Book Synopsis Ontogeny of Transmitters and Peptides in the CNS by : Anders Björklund
Download or read book Ontogeny of Transmitters and Peptides in the CNS written by Anders Björklund and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1992 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. This tenth volume of The Handbook of Chemical Neuroanatomy focuses on the ontogeny of transmitters, transmitter-related enzymes and neuropeptides in the CNS. The coverage is broad and gives a comprehensive and systematic survey of the principal ontogenic features of the neurotransmitter and neuromodulator systems in the mammalian CNS.The volume represents a continuation of earlier volumes of the handbook series, in which the distribution of classical transmitters and peptides has been described in the adult brain. It is also to a certain extent complementary to Volume 6 on the peripheral nervous system, where developmental and ontogenic aspects in the periphery are discussed. This volume, with an unusually wide international authorship, will be an asset to the series and to neuroscience libraries.

Book Synopsis Peptide Receptors, Part II by : A. Bjorklund
Download or read book Peptide Receptors, Part II written by A. Bjorklund and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-12-13 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peptide Receptors Part I was published in 2000 (as volume 16 of the Handbook of Chemical Neuroanatomy series). This volume summarized current knowledge on the discrete anatomical distribution of ten families of neuropeptide receptors expressed in the mammalian CNS. Part II is its natural complement with chapters covering six additional families of neuropeptide receptors for ligands ranging from well known peptides such as the opioids and neurotensin to recently isolated ones like the orexins. As in the case of Part I, this volume integrates photomontages and maps of quantitative receptor autoradiography, in situ hybridization histochemistry and immunocytochemistry. Data derived from transgenic and knock-out animals are also summarized, helping to decipher the possible physiological and Pathophysiological role(s) of a given peptide family. Some chapters also review current knowledge on the profile of internalization of the neuropeptide-receptor complex, an area of intense research activities that should help to better understand mechanisms involved in desensitization and tachyphylaxis.

Book Synopsis The Newborn Brain by : Hugo Lagercrantz
Download or read book The Newborn Brain written by Hugo Lagercrantz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-07 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of the brain and the emergence of the mind constitute some of the most important concerns of contemporary biology. Disturbances during fetal life may have profound implications for a child's future neurological and psychological development, which can in turn impact society. The new edition of this highly respected work presents a comprehensive review of the basic mechanisms of brain development and the pathophysiology of disorders of the infant brain, written by a team of distinguished neuroscientists, neonatologists, and neuropediatricians. The book follows the main milestones of brain development, from formation of the neural tube and wiring of the neurons in the brain. Neurotrophic factors, neurotransmitters, glial cell biology, cerebral circulation development of sensory functions are all described in detail. Furthermore, there are more philosophical chapters on the evolution of the brain and the emergence of consciousness. Clinical considerations are highlighted where relevant.

Book Synopsis The Mesencephalic Trigeminal Nucleus in the Cat by : N.E. Lazarov
Download or read book The Mesencephalic Trigeminal Nucleus in the Cat written by N.E. Lazarov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes our current understanding of the ultrastructure and synaptic organization of the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN) in the cat as well as the neurochemistry of its neuronal population. Particular emphasis is given to the survey of synaptic connections and the possible physiological involvement of MTN inputs in the transmission of proprioceptive information. Using immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization histochemistry we have identified distinct neuronal, partly chemically coded MTN subpopulations - large glutamatergic and smaller GABAergic neurons. We also show that MTN receive catecholaminergic and peptidergic innervation. The levels of transmitter substances vary according to the environmental conditions thus implying the neurochemical plasticity of MTN neurons.

Book Synopsis Neuroplastic changes in addiction by : Ildikó Rácz
Download or read book Neuroplastic changes in addiction written by Ildikó Rácz and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder, which comprises impulsive and compulsive elements. Chronic drug consumption leads to long-term neuroadaptive changes in the brain thus result in an addictive state. However, development of addiction is a complex interaction between genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors. The resulting cellular and molecular changes mediate the transition from controlled drug use to the loss of control over drug-taking and drug-seeking. The human association studies helped us to identify some important genetic factors responsible for the susceptibility to addiction. However, social, environmental circumstances highly influence the development of addiction. Using animal models helps us to examine the underlying neuronal/molecular processes under standardised conditions. The aim of this Research Topic is to summarize our knowledge about the neuroplastic changes, which contribute to the maintenance of drug taking. Data presented in this Research Topic should also provide evidences how acute and long-term neuronal changes during withdrawal result in relapse. How different neuromodulators like endocannabinoids and endogenous opioids contribute to molecular mechanisms that mediate the transition from the controlled, occasional drug consumption to the uncontrolled, escalating drug use and seeking.
