Book excerpt: When award-winning television news anchor Cheryl Wills discovers that her great-great-great grandfather, Sandy Wills, was a runaway slave who joined the historic fight for freedom in the American Civil War, she embarks on a gut-wrenching search to learn more. Cheryl¿s journey leads her to a courageous ancestor who demonstrated the same courage that she knew in her beloved father, an intrepid New York City firefighter, who died when she was thirteen. Her father never knew his family¿s notable legacy. Told with deep love and brow-raising honesty, "Die Free" stretches from Haywood County, Tennessee, in the 1860s to New York City in the twentieth century. Cheryl shares the unvarnished truth about the Wills¿ family roots, ever entwined in passion, music, and faith. Cheryl also exhumes the spirit of her great-great- great grandmother Emma Wills, an illiterate lionhearted widow, who was discriminated against as she fought to obtain her husband¿s Civil War pension and unwittingly dictated her historic life, from slavery to freedom, in sworn depositions to a lawyer. The century-old pension papers become the Holy Grail for the newscaster who nails a scoop that has forever changed her life and that of future generations. A lesson in the pruning of one¿s imagination, "Die Free" takes readers on a haunting yet exhilarating ride through the side door of American history.

Book excerpt: Refusing to give up their ancestral land and be driven into the newly established reservation, several Nez Perce bands led by Chief Joseph, White Bird, and Looking Glass embarked on a fighting retreat covering four states: Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, with an attempt to reach safety in Canada. Along the way the native warriors outwitted the U.S. Cavalry again and again, but eventually surrendered some 40 miles from the Canadian border where Chief Joseph made his famous "I will fight no more forever" speech. About 750 men, women, children, and elderly set out on the march; over 100 died in battles and extreme hardship. Based on historical facts mostly the story was told through the eyes of a fictitious nine-year-old white girl, Opal, who befriends the Nez Perce and goes through the war with them. the oppression of the Native Americans was one of the darkest pages in the U.S. history, yet the spirit of these proud people could never be destroyed even in the face of death and exile and material impoverishment. Also the spirit of reconciliation prevailed as the peacemaker Chief Joseph eloquently summed up: Whenever the white man treats the Indians as they treat each other, then we shall have no more wars. We shall be all alike - brothers of one father and one mother, with one sky above us and one country around us, and one government for us all. Then the Great Spirit Chief who rules above will smile upon this land, and send rain to wash out the bloody spots made by brothers' hands upon the face of the earth. for this time Indian race is waiting and praying. I hope that no more groans of wounded men and women will ever go to the ear of the Great Spirit Chief above, and that all people may be one people.

Discontent is brewing in Happy as Brother Bob questions his beliefs as pastor of a church. Jen, his choir director, flounders in her unhappy marriage while caring for her mentally ill sister, Cheyenne, and cowboy James struggles between what is right and finally finding true love. When an elder Hispanic member of their community—Joaquin—learns his granddaughter, Angelica, has fallen into the hands of traffickers, this unlikely group of townsfolk unite and embark on an epic journey to save her. Angelica is being held by coyotes—the frightening human kind—across the river from the West Texas town of Presidio on the Mexican border. It will be a miracle if she survives long enough for her grandfather and his Happy crew to rescue her. With poignancy and humor, Land of Dust and Hope deftlyillustrates the resilience of the human spirit in its forthright depiction of the experiences of people who are desperately trying to cross the US border and the importance of challenging the traditional notions of love, faith, and sin.

Starting in the mid-1980s, a talented group of comics creators changed the American comic industry forever by introducing adult sensibilities and aesthetics into popular genres such as superhero comics and the newspaper strip. Frank Millers Batman The Dark Knight Returns 1986 and Alan Moore and Dave Gibbonss Watchmen 1987 in particular revolutionized the genre. During this same period, underground and alternative genres began to garner critical acclaim and media attention, as best represented by Art Spiegelmans Maus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journalist chronicles his Texas family’s century-long saga of faith and fortune seeking in this acclaimed memoir: “a Texas version of Hillbilly Elegy” (Bryan Burrough, author of Barbarians at the Gate). In 1892, Bryan Mealer’s great-grandfather leaves Georgia to seek his fortune in the open country of Texas. But the family soon loses their farm to drought just as the region experiences one of the biggest oil booms in American history. They eventually settle in the small town of Big Spring, where fast oil fortunes are being made. For the next two generations, the Mealers labor in cotton fields and on drilling rigs, weathering booms and busts. During the Great Depression, they ward off despair by embracing Pentecostalism. But for young Bobby Mealer, the author’s father, the search for spiritual peace leads him to a rebellious move away from Big Spring. Then in 1981, Bobby’s old friend Grady Cunningham entices him back home with the promise of millions. While drilling wells for Grady’s oil company, Bobby and his wife embrace the honky-tonk high life. But beneath the Rolexes and private jets is a reality as dark as the crude itself. As Bobby soon discovers, his return to Big Spring is a backslider’s journey into a spiritual wilderness, and one that could cost him his life. A masterwork of memoir and narrative history, The Kings of Big Spring is an indelible portrait of fortune and ruin as big as Texas itself. And in telling the story of four generations of his family, Mealer also tells the story of America came to be.

Book excerpt: The urban landscape is changing and, as a result, urban ministries are at a crossroads. If the Church is to be an effective agent of compassion and justice, Robert Lupton notes, we must change our mission strategies. In this compelling book, Lupton asks the tough questions about service providing and community building to help ministries enhance their effectiveness. What are the dilemmas that caring people encounter to faithfully carry out the teachings of Scripture and become personally involved with "the least of these?" What are some possible alternatives to the ways we have traditionally attempted to care for the poor? How do people, programs and neighborhoods move towards reciprocal, interdependent relationships? To effect these types of changes will require new skill sets and resources, but the possibilities for good are great.
