From New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry comes a novel that puts a bold new spin on the supernatural thriller. Rain Thomas is a mess. Seven years an addict and three difficult years clean. Racked by guilt for the baby she gave up for adoption when she was sixteen. Still grieving for the boy’s father who died in Iraq. Alone, discarded by her family, with only the damaged members of her narcotics anonymous meetings as friends. Them, and the voices in her head. One morning, on the way to a much-needed job interview, she borrows reading glasses to review her resume. There is a small crack in one lens and through that damaged slice of glass she sees a young boy go running down the aisle of the subway train. Is he screaming with laughter or just screaming? When she tries to find the boy, he’s gone and no one has seen him. The day spins out of control. Rain loses whole chunks of time. She has no idea where her days went. The voices she hears are telling her horrible things. And even stranger things are happening. Unsure whether she is going insane, Rain sets out to find answers to long buried questions about an earlier life she has avoided for years—in what may be the most dangerous collision of all, that between reality and nightmare. Download or read book Coaltrain written by Richard Pederson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an environmental fiction novel, dealing with 2 brothers from West Virginia, who high-jack and then blow up a giant train loaded with coal, as a protest against the coal companies strip-mining all the land surrounding their mountain family farm. In preparation for the operation, one brother hitch-hikes West, to enlist the aid of an old family friend, and meets and falls in love with a tall beautiful girl in Denver. The other brother heads East, and rescues a young swimmer from a deadly stinging jellyfish, and meets a wise yoga master, from whom he learns much. This is an action packed story, with an exciting plot, and yet deals with many topics of today's society, especially the negative aspects of our current energy policies of burning so much coal and fossil fuels. The environmentally aware reader should find it entertaining and exciting, especially the ending, where the disastrous effects of strip-mining collide full force with a mountain family's fierce determination to save the land they love.

Book excerpt: Can a young, shipwrecked space pilot, trapped on a backward planet where the only aircraft are biplanes, stop the rebirth of an evil interstellar empire? Pilot First Class Melodan Castille of the Revolutionary Space Force has just graduated top of her class from the RSF Academy. She’s a good pilot and knows it: what she doesn’t know is why she’s out in the boondocks when her classmates are gearing up for the final assault on the Preceptorate’s headquarters on Earth that will end the century-old Revolution. By comparison, her assignment to scout the mysterious planet Avalon means nothing. Nothing, that is, until her scoutcraft is shot out of space as she enters the system; nothing, until her lifeslip crashes in the middle of a local uprising; nothing, until she finds out that the “final” attack on Earth her classmates are making is really only a prelude to the long, bloody struggle that will come if the evil Preceptorate succeeds in its plans to make Avalon its last, secret stronghold. Though mistrusted by the local freedom fighters who should be her allies and hunted by the planetary governor, Melodan must find a way to get a message to the Revolutionary Space Force—before it’s too late, for her, for Avalon, and for the galaxy’s hope for freedom and peace.

Book Synopsis Stepping Stones to a Higher Vision by : Joseph P. Schultz

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepping Stones to a Higher Vision examines the development of religious consciousness from religion to spirituality to mysticism. This developmental path imaginatively described as “stepping stones” in the title of the book and as “elevators of religion” in chapter one, has its rewards but also its dangers and pitfalls. Intended for the non-specialist lay person interested in religion, as well as the scholar, the book focuses on Jewish tradition and its sources (Hebrew Bible, Talmud-Midrash, and Kabbalah), but in a broad cross-cultural interdisciplinary context. Ritual, prayer, including meditation and contemplation, ethics and morality, religious leadership, and the afterlife are analyzed in the context of sociology, science, and the history of religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: i’ve got peter gabriel’s “I Don’t Remember” going thru my head this morning . . . and most of yesturday, and the day before. it seems important to some part of my soul which sits with signs and applause everytime it goes thru my head. they like the drive of the artist’s expression of frustration and anxiety which comes thru in a manic crazyness. the song is an example of something that flashes us spiritually . . . maybe unlike a man in a trenchcoat . . . wearing shorts with a tee-shirt . . . flashing us briefly (ow!) as we walk by. the words “believe in god” embelished on his shirt echo on the canvas of the imagination. it doesn’t matter if we turn around, run after him and chide him in his actions. it doesn’t matter if by doing this it puts him in the same alagory as a pervert . . . and by action, god as well. ultimately tho, the tired, worn out god, quietly sitting in a courner, desperatly trying to believe in himself . . . probably wondering how valid this whole soap opera is, and whether or not spiritual flashers help or hurt his cause. now i got one of the songs from “the last temptation of christ” going thru my head . . . soundtrack ala peter gabriel as well. another spiritual flasher . . . who, jesus or peter gabriel? both an arrow pointing at a path to be walked . . . or a voice to listen to . . . or a feeling to behold. the hardest part is opening your heart up to the option. the option to be open. ( . . . maybe it’s god that’s trying to get into a working relationship with us and it’s us that flinch and put it back up on a pedistal.) . . . why pursue it then? the path. you might accidently get superpowers or something . . . start levitating, healing the sick, curing the blind. become an issue . . . to be delt with by turkeys that can’t fly. walk around, wonder when thanksgiving is. wonder if you look like a turkey. if you are a turkey walking around with turkeys talking turkey talk about how great it is to be a turkey . . . waiting for other turkeys to come over and watch turkey friends on turkey tv. and each turkey has the same turkey right to talk turkey to any turkey it wants in a frantic pace with a frantic face . . . then it’s a good turkey day to be a turkey. gobble it up the daily rut. question your life avoid the knife. be not a turkey entwined behind the line of commonality to turkey HQ. after awhile, you fall into the style. you are accepted, people talk to you. and you find flaws in the turkey tune.

Book Synopsis Transfiguring Luther by : Vitor Westhelle
Download or read book Transfiguring Luther written by Vitor Westhelle and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luther's theology and practice have inspired and continue to inspire so many across confessional and even religious alignments worldwide, or else excite those for whom he displays a coveted, untamed audacity in living out convictions; it is the fabric, the texture that makes Luther a figura with the capability of being transfigured. Luther's theology--his view of language and understanding of creation, incarnation, the cross; his affirmation of freedom from ecclesial, economic, and/or political encroachments; his eschatology, and so forth--is seen in a new light in societies in which modernization does not necessarily mean secularization and the spirit is not set in dual opposition to things material. The dispute as to whether Luther is a late medieval theologian or a beacon of modernity is rendered largely superfluous when the Reformer is read and interpreted in contexts that do not share the peculiar cultural and political history of Europe, its orthodoxies, its pietisms, its enlightenments, and its secularisms. Transfiguring Luther lifts up and presents the significance of the Reformer--his figure as it is transfigured into diverse contexts, absorbing new contents instead of the traditional bastions that are remarkably in tune with the spirit of the Reformation, thus rekindling it.
