The incidence of each trematode was calculated for each habitat during each season. Intermediate hosts of the trematodes were also collected. It was found that the habitat in which gray snappers reside is more important than their size, sex, or the season of the year in determining the nature of their trematode populations. This may be the result of the intermediate host distribution being regulated by the habitat. Seasonal changes in trematode populations result from fish movements, such as spawning migrations or movements in response to cold water. The differences between the trematode populations of large and small snappers probably are a function of their residing in different habitats and eating different organisms. The sex of gray snappers has no discernable [i.e. discernible] effect on their trematode populations. Metadena obscura sp. n. (Cryptogonimidae) was found in the pyloric caeca and intestine of Lutjanus griseus (Linnaeus). Nine species of trematodes were found in the intestine and pyloric caeca of Lutjanus griseus near Lower Matecumbe Key: Metadena globosa, M. adglobosa, M. obscura, Paracryptogonimus neoamericanus, Hamacreadium mutabile, H. gulella, Helicometrina nimia, Helicometra execta, and Stephanostomum casum.

Book excerpt: The last major synthesis of our knowledge of fish migration and the underlying transport and guidance phenomena, both physical and biological, was "Fish Migration" published 16 years ago by F.R. Harden Jones (1968). That synthesis was based largely upon what could be gleaned by classical fishery-biology techni.ques, such as tagging and recapture studies, commercial fishing statistics, and netting and trapping studies. Despite the fact that Harden Jones also provided, with a good deal of thought and speculation, a theoretical basis for studying the various aspects of fish migration and migratory orientation, progress in this field has been, with a few excepti.ons, piecemeal and more disjointed than might have been expected. Thus we welcomed the approach from the NATO Marine Sciences Programme Panel and the encouragement from F.R. Harden Jones to develop a proprosal for, and ultimately to organize, a NATO Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on mechanisms of fish migration. Substantial progress had been made with descriptive, analytical and predictive approaches to fish migration since the appearance of "Fish ~ligration." Both because of the progress and the often conflicting results of research, we felt that the time was again right and the effort justified to synthesize and to critically assess our knowledge. Our ultimate aim was to identify the gains and shortcomings and to develop testable hypotheses for the next decade or two.

At that time, we were engaged in writing a joint paper on potential structuring mechanisms in helminth communities; we disagreed on a number of issues. We felt the reason for such debate was because the discipline was in a great state of flux, with many new concepts and approaches being introduced with increasing frequency. After consider able discussion about the need, scope and the inevitable limitations of such a symposium, we decided that the time was ripe to bring other ecologists, engaged in similar research, face-to-face. There were many individuals from whom to choose; we selected those who were actively publishing on helminth communities or those who had expertise in areas which we felt were particularly appropriate. We compiled a list of potential participants, contacted them and received unanimous support to organize such a symposium. Our intent was to cover several broad areas, fully recognizing that breadth negates depth (at least with a publisher's limitation on the number of pages). We felt it important to consider patterns amongst different kinds of hosts because this is where we had disagreed among ourselves.
