Book excerpt: Three friends descend upon an art auction in search of some excitement. Mike Mackenzie-retired software mogul, bachelor and fine art enthusiast-wants something that money can't buy. Fellow art-lover Allan Cruickshank is bored with his banking career and burdened by a painful divorce. And Robert Gissing, an art professor, is frustrated that so many paintings stay hidden in corporate boardrooms, safes and private apartments. After the auction-and a chance encounter with crime boss Chib Calloway-Robert and Allan suggest the "liberation" of several paintings from the National Gallery, hoping Mike will dissuade them. Instead, he hopes they are serious. As enterprising girlfriends, clever detectives, seductive auctioneers and a Hell's Angel named Hate enter the picture, Ian Rankin creates a highly-charged thriller, a faced-past story of second guesses and double crosses that keep changing the picture, right until the harrowing finish.

In this book he shares the wisdom he has gained, retelling women's stories about the pain and anger and challenges they face in the first few months of being widowed. But most important, Lieberman has made discoveries that expose many of the pernicious myths about widows, and discloses the surprising sources of help for women and the fact that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The vast majority of women, after a painful time, found themselves flourishing - living different but satisfying lives, and changing and growing in ways they never could have dreamed of. This is a book that offers comfort and consolation by understanding so much of what so many women go through and by revealing the truth about widows: that women of all ages have the ability to respond to tragedy, to deal effectively with challenges, and to realize new ways to live and be well."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Organizations are only as productive as the interactions that take place between individuals, teams and divisions. This book is a short, engaging guide for dramatically improving the quality of these interactions. The four 'keys' that Judith Katz and Frederick Miller provide offer a framework and a common language for creating an open, honest and supportive workplace, one where people aren't afraid to speak up and where everyone feels respected. The four keys are: - Lean into Discomfort: Be willing to move beyond your comfort zone, and help create an environment where others feel the same way. - Listen as an Ally: Try to find ways you can support fellow employee's ideas. - Share Your Intent and Intensity: Make it crystal clear how committed you feel to any idea you raise. - Share Street Corners: Your perspective - your corner - is only one point of view. Actively encourage people from other ""corners' to offer their perspectives.

In the beginning of his life, Prathyagrahi’s family was very poor but enthusiastic and intelligent Prathyagrahi always wanted to be rich. Suddenly he became quite rich in his young days itself and there was a rumor that Prathyagrahi took the help of some spirits to become rich like that. But Prathyagrahi never has agreed to that and his wife Savitri also could not know the truth however much hard she tried. Even she always suspected, Savitri did not convince and confirm in herself that Prathyagrahi took the help of some evil power to become rich like that, until she heard her granddaughter Ragini, possessed by the bad angel Upanya talking at bedridden Prathyagrahi that she would take revenge on him and his family as he took help from her and betrayed her and her gang. Feeling very much fear that Upanya, the bad angel, put her words into action, at the suggestion of his whole family, Prathyagrahi’s son Sadan invited his parapsychologist friend Anurag to his home to solve the problem of that evil power. Once came into the house of his friend Sadan, Anurag started trying in all the ways possible to know about that evil power and solve the problem. He suspected that some spirit was trying to contact the people in Prathyagrahi’s room and communicate something because of the strange experiences of nurses at Prathyagrahi and Prathyagrahi’s daughter Mandakini in that room. He made Yamuna, the night time nurse at Prathyagrahi to act as medium to that spirit and that spirit, who was Prathyagrahi himself, came into Yamuna and communicated with his family. Prathyagrahi’s sorcerer friend Viloma gave him the ability to separate himself from the body and communicate with his family members. Prathyagrahi at last revealed his secret through Yamuna that he took the help of Upanya the bad angel to become rich in his life promising to help it and its gang in return in their deeds but after coming to know about the bad nature of Upanya and her gang he got them spell-bounded to metal dolls, put them in a metal pot and buried deep under earth by his friend and sorcerer Viloma. But after eighty or so of years, the place where those bad angels were buried was excavated, that pot has been taken out from there and when the metal dolls were touched with impure hands they lost their power and those bad angels could become free. Viloma once again made those dolls became powerful and got them reached Prathyagrahi. As suggested by Prathyagrahi, Anurag made contact with Viloma, the sorcerer, to know how to get rid of those bad angels again. Viloma said to him, on a peculiar solar eclipse day, which comes on a Sunday, first week, first month in a year, luckily which was going to happen soon, those bad angels would be with very little power and on that day those bad angels could be easily invited into those metal dolls, spell-bounded and buried under earth after putting them in a special metal pot as he did on such a peculiar solar eclipse day eighty years or so back. But some conditions have to be met with to do that and Viloma elaborated them to Anurag. Those conditions were carefully met with by Anurag and Sadan’s family members and on the peculiar solar eclipse day, Viloma possessing Anurag invited those bad angels into those dolls, spell-bounded them and buried them deep under earth just as he did eighty years or so before. But before being buried like that, Upanya and her gang, so desperately tried to escape from that and used Dr.Mallikarjun who attended on Prathyagrahi and Dr.Sasichandan who is a junior doctor in Dr.Mallikarjun’s hospital. Samita, a nurse, also has been used by Upanya to spoil the plans of Anurag and Viloma. But however much hard they tried none of their plans worked and they had to meet with the tragic end!

Book excerpt: Family is complicated. Love isn’t. Acclaimed artist Elaine Gordon can’t believe her loving husband is gone. After a lifetime spent utterly devoted to her soul mate and their marriage, Elaine is now tetherless, faced with widowhood and all the decisions that come with it, not least of which is what to do with her rambling, now-empty family home. Anxious to console their mother in her time of grief, Elaine’s four grown children urge her to put everything on hold and spend some healing time with them. But visiting each unique and complicated child opens Elaine’s eyes to the fact that the children she raised have become adults she hardly knows: Sarah, who abandoned Western life for an orthodox enclave in Jerusalem; Lisa, Sarah’s accomplished twin and polar opposite, who will do anything for a child of her own; Peter, trapped in a hollow marriage in California; and Denis, the youngest, who just wants Elaine to accept his gay lifestyle. As Elaine tries to bridge the physical and emotional miles, her eyes are opened to the startling truths of her own family, and what she must do to come to terms with her kids’ lives—and a future that’s completely, wonderfully…hers.

As a teenager, Kristin Berry had heard all the horror stories surrounding foster care and adoption—abuse, neglect, rejection, anger, and misunderstandings. But instead of closing her heart, God opened it wide. This is Kristin’s honest, unvarnished story of some of her experiences as a foster parent of twenty-three children over the course of nine years. What she learned is that living in a foster home is like living with a revolving door. You never know who will arrive or who you will have to say goodbye to. Leaving the door open means there will be heartache and pain, but also adventure and unexpected joy. Kristin and her husband, Mike, have been through it all in their unique parenting journey. If you have ever wondered what it’s really like to be a foster parent, this book will help you gain a true understanding of the everyday trials and triumphs these moms and dads face. It will also inspire you to consider opening your door…and to leave it wide open.

Book excerpt: Open Wide the Doors to Christ, is a powerful tool for both teachers and students of the Catholic faith. As an excellent resource for RCIA and Adult Faith Formation, this insightful book discusses the basics of the Catholic faith -- and how we can live it fully. As the "meat and potatoes" of Catholicism, it is an introduction to the Church's teachings on the Creed, the sacraments, the moral life, prayer and much more -- with particular focus upon those who are seeking to become Catholic. Presented in a way that adults from all walks of life can understand, the book challenges readers to dig deeper and to continue to grow in their understanding of Christ and the Catholic Church.
