanitarian relief missions without specialized preparation but also to work alongside civilian relief agencies attempting to assist the refugees, requiring significant cooperation between the two groups. Today the potential of the new round of military-led peace operations to reduce turmoil and conflict-and, in effect, contribute to shaping the international environment-is significant, and soldiers now deployed in distant lands amidst unfamiliar people in the service of their nation will find Rudd's instructive perspective and record of the Army's experience invaluable.
Book Synopsis Khobar Towers: Tragedy and Response by : Perry D. Jamieson
Download or read book Khobar Towers: Tragedy and Response written by Perry D. Jamieson and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of the Khobar Towers bombing tells the story of the horrific attack and the magnificent response of airmen doing their duty under nearly impossible circumstances. None of them view their actions as heroic, yet the reader will marvel at their calm professionalism. All of them say it was just their job, but the reader will wonder how they could be so well trained to act almost instinctively to do the right thing at the right time. None of them would see their actions as selfless, yet countless numbers refused medical attention until the more seriously injured got treatment. Throughout this book, the themes of duty, commitment, and devotion to comrades resoundingly underscore the notion that America's brightest, bravest, and best wear her uniforms in service to the nation. This book is more than heroic actions, though, for there is also controversy. Were commanders responsible for not adequately protecting their people? What should one make of the several conflicting investigations following the attack? Dr. Jamieson has not shied away from these difficult questions, and others, but has discussed them and other controversial judgments in a straightforward and dispassionate way that will bring them into focus for everyone. It is clear from this book that there is a larger issue than just the response to the bombing. It is the issue of the example set by America's airmen. Future airmen who read this book will be stronger and will stand on the shoulders of those who suffered and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
