Book excerpt: A gripping adventure story based on real historic quests for the priceless buried treasures of ancient Egypt. How do you lose an army of fifty thousand without a trace? Napoleon's invasion of Egypt turned into a treasure hunt with ancient sites plundered to enhance France's museums and palaces. When, in 1799, Napoleon learned his position in Egypt was untenable due to the British blockade, Bonaparte ordered that the best gold and jewel encrusted loot be buried to be retrieved at a later date. In 1805, when the political situation allowed, Bonaparte organised a large caravan to set out in secrecy with armed escort into the Great Sand Sea, south of the Siwa Oasis to recover the treasure and transport it back to France. The entire caravan marched into oblivion, swallowed by a fierce sandstorm and lost without trace in a sea of burning sand. Since then, others such as the memorable team of Carter and Lord Carnarvon have attempted to uncover the hidden secrets beneath the sands of Egypt and adventurers and amateurs have sniffed around like bloodhounds to uncover leads and pay locals for information. Negotiations were carried out with intrigue and clandestine deals to thwart rivals. It is against this factual historic background that the two main characters of this story embark on a journey from Prague to Cairo and through the Sahara to the remote oasis of Siwa to fulfill a promise, to solve a mystery and avenge their uncle's murder.

Book excerpt: It is no exaggeration to say that the Mormons (the Latter-day Saints) are a fascinating people. Since 1830, they have been a part of the great mosaic of America. Persecuted by mobs, driven from place to place, their incredible courage in the face of unrelenting hostility has wielded them into a formidable presence, especially in the State of Utah. Founded in New York State by the charismatic Joseph Smith Jr., he said he was personally commissioned by God to restore pure Christianity to the world. The Book of Mormon, this "most perfect book" was his initial written, binding revelation to his church. Joseph Smith was a controversial figure in his day-accused of being a fraud, a racist, a womanizer, a disrupter of good morals, and a dictator. One thing he did do well was to gather people into his church, make them believe in themselves, and strengthen them into being a formidable force for Mormonism. Smith led them through armed conflict against hostile neighbors, even against government militias. Gun battles and extreme violence were commonplace. Eventually, Joseph Smith was captured and assassinated, all this by age forty. Nobody was convicted of his murder. Smith is perhaps the most understudied, under-estimated, and misunderstood character in American history. "He was no ordinary man." When his successor Brigham Young led the Latter-day Saints to a place of sanctuary (today's Salt Lake City, Utah), it was one of the most epic, unifying journeys in American history. In the past, some of their unusual practices were total obedience to the leadership, blood atonement, and especially polygamy. Some of these were discarded (1890), so today most Mormons are good neighbors. However, there are Mormon "outlaws" who still practice such unsavory things, hoping to resume them all. One goal of the early saints was to conquer Missouri, next the entire country, then the world. Today, the Mormon Church is one of the wealthiest and most powerful organizations on the planet. Its influence and missionary outreach is worldwide. As possibly the fastest-growing faith in the world, maybe someday they will succeed. Then what will be next?

Book excerpt: In the book, God and His Coexistent Relations to the Universe, the author is rejecting the universe that Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein have accepted for a long period. To replace this old universe, an improved universe appeared from the thoughts of Confucius, Anaxagoras, Plato, and Jesus, who taught the death of our sun in Ch. 24 of Matthew. Unfortunately, this teaching by Jesus was quieted for fifteen centuries by Irenaeus, until Copernicus stood up and said that earth is not the center of the universe. So, an improved universe was becoming very interesting to many scientists.. This improved universe of Copernicus would expand when Kepler found that our sun has a system of eight precise planets. Slowly, the improved universe would become very clear when Leibniz found the immortal human souls and when Galileo found the bodies are made by these immortal souls. In 1766, Ben Franklin went to Germany in order to learn the immortal souls of Leibniz. In the next ten years, Americans would separate America from England, which still accepts the old universe. After this separation, more discoveries would come to the USA from German and Chinese thoughts. For example, Riemann would tell the world that the relationships of bodies in the universe can be determined only by our senses and measurements. With Riemanns statement, the author concluded that God is always active. The author also found that God and the bodies in the universe come together with co-existent concepts. With these advances, the author rejects the old universe and says that the people of many nations will form a new religion under an active God.

Book excerpt: The winner of numerous literary awards including the Anne Frank Prize and Goethe Prize, Cees Nooteboom, novelist, poet and journalist, "is a careful prose stylist of a notably philosophical bent." (J.M. Coetzee, The New York Review of Books) In Roads to Berlin, Nooteboom's reportage, "from a 1963 Khrushchev rally in East Berlin to the tearing down of the Palast der Republik, brilliantly captures the intensity of the capital and its â??associated layers of memory,'" The Economist said. The book maps the changing landscape of post-World-War-II Germany, from the period before the fall of the Berlin Wall to the present. Written and updated over the course of several decades, an eyewitness account of the pivotal events of 1989 gives way to a perceptive appreciation of its difficult passage to reunification. Nooteboom's writings on politics, people, architecture, and culture are as digressive as they are eloquent; his innate curiosity takes him through the landscapes of Heine and Goethe, steeped in Romanticism and mythology, and to Germany's baroque cities. With an outsider's objectivity he has crafted an intimate portrait of the country to its present day. From the Hardcover edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the Bible so violent and bloody? How can God's behavior in the Old Testament be reconciled with that of Jesus in the New? Do you find yourself trying to rationalize God's violent demeanor in the Bible to unbelievers or even to yourself? Does it seem disconcerting that God tells us not to kill others but He then takes part in some of the bloodiest wars and vindictive genocides in history? The answer to all such questions is found in Jesus on the cross. By focusing your eyes on Jesus Christ and Him crucified, you come to understand that God was never angry at human sinners, and that no blood sacrifice was ever needed to purchase God's love, forgiveness, grace, and mercy. In Nothing but the Blood of Jesus, J. D. Myers shows how the death of Jesus on the cross reveals the truth about the five concepts of sin, law, sacrifice, scapegoating, and bloodshed. After carefully defining each, this book shows how these definitions provide clarity on numerous biblical texts. If you have ever wanted to see God in the light of Jesus, seek no further. J. D. Myers masterfully reveals the truth of who God is, as well as the missing pieces you have been searching for in order to truly understand what is written in the Bible. You will also gain insight into the true plight of humanity and what Jesus came to rescue and deliver us from. Read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no time for the people of the world to waste to decide to change their ways and their ways of living. The world is in a crisis that it has not been in before. Actually the world has been in countless crises in the past, before disaster, calamity or catastrophe struck the people of the earth. We are not talking of crises of natural disasters, calamities or catastrophes that have hit the earth, we are talking about man made, man engineered and man designed disasters, calamities and catastrophes that have hit the world from time to time. History is full of them and apart from those natural disasters caused by God or the Devil themselves; the rest were caused by man themselves. Now this revelation is not about the natural but about the spiritual. Power mad dictators, rulers and potentates the world over are normally the cause of these disasters, calamities and catastrophes and nature has little to do with them although they did affect nature, in some way or another. Small and great Wars were started by whosoever caused them without any due regard of mens lives, and the resultant horrors, hardships and horrendous pain, lived on in the hearts and lives of the people that survived. No one can add these things up nor can they count the cost in human suffering, misery and pain, nor the cost of mens souls lost all for the sake of mans vanity. "The current synopsis is catchy and intriguing. This synopsis is well written and it will entice readers into picking this book up and reading it." - Cynthia Sherman Writers Literary & Publishing Services, Critique Division

Using any means necessary to get to the top with her talent, Kathleen Ingersoll reached the far edge of possibility as a classical pianist. With the higher music establishment in the background, her story is neither about music nor about Paris. It is about a woman and the cost of extreme ambition, about love and other dangers, and about time and the river. Events on streets and in neighborhoods that were never in Paris are in this book the same way that Poes murders happened in the Rue Morgue. Persons who existed in the pastfor example, Josephine Bakerare images in a distorted mirror. The world in this book and the one we call real happen inches apart. Whether Kathleen Ingersolls bargains with an imaginary or true devil could actually have happened somewhere, sometime, the author leaves to his many coauthors, the readers. They necessarily will see the story as different from what the author saw in telling it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most incisive indictment against Christianity resides in the notion of a God who created a world in which there is untold suffering and death. Is this the best God could do? In response, most Christians will mutter something about free will or the necessity of evil to bring about God’s plan for humanity. Theologians often reply by challenging the very legitimacy of the question; God only requires that we persevere. Biblical scholars, who might otherwise be expected to offer a scriptural perspective, nervously denounce any suggestion that the presence of evil may have had something to do with a primordial couple and a fruit tree. Is it any wonder that most people believe that evil must surely be an intractable component of human existence introduced, perhaps, by the very God Jews and Christians worship? This book is a response to the problem of evil that unconditionally affirms the goodness and power of God. Based on a new assessment of the Genesis creation story, one of the greatest texts ever to have emerged in human history, the author contends that God never intended for humanity to experience suffering and death.
