Book Synopsis Operation Millennium by : Eric Taylor
Download or read book Operation Millennium written by Eric Taylor and published by Isis. This book was released on 2006 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Operation Millennium' was the terrible culmination of months of pressure from 'Bomber' Harris to get this new and deadly strategy accepted. It was an extraordinary feat of organization involving 1048 bombers, over 6000 aircrew and 53 British airfields. To ensure success, 'maximum effect' was the order. The Royal Air Force waged a campaign against any airmen whom showed faltering commitment, ruthlessly trying them by court martial. The atmosphere of night bomber stations is vividly recalled - the comradeship, the pity and the fear. The raid on Cologne is remembered by the crews of Bomber Command and the unlucky citizens of Cologne who endured the night raids. Eric Taylor has interviewed Britons and Germans, whose eyewitness accounts testify to the horror and heroism on both sides.

Book Synopsis The Second World War by : Martin Gilbert
Download or read book The Second World War written by Martin Gilbert and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 1071 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mr. Gilbert brings the strongest possible credentials to his history of World War II, and the result is a magisterial work” (The New York Times). In the hands of master historian Martin Gilbert, the complex and compelling story of the Second World War comes to life. This narrative captures the perspectives of leading politicians and war commanders, journalists, civilians, and ordinary soldiers, offering gripping eyewitness accounts of heroism, defeat, suffering, and triumph. This is one of the first historical studies of World War II that describes the Holocaust as an integral part of the war. It also covers maneuvers, strategies, and leaders operating in European, Asian, and Pacific theatres. In addition, this book brings in survivor testimonies of occupation, survival behind enemy lines, and the experience of minority groups such as the Roma in Europe, to offer a comprehensive account of the war’s impact on individuals on both sides. This is a sweeping narrative of one of the most deadly wars in history, which took almost forty million lives, and irrevocably changed countless more. “Gilbert’s flowing narrative is spiced with anecdotal details culled from diaries, memoirs, and official documents. He is especially skillful at interweaving summaries of military strategy with vignettes of civilian suffering.” —Newsweek “[A] masterful account of history’s most destructive conflict.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Synopsis Trials and Tribulation by : Chris Sullivan
Download or read book Trials and Tribulation written by Chris Sullivan and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wartime airfields can be very atmospheric places. When you stand at Gransden Lodge at dusk, it’s very easy to imagine a huge Lancaster bomber taxying out onto a runway for takeoff...” Today, the peaceful countryside to the west of Cambridge is mainly given over to agriculture, but for several years in the mid-20th century, things were very different. Then, the area was dotted with airfields from which Allied aircraft flew to war – and one of these was Gransden Lodge. When the airfield first became operational, the units that were stationed there were involved in top-secret radar investigation and trials work, but within a year these units had moved away and the station became the base of the only Canadian squadron in the R.A.F.’s élite Pathfinder Force. It was later joined by another Pathfinder Force squadron, and together they flew many hazardous missions, in all weathers, against the Axis. After the war’s end, Gransden Lodge was briefly used by a unit that pioneered radar-assisted airborne mapping, and as a base for transport aircraft. It was subsequently the venue for some of the first post-war motor races in the U.K., and for many years before its decommissioning was under consideration as a Cold War base for American forces. In the early 1990s the wheel came full circle and flying began again, when Gransden Lodge became the home of one of Britain’s leading gliding clubs. Over the space of more than seventy years, Gransden Lodge has seen aviation in many forms, ranging from secret trials and heavy bomber operations to competitive gliding. World-renowned servicemen and scientists have passed through its gates, and many whose names are now almost forgotten lost their lives after taking off from its runways. Trials and Tribulation is the story of this historic airfield, and it will appeal to those interested in military and aviation history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wilt writes... well and offers many sound perceptions." -- Choice "... a stimulating book... a timely warning against overindulgence in hindsight in evaluating the great issues of the war... " -- Parameters "... a significant new study... a clearly written, excellent book... " -- Airpower Journal "... an impressive work of scholarship... " -- British Politics Group Newsletter "Wilt's comparative approach permits us fresh perspectives on both sides of the war. Moreover, Wilt has chosen to compare two of the major rival belligerents at the most stimulating and interesting level at which such comparison might be made, the level of the summit of decision making -- with the magnetic figures of Hitler and Churchill playing major roles in his narrative and analysis." -- Russell F. Weigley "This is a masterful treatment of a complex subject and a must read book for anyone writing about the Second World War." -- The Historian

Download or read book Bomber Barons written by Chaz Bowyer and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2001-03-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the Second World War over 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command had lost their lives, in this authoritative book, the Author selects a number of men, some well known like Leonard Cheshire, Hughie Edwards, but many less known such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, and details their careers, relating episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. Bomber Barons shows the development of Bomber Command from compartively unorganised, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, the greatest baron of them all.
Download or read book Wimpy written by Steve Bond and published by Grub Street Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date there has been a paucity of books on this remarkable aircraft. Among its claims to fame are the following: the only RAF bomber to serve in its original role from first day of war to last, and in every theater; the first type to bomb Germany; the first type to bomb Berlin; the first type to drop the 4,000lb ‘Cookie’ bomb; and so on. A serious study is well overdue, drawing not just on official documentation but relying greatly on personal accounts and anecdotes from the veterans who were there, both air and ground crew. And here it is. Through his diligent research over many years, author Steve Bond has produced an outstanding work. His coverage of operations will include, inter alia, the early bombing campaigns, the switch to main force activity, the use of OTU aircraft and crews on operations, the protection of Atlantic and Mediterranean convoys, service with the FAA and the French and the Wellington’s continued use as bomber and transport aircraft. A worthy tribute, then, replete with original photographs throughout.
