Book excerpt: Psychological Sense of Community (PSOC) consists of four components: membership, influence, integration and fulfillment of needs, and emotional connection (McMillan & Chavis, 1986) and is used to study relationships between individuals in a community (Sarason, 1974). Several psychosocial benefits have been found to be associated with a high level of PSOC, such as enhanced perceptions of social relationships and greater well-being. The Internet, especially social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook and Twitter, has provided a new way for people to come together, potentially implying that community is shifting to a different platform. Previous research (Ganadharbatla, 2009; Ridings & Gefen, 2004) on SNS use has suggested benefits to users, such as social support, which buffers against stress and increased well-being (c.f., Cohen & wills, 1985). The present study compares experience of PSOC, social support, and well-being online versus in person in a diverse sample of Community College students (N=213). It then investigates the relationship between Facebook and Twitter use and PSOC, social support and well-being. There was no difference in reported PSOC or social support between Facebook users and SNS non-users, nor were there significant differences in overall well-being. However, Facebook users reported a greater PSOC and social support than Twitter users. These results suggest that SNS users experience a PSOC and social support in their in person lives equally as participants who do not participate in online social networking, suggesting the community is equally formed on these SNS.

A normatively stabilized structure is at issue, a "social gathering," but this is a shifting entity, necessarily evanescent, created by arrivals and killed by departures. The major section of the book is the essay "Where the Action Is," drawing on Goffman's last major ethnographic project observation of Nevada casinos. Tom Burns says of Goffman's work "The eleven books form a singularly compact body of writing. All his published work was devoted to topics and themes which were closely connected, and the methodology, angles of approach and of course style of writing remained characteristically his own throughout. Interaction Ritual in particular is an interesting account of daily social interaction viewed with a new perspective for the logic of our behavior in such ordinary circumstances as entering a crowded elevator or bus." In his new introduction, Joel Best considers Goffman's work in toto and places Interaction Ritual in that total context as one of Goffman's pivotal works: "His subject matter was unique. Book excerpt: The 13th International Conference on Human–Computer Interaction, HCI Inter- tional 2009, was held in San Diego, California, USA, July 19–24, 2009, jointly with the Symposium on Human Interface (Japan) 2009, the 8th International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics, the 5th International Conference on Universal Access in Human–Computer Interaction, the Third International Conf- ence on Virtual and Mixed Reality, the Third International Conference on Internati- alization, Design and Global Development, the Third International Conference on Online Communities and Social Computing, the 5th International Conference on Augmented Cognition, the Second International Conference on Digital Human Mod- ing, and the First International Conference on Human Centered Design. A total of 4,348 individuals from academia, research institutes, industry and gove- mental agencies from 73 countries submitted contributions, and 1,397 papers that were judged to be of high scientific quality were included in the program. These papers - dress the latest research and development efforts and highlight the human aspects of the design and use of computing systems. The papers accepted for presentation thoroughly cover the entire field of human–computer interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of application areas.
