The anthology includes a wide range of Albuquerque-based poets and poems that are inspired—directly, associatively, obliquely—by Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a place and as a community. Anthologies commonly celebrate a multitude of voices. Because this one is place-based, we hope you will feel drawn into a circle that deepens your sense of place and people, of contexts and cultures, whether you know Albuquerque or not. Because the Albuquerque poetry community is characterized by its support for individual writers and by a strong impulse toward creative collaboration, Open-Hearted Horizon features poems in multiple voices. In addition to poems by individual poets, this collection also features collaborative works, including those by the EKCO collective and one that features a line from every poem in the anthology. Book Synopsis Open Heart, Open Mind by : Tsoknyi Rinpoche
Download or read book Open Heart, Open Mind written by Tsoknyi Rinpoche and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Open Heart, Open Mind, Tsoknyi Rinpoche—one of the most beloved of the contemporary generation of Tibetan Buddhist meditation masters—explains that a life free of fear, pain, insecurity, and doubt is not only possible, it’s our birthright. We long for peace, for the ability to love and be loved openly and freely, and for the confidence and clarity to meet the various challenges we face in our daily lives. Within each of us resides a spark of unparalleled brilliance, an unlimited capacity for warmth, openness, and courage, which Rinpoche identifies as “essence love.” Timeless and imperishable, essence love is often layered over by patterns of behavior and belief that urge us to seek happiness in conditions or situations that never quite live up to their promise. Drawing on rarely discussed teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, Rinpoche describes how such patterns evolve and offers a series of meditation exercises to help us unravel them and, in the process, reawaken an energy and exuberance that can not only bring lasting fulfillment to our lives but ultimately serve to enliven and inspire the entire world, as well. With great humor, intelligence, and candor, Tsoknyi Rinpoche also details his own struggles to reconnect with essence love. Identified at an early age as the incarnation of a renowned Tibetan master and subjected to a rigorous monastic training, he ultimately renounced his vows, married, and is now the father of two daughters. As he recounts his own efforts to strike a balance between the promptings of his heart and an obligation to preserve and protect the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, Rinpoche provides a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern life, and encourages each of us to rediscover the openness, fearlessness, and love that is the essence of our own life.

Book Synopsis The Trail of the Open Heart by : Rebecca Rees
Download or read book The Trail of the Open Heart written by Rebecca Rees and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are stories of All-Kinds-of-Love: cat love, family love, romantic love, erotic love, friendship and community love, love of work, love of home, love of nature, love of art, love of justice, love of spirit, broken love, mistaken love, and eternal love. From finding and losing and finding a girlhood Jesus to fighting racial injustice in the old South to thirty years of radical loving in flowery San Francisco to adventuring to live on the edge of the wild high-desert mountains, this is one feminist Everywoman’s journey on the Trail of the Open Heart. The dedication from the story “Mistakes of the Open Heart” gives a taste of the book: I dedicate this story to my loving mistakes on the trail of the open heart, the-ones-who-got-away. To Michael, my first friend in San Francisco, who was in love when I was free, and free when I was in love, and lovingly married when I was free again. To Charles, my Rainmaker. To Tim, the first lover who made me feel beloved. To Doug, my kindred spirit who held hands with me in the convent. To Steve, who dumped me on the Winter Solstice, but still wrote to tell me he loved his Hanukah present of seven stories. To David, a sweet guy who just wanted to be my friend and sing with me on the trail. And to Paula, best friend and adventure buddy of my youth, who said that one of us should have been a man and knew that neither was willing to volunteer. From you lost neverwhere or nevermore lovers, and from the unnamed others (including the bad guys), I have learned hard lessons. You taught me humility and respect for the needs of others. You taught me compassion in situations in which I was the rejector instead of the rejectee. You taught me to allow every relationship to assume its natural form, and that just because people love each other does not mean that they are meant to be together. You helped me learn that the true source of all my love is me. You taught me that part of being an attractive woman may be attracting experiences that I didn’t expect. You taught me to take responsibility for assessing when a person may be impulsive and unreliable, and to take responsibility for acting on that knowledge. You taught me that emotional fluency is not necessarily emotional responsibility. You taught me that men who declare that they have been my lover in many lifetimes probably jerked me around in all those other lifetimes too. You taught me to balance the romantic with the rational and not to mistake neediness for passion. You taught me to count the cost of a relationship and decide if I am willing to pay that price—all of it—and still not get what I want. I learned that most people love as well as they know how at the time, given human imperfection in giving love and human imperfection in receiving it. I learned that sometimes love is deeper without sex, and sometimes friendship is more loving than love. I learned that love is everywhere, here and now, and is not restricted in form. I learned that life is ultimately a great Mystery, and that what we have to give and teach each other may be beyond our immediate comprehension. You, my mistakes of the open heart, led me to experience the tremendous peace and clarity that comes from giving up, absolutely, on an unworkable situation. You helped me to learn that I can survive the death of an illusory self-in-relationship and be reborn to new possibilities, an ever–widening horizon of life. You have helped me to become a woman of wisdom, a woman who has learned to make good love and good friends when I can, and learned to make the scraps into enlightenment soup.
Book Synopsis Horizon, Sea, Sound by : Andrea A. Davis
Download or read book Horizon, Sea, Sound written by Andrea A. Davis and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Horizon, Sea, Sound: Caribbean and African Women’s Cultural Critiques of Nation, Andrea Davis imagines new reciprocal relationships beyond the competitive forms of belonging suggested by the nation-state. The book employs the tropes of horizon, sea, and sound as a critique of nation-state discourses and formations, including multicultural citizenship, racial capitalism, settler colonialism, and the hierarchical nuclear family. Drawing on Tina Campt’s discussion of Black feminist futurity, Davis offers the concept future now, which is both central to Black freedom and a joint social justice project that rejects existing structures of white supremacy. Calling for new affiliations of community among Black, Indigenous, and other racialized women, and offering new reflections on the relationship between the Caribbean and Canada, she articulates a diaspora poetics that privileges our shared humanity. In advancing these claims, Davis turns to the expressive cultures (novels, poetry, theater, and music) of Caribbean and African women artists in Canada, including work by Dionne Brand, M. NourbeSe Philip, Esi Edugyan, Ramabai Espinet, Nalo Hopkinson, Amai Kuda, and Djanet Sears. Davis considers the ways in which the diasporic characters these artists create redraw the boundaries of their horizons, invoke the fluid histories of the Caribbean Sea to overcome the brutalization of plantation histories, use sound to enter and reenter archives, and shapeshift to survive in the face of conquest. The book will interest readers of literary and cultural studies, critical race theories, and Black diasporic studies.

Book excerpt: Life is fleeting. Love is a gift. In this coming of age novel set in the 1970s, Gene Hull is whitewashing the trunks of Arizona citrus trees when he spots a beautiful girl and falls instantly in love. The girl is vulnerable and shy. Though Gene breaks through her reserve, a date at a wave park turns into a near disaster, and Gene must call on the one person he can always rely on—his doctor father. Although the girl survives and Gene wins her over, what will happen when they leave for college? Is she truly “the one,” or will distance drive them apart? When a freak accident blows a hole in Gene’s freshman year, his grades tank, and he bobbles the ball with the love of his life. She’s gone forever. Not only that, but he’ll never get into med school on grades alone. Hoping to improve his chances of admission, he spends the summer trailing a famous heart surgeon. But can Gene, determined to live up to his father’s legacy, turn his summer in the “Heart Room”—an operating theater of chilling cold, bone saws, and macabre humor—into an experience that would make his father proud? Will he ever love again? If you like novels where family life is complicated, and parents’ expectations trickle down into their children’s lives, then you’ll love Gregory D. Williams’ roman à clef about life, love, and finding one’s own true path.
