Book excerpt: Franz-Peter Weixler's pictures of the massacre of Kondomari are known worldwide, but hardly anyone knows the many shots made by the German war-corrospotent. This volume deals with the invasion of the German Wehrmacht, the paratroopers on the island of Crete and their consequences. For many, Operation Merkur was almost a magic word for the paratroopers' achievements. It was the beginning of a painful history for the Cretans. connected with the destruction of the capital Chania. The pictures of Franz-Peter Weixler also lead us to the struggles of the British and German forces, the long journey to Hora Sfakia, where the last troops tried to leave the island. But even the fateful images of the gruesome massacre of Kondomari remain unmentioned here. Rather, they should be a reminder.

Book excerpt: Unlike the few other books written on the catastrophic fall of Crete in May 1941, this book concentrates on the military actions between the first German paratroop landing on 20 May and the final defeat and evacuation on 30 May. As well as studying the strengths, tactics, leadership and weapons of both sides, the book contains numerous graphic personal anecdotes by participants, be they German, Allied or Cretan. While the battle was a decisive defeat for the Allies, the Germans made a disastrous start. How they recovered from this so spectacularly is well covered. This is a worthy addition to the Battleground series being both a fine study of the conflict and an invaluable guide. The Author has visited Crete on many occasions and knows the ground well.

Book excerpt: May 2011 marked the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. It was in this battle that the new Airborne Forces' weapon was deployed for the first time in history. It was a venture that war history had never seen before, especially since the Cretan defenders knew the plans of the Germans in detail from wartime signals intelligence (Ultra) and had prepared themselves accordingly. Starting from Clausewitz's famous statement that war is the continuation of politics by other means, Heinz A. Richter's study does not view the Battle of Crete in isolation as a purely military event, but as part of the then political and military confrontation between the British world and its allies with the Axis powers. Thus, as far as the prehistory is concerned, the presentation is also a piece of history of diplomacy. At the same time, the different strategic concepts of the two parties involved are analyzed, taking into account the partly divergent internal German plans of the army on the one hand and the navy and air force on the other. The operational planning of both sides are discussed in detail. Finally, the tactical implementation and parallel effects in the Middle East and London are observed in the description of the battle itself. The volume is the English edition of the study, which was published in German and Greek in 2011. In addition to revisions and amendments, it contains an extra chapter describing the events after 2011.

Book excerpt: Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in May 1941, was the first strategic use of airborne forces in history. The assault began on 20 May, with landings near the island's key airports, and reinforcements the next day allowed the German forces to capture one end of the runway at Maleme. By 24 May, the Germans were being reinforced by air on a huge scale and on 1 June Crete surrendered. This book describes how desperately close the battle had been and explains how German losses so shocked the Führer that he never again authorised a major airborne operation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1941 the German Luftwaffe conducted the first purely airborne invasion of an island in history. Although German airborne forces would seize the island of Crete their operational objective, the operation was accomplished at great risk of failure and at great cost in personnel and resources due to the lawed application of operational art. Operation Mercury was an operational objective of opportunity following unexpectedly successful operations in Greece and Yugoslavia. With only three weeks to plan and prepare prior to execution, improvisation and compromise would characterize the attack. although the operation ended in the seizure of Crete, the cost in lives and resources would prevent Hitler from ever again risking his airborne forces in a major airborne operation. This case study reviews the broad strategic setting surrounding the operation and provides an analysis contrasting German planning and preparation with execution. Through an examination of the operational factors of space, time, and force, an analysis of the operational functions of operational command and control, intelligence, and fires, and an examination of vertical envelopment as a form of operational maneuver, on can derive significant lessons learned applicable to today's forced entry operations.

Book excerpt: Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in 1941, was unprecedented in three respects; it is considered to be the first airborne operation in history; it was the first time the Allies made significant use of intelligence from the deciphered German Enigma codes; and it was the first time German troops encountered mass resistance from a civilian population. Beginning on 20 May, German forces landed near the island's airports, took over the runways, and with numerous reinforcements landing over the forthcoming days, Crete surrendered within a week. Yet it was not without cost. German losses were horrific, with casualties over a third of all men employed. Crete was the first of its kind and many learned from its mistakes as well as its successes, with even Hitler so shocked by the number of men lost that he never again authorized this level of airborne operation. The Conquest of Crete, 1941 describes the eleven days in combat in full detail, including accounts of Cretan civilians--armed with only what they could gather from their houses--overcoming the German troops all over the island. Supported by color artworks of the men involved and their machines, along with photographs and battle maps, this is a complete account of one of World War II's most devastating operations. These are the ‘Sky Men’. Any army’s mavericks. Trained to operate independently in testing conditions. Dropping into the middle of enemy territory, these tough British, American, German and Russian soldiers engage in gruelling combat the most dangerous conflict zones in the world. Robert Kershaw, an ex-Parachute Regiment officer, reveals the history of these airborne forces, and their important role during the most dramatic battles of the twentieth century. He finds out what makes them tick, what drives a ‘Sky Man’ to take these extraordinary risks, what marks these sky warriors out from ordinary soldiers? Based on exclusive interviews with soldiers from around the world, as well as letters and diaries, Sky Men is full of vivid personalities, and nail-biting action. It is the story of the army’s biggest risk-takers, The Paras.
