Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the author’s spiritual transformation resulting from his encounter with new languages and cultures. This encounter allowed the author to transcend the boundaries imposed on him by the circumstances of his birth (born and raised behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War). The fresh outlook on the world that emerged for him is the kind of radical shift that lies at the heart of all intense spiritual experiences, regardless of faith affiliation. His journey moves beyond the self to explore the domain of otherness in language, literature, and the arts. Ultimately, the author arrives at a spiritual place in which disparate, culture-bound realms blend—an expanse of acceptance, harmony, and peace.

Book Synopsis Syllable and Word Languages by : Javier Caro Reina
Download or read book Syllable and Word Languages written by Javier Caro Reina and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume concerned with the phonological typology of syllable and word languages, based on the model of a complex, multi-layered and hierarchically structured phonological system. The main typological claim is that the phonetic and phonological make-up of a language depends on the relevance of the prosodic categories. In previous research, the syllable and the phonological word have already proved to be typologically important. The contributions in this volume discuss theoretical questions and address issues such as the variable structure of the phonological word, the interplay between phonetics and phonology as well as the effect of a language’s phonological make-up on its morphology or lexicon. The volume provides detailed synchronic and diachronic analyses of (Non-)Indo-European languages which will serve as a basis for further typological research.

This book was released on 2023-01-15 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the theoretical and analytical challenges that languages with complex morphologies pose for the theory and typology of word-level prosodic phenomena. The morphological complexity and phonological length that are characteristic of words in these languages make them a particularly fruitful ground for investigating the effects of both phonological and morphological factors in the assignment of prominence. The first three chapters in the volume explore general theoretical issues pertaining to word prominence in synthetic languages, including the issue of 'wordhood' and the empirical, theoretical, and methodological issues with delineating word-level prominence and the higher-level prosodic phenomena in these languages. These are followed by a series of case studies on stress, accent, and tone in a geographically and genetically diverse set of languages with highly synthetic morphologies including languages of the Americas, Europe and Asia, and Australia. The volume adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, combining phonetic, phonological, and morphosyntactic insights. It will be of interest not only to phonologists and morphologists, but to all those interested in the typological and theoretical issues relating to polysynthetic languages.
